So when are we going to be able to game on an eGPU on Linux? This shit has been broken for years.
linux users can have a treat when they reach 10% desktop market share
>>109638170Thunderbolt is still a lot slower than native PCIe so what gives ?A waste.
>>109638318So? It should still be a working feature else why should people who rely on it move on from shitdows? I use a business laptop with no dgpu so being able to link up an egpu to game on it would be nice to have on Linux.
why do you want to game on linux? Can't you do that in windows?t. linuxfag
My oculink egpu works perfectly on linux, and has for years
>>109638523Because I don't want to use shitdows. >>109638561Great! Now make it work on Thunderbolt.
>>109638170That looks so good, I unironically would love to switch to an ARM laptop and have an eGPU dock with monitors hooked up. WOW
>>109638596>Because I don't want to use shitdows.just use windows for your vidya and gnu/linux for everything else
>>109638607I use Gentoo and dualbooting shitdows will fuck up Gentoo when it updates.
>>109638605Until ARM makes a unified bootloader I will avoid it like the plague.
>>109638618Make a vm with gpu passthrough.
>>109638629>VMYou can't be fucking serious
>>109638634just don't play vidya. ez fix, that's what I do. Or play emulated retro slop
>>109638649Or whip the kdefags into shape to fix something that should've worked years ago, retard.
>>109638170you unironically don't need thisjust get a real computer instead of paying for a 50% premium on an already expensive product just for it to be slower than pcie
>>109638705Say that again when prices aren't raped and gaped by datacenters.
>>109638634Yes i am, with kvm you can get one 98% performance of native.
>>109638717>racism>>109638720I don't believe you but I'll look into it
>>109638714eGPUs have always been more expensive than the same GPU without a cable attached to it and often still more than the entire rest of the build
>>109638170I don't get the point of eGPU.Even meme like ITX build sounds more reasonable than this.
>>109638746I got the gigashit aorus 5060ti 16GB egpu for about $680. Considering enclosures go for $300+ alone I think I got a good deal for it.
>>109638756It's for people with handhelds, mini PC's, or laptops without dgpu's.
>>109638596>ThunderboltNot anon, but thunderbolt is only useful for battery devices, because you get battery charging + you can hotplug the thunderbolt cable + extra usb 2.0 ports. The problem is that if you want the display to be on the mobile device, you lose half your bandwidth (you get better performance if you plug a monitor to your GPU). And a 4x gen 4.0 pcie connection is equal to a thunderbolt 5 / usb4v2 port (by the way, I can't find any laptops with a thunderbolt 5/usb4v2 port, i'm sure they exist, probably with an nvidia GPU, but I looked at XPS and none of the newest laptops have it).If you cope with a thunderbolt 4/usb4v1 connector, you are getting half the bandwidth of a gen 4 occulink/pcie 4x slot. And pcie gen 5 is basically impossible to have a long connector for, risers for gen5 are very short and expensive, basically no egpu adapters (that are affordable). So just buy a desktop PC if you want a desktop GPU, or get an APU (like a pantherlake or AI max or macbook pro/max) if you care about getting a high fps on a battery.
>>109638796Yes, your first paragraph describes my situation to a T. I have a laptop with TB4 but that's all I need for the types of games that I play; JRPGs. I have it hooked up to my external monitor via the eGPU and what ends up happening is whenever I leave it plugged in and login through SDDM everything freezes. If I try to hotplug it after I login and start a program/game that will use the eGPU the system again freezes. My cursor always drags across the screen. I did some research and it has something to do with KDE rendering with the igpu and copying it to the egpu which is causing this issue. I read in some dev blog that they plan the implement some sort of fix by plasma 6.8 in Oct and that jewvidia is working on their own implementation for their proprieshit driver.
>>109638744You should look "gpu passthrough kvm qemu" those are the keywords, archwiki has a nice guide for it but it's also well documented and there are lots of youtube video on it.The initial setup may be a bit annoying but it works really well.
>>109638911Thank you, anon. I'll look into figuring out how to make this work in Gentoo.
>>109638523>gamerealtime 3D graphics <> gameCalling simulators games is like calling water food.
>>109638634fwiw you need integrated graphics to do passthrough of the discreet gpu, or an extra gpu, because the passthrough one is totally given up.unless you ran the host headless
>>109638347>>109638170Open up a coding agent, tell him to implement a working pipeline.
>>109638623true, but I will still keep an eye on them
>picAnyone who uses an eGPU with anything other than a laptop is a retard.
