This, I use this simple gray background on every monitor, nice and neutral, isn't distracting or bright when other monitors are empty, but not completely black.

Same goes for the Debian Thinkpad and the Debian work PC.

Personally, I don't care about wallpaper because I never see it. I keep my applications full screen, and put each application on a different workspace, so I don't even see my wallpaper anyway. Also, I prefer Gnome because the panel is minimal and the dock only shows up when I hit the super key.
