How do you know the previous owner of your refurbished laptop didn't install a rootkit on it?
Uh I asked the Apple Store guy for the best one and he gave me thisDon't know what you're talking bout

>>109632937Hey CIA man/person of color, I hope you enjoy reading my work
>>109632937You don't, and the same applies for industry made hardwareHow can you tell there wasn't a supply chain attack at some point
>>109632937how do you know attackers don't have direct control over your wireless headphones and are able to inflict hearing damage at the flip of a switch
how do you know you aren't just a brain in a jar and reality is carefully delivered shocks to it?
Wouldn't it be comically easy to put some sort of keylogger device inside a desirable keyboard and put it on ebay? I always wonder whether that's something people actually do, probably because I bought my desirable keyboard on ebay. It's probably too esoteric of a strategy to be worthwhile to anyone who wants to steal credit card numbers or passwords or whatever else. Tricking old people is a lot more straightforward, and they have all the money anyway.

>>109632937>How do you know the previous owner of your refurbished laptop didn't install a rootkit on it?Because the black light I shined on it showed me what they really used it for.
>buying refurbished KeK
As easy as just flashing a bios image and reinstall from scratch.
>>109632937I didn't buy it from Chong Penn
>>109636476You can't get great refurbished laptops nowadays. If all you need is a shit posting machine for watching videos and 4chan then you will find so many businesses selling off old Ryzen laptops which still function perfectly.Only reason to buy brand new would be if you're a gaymer that needs a dGPU.
>>109636602*You can I mean, not can't.Refurbished laptops aren't that old crusty ThinkPad stigma anymore.
>>109636602>Only reason to buy brand new would be if you're a gaymer that needs a dGPUOr maybe the reason is that you're not a poorfag
>>109632937I do a fresh install of Debian Linux every time i get a new computer
>>109636673You don't flash a new/update bios?
>>109636684Usually not
>>109636617It's more than just cost though. Computers have been adequate for basic shit posting and video watching for ages now. There is nothing a brand new laptop that costs thousands could do better than a laptop from a few years ago that also cost thousands.Buying refurbished means you're making a commitment to reduce the piles of irreparable e-waste that exist. If something that's already in circulation fulfils your needs perfectly then you don't necessarily need a new piece of hardware just because you can afford it. That sort of mentality is wasteful and the downfall of humanity and society as a whole.Think of it like buying a classic car. Plenty of gearheads have the money to throw at something brand new but still appreciate older cars.
>>109632937You dont, but you can erase EEPROM (Electronically ERASABLE PROM) and reflash the manufacturer supplied UEFI/BIOS You might rightfully argue that it's backdoored as well, so you got to find an open firmware board (many of which are also open hardware) like Odroid... but that's not a laptop to be fair.
>>109632937how do you know the manufacturer(or the long line of distributors) of your new laptop didn't?
>>109637477And if you really want to be paranoid about locking down your existing hardware... you could mod your motherboard to make the EEPROM read only (just ground the write control pin) after you recompiled your firmware. No chance for persistent backdoors
>>109632937I changed the fucking hard driveSomething you can't even comprehend to do now since it requires LOADSAMONEY
>>109632937It's very unlikely but flash your bios if you're worried about it. Maybe you have a reason to be worried. Maybe you got your laptop from a brown person from India or Pakistan.
>>109632937
>>109637542You are retarded anon. The Laptop motherboard contains flash storages for BMC and BIOS/UEFI and probably also for audio and networks related peripherals. A lot of room to hide malware.
recently bought a laptop that came with ubuntu preinstalled asking myself the same thing OP
>hurr just flash biosthe backdoor is at the CPU level retards
>>109637690Of course it can be, but reflashing the motherboard chips is better than nothing. Cutting of ROM sections from a modern CPU dies (and then not breaking it) would be quite the complex and sophisticated optical lab operation
