did I crimp it wrong? I spent like 1 hour on each side, plus 3 hours to get the cable through the wall and this little shit is not detecting any signal
I only have 4 connectors left, so 2 more chances for each side but I don't even know what I did wrong
>>
>>109637168
no one has to prove anything to someone who can't afford a cable tester for wire mapping
>>
>>109636793
photo isn't that good, you don't happen to have a macro lens on a real camera?

OTOH mostly just test the pins for continuity and then indeed just match colors to a T568B diagram? It's not like you need us to check the order of 8 colors of wire.
>>
>>109637191
cable tester is easy too but you literally also just can use a multimeter on continuity test, all you really wanna know most is if the signal arrives at each matching cable and for just 8 tests that's not that much of a bother

Come on, now.

Yeah wrong order.

Should be pic related, not have green on the outside.
Although I think it should still work as long as you did both connectors the same way.
>>
>>109636793
Just cut the cable and do it again
Should be faster the third time
>>
>>109637212
>multimeter
OP said he already ran the cable through the wall so the multimeter would need a wireless endpoint for the other room, or an extremely long probe to test continuity
>>
>>109637197
>>109637191
I have no voltimeter nor cable tester with me so I'm just plugging it in the modem and the computer
even if I get one (I'd have to go outside and I would like to solve this now) I still would have no idea what I did wrong

>>109637222
nigga I have manly strong fingers
plus it is difficult to get all cables in the exact tiny hole
I know you are good at putting thin cylinders in holes but not me

>>109637306
the cable is long enough to reach the other room through the door though

but still not sure how testing wire individually would answer anything, I would have to just try again anyway
>>
>>109637249
actually now you mention it it looks like the orange is swapped with the striped green

shouldn't it at least detect the connection? the light in the modem socket didn't light up and my computer didn't detect anything
>>
>>109637306
run extra cable around the outside or just connect two pins on the other side (you'll check two cables at the same time once you know any two are good obviously you can spot if any other is not)

>>109637353
in some cases ethtool --cable-test[-tdr] also works but it needs hardware support that isn't nearly always a given.

well, if you can't find it out today the option will probably be to get a $10 cheapo cable tester.

he wires aren't connected with bluetooth, I checked the pic and the directions match, though yes, they indeed are crooked as shit and that metal crimple hides how the wires go into the plastic port

yeah I know but the colors aren't supposed to be visible at the left side, if they are you messed up. the one with the small arrow i don't know if there is a cable there and below are assumed to be white?

>>
>>109637615
Yeah but they are supposed to be hidden, you can clearly see the colors between OPs fingers.
>>
>>109637624
maybe a frayed cable somewhere?
also, stop being a nigger and let the sleeve cover them
are you manually putting them in one by one or are you putting them together at once like you should be doing?
>>
>>109637679
could be, but the cable seems intact

I'm putting them all at once, one by one would be impossible

>let the sleeve cover them
this is difficult enough as it is
>>
>>109637720
>this is difficult enough as it is
it ain't, mr parkinson hands
>I'm putting them all at once, one by one would be impossible
then cut the cables a bit shorter once you have them ordered properly
>>
>>109637720
I hate RJ too but if you relax and cut the cable to the proper length it will help hold the wires in place, you need to comb them for a while, trim any length difference and try inserting them a bunch of times until you're sure they're al lin properly
>>
>>109636793
I literally hate everything about this shit cable and connector it is unreal, the plastic clip breaks off like crazy all the time.

Slightly unrelated, I crimped a cat6 cable (around 12 metres long) but I can only negotiate 100 mbps, what gives?
The tester passes ok, 1 to 8 light up one after another, my router has a 2.5 gig port and 1gbps ports, my laptop a realtek card with 1 gig port, all the cat5e cable negotiate 1 gig as they are supposed to.
>>
>>109636793
>1 hour on each side
You'll get better with practice. Could always use a pass through connector to make it easier.
Also, you want to crimp onto the sheathing, you stripped the cable back to far.
>>109637249
This. T-568B is the standard.
>>109638914
Is link negotiation on your laptop set to 1gbps?
>>
>>109639323
(cont.)
Let me clarify:
Strip the sheathing back so you have a lot of wire. Then it's easier to use your fingers to untwist the pairs and straighten out the wires, then cut the wires down to size, put them in the connector, and check that they're in the proper slots, and in the proper order, and that when you crimp, you're crimping onto the sheathing, not the wires. Crimp and you're good to go.
Took me forever at first, but with practice you WILL get better.
>>
get a fucking keystone and patch cable you neanderthal, you might actually have a chance of making that work
>>
>>109639437
>use your fingers to untwist the pairs
Take the empty jacket and push it down between the pair and it'll unravel it sans the carpel tunnel
>>
>>109639437
>Took me forever at first
how?
shit's simple, first time I did that I was like 9 and it took me like 15 minutes to put the first EJ45 cap on since I was scared of being too brutal with the tools, but then dad did it with a lot more force to show me that it requires force and not to fear and told me to be more determined so the next time I did it took only like a couple of minutes or so

To be fair, crimping ethernet cables can be tricky and requires a lot of dexterity in your fingers. It took me about an hour to crimp my first ethernet cable (that was both ends, but still).

>>109637212
Multimeter on continuity setting (or just using an ohmmeter) is probably the way to do it. I've never had to do that myself though. I just put each of the wires in, crimp it, plug it into my PC and hey look at that, works first time. But if there was an issue then yeah, multimeter on continuity setting would be the way to troubleshoot any issue with any cable.

Just gotta be careful that the cable doesn't already have any current flowing through it when you do a continuity test (more relevant with electrical cables than data cables). If there is current flowing the cable, it'lll probably blow the fuse in your multimeter/ohmmeter (or destroy your meter outright).
Always do a voltage test first if you're not sure, and only proceed with a resistance/continuity test if there's no detectable voltage (also make sure to "proof" your voltmeter too, to ensure your voltmeter is functioning correctly. And test for both AC and DC voltage, just to be 1 billion percent sure you're not going to destroy your multimeter).
>>
>>109637377
if they're the same on both sides then it should work, but might not work at full speed as the wires are in twisted pairs for a reason
>>
>>109637249
Holy shit what a cursed color coding. I would 100pct fuck that up.
I've never done these, just pulled precrimped the very few times ive done it for my residence.
>>
>>109637624
those conductors look a little high, are you crimping them down completely?
>>
>>109639768
they were originally used for analog telephones
>>
>>109638914
>Slightly unrelated, I crimped a cat6 cable (around 12 metres long) but I can only negotiate 100 mbps, what gives?
Wires are in the wrong order, which does in fact matter.
>>
>>109639786
8 wires for a 4 line phone, right?
I think i still have an old spool of 4 wire residential around.
>>
>>109636793
um sir why are you posting tech support questions on the AI tranny cartoon board?
>>
>>109639800
not residential telephones, those are rj11, commercial systems. it was later shared with ethernet (10/100 use four wires).
this is also why we have an A and B colour coding, A is for phone system compatibility, B works better for dedicated ethernet lines
>>
>>109639799
that or there's a broken wire, 100Mbps works with four wires
>>
>>109639799
>>109639911
oh he posted a pic, lol wtf is that order? did he take "it'll work if they're the same" to mean there won't be a difference? good luck getting reliable gigabit even with t568a, much less a random order
>>
>>109639911
No, he tested the wires with a cable tester, and also we can see the wire order in the picture.
>>
>>109639943
>good luck getting reliable gigabit even with t568a
t568a works precisely just as well as t568b.
>>
>>109637624
Looks fine, but I see you're hiding your terrible crimp. Check your ports on your network device. Needs to be untagged and whatever PVID if it's managed. If it isn't, get a cheap fucking cable tester since you fucked up a wire pulling it.
>>109638914
wrong order kek. /g/ will create its own OS from scratch but fail to understand VLANs. It's fuckin wild.
>>
>>109639949
not in my experience
>>
>>109639967
Then your experience is misleading you. Be careful not to give it undue credence.
>>
>>109636793
if i were you i'd buy the connectors that have the pair aligners separate from the actual connector, also you gave to crimp with the cable casing a bit inside the connector, otherwise the pairs can get damaged
