In 2024, I bought a 12TB internal HDD for $110. It's now $400. What the fuck? I thought AI only impacted ram, nvme ssd's and so on. Why are mechanical hdd's being hit this hard?
>>

They're used to store the training data, as well as some AI output. Additionally, the PCBs still use flash memory and that's fucked. But what's driving it the most is the fact PEOPLE WILL STILL PAY FOR IT, including businesses who are willing to pay 4X normal price if it means they get it before you. Tulip craze, except people want all kinds of flowers basically.

>PEOPLE WILL STILL PAY FOR IT, including businesses who are willing to pay 4X normal price if it means they get it before you
Because they have no choice. They're essential components. Sure, consumers can try to ride it out, but businesses have to rotate HDD's routinely.

Those 20TB LLMs need to be stored somewhere, anon

All of your semiconductor equipment relies on precision mechanical and optical equipment, which I personally as someone who worked in the industry (though, as a chemical engineer) felt like was completely undervalued.

I am glad about the price increases, it makes you appreciate the work these excellent engineers put into it more I hope

Some entities that would have purchased SSDs are now accepting the limitations of using HDDs due to cost concerns. This drives up the price of hard drives. As long as the cost is still lower per byte than SSDs, there will be some amount of demand displacement.
>>
>>109641543
that would get you a lot of replies on reddit

Feeling annoyed by this myself, I went and dug through my collection of old external hard drives, and sure enough, there were a few perfectly fine 4T drives. I pulled them out of their old USB2.0 enclosures and slapped on some USB3 controllers from shucked drives. Feels both pathetic and vindicating to at least back shit up again without paying scalper prices.

Pathetic, but such is clown world.

>In 2024, I bought a 12TB internal HDD for $110
HDDs were cheaper, but not that cheap. That was not the average going rate for a brand new, unused 12TB drive in 2024.

Beside what others have already said: It's possible to use clusters of ssd drives for large llms as an additiont to VRAM and RAM. For example think of 10x nvme drives with each a max read spead of ~15gb/s having together 150gb/s, that's about the speed of dual channel DDR5 ram. Is it fucked up? Yeah. Is it fucking expensive. Fuck yeah. But at the same time it is often the ony option if you want to test extremely large models without paying millions for a server (cluster) that could do that.

So now a fuckload of SSDs are gone from the market, but you still need fast data storage and then you start to cluster HDD in Raid to compensate for the expensive SSD. So HDD demand also gets even higher.

just buy picrel 20TB WD Elements
>Ultrastar HC560 inside
>>
>>109641911
Uses or refurbished 12tb's were that cheap. Most people who run raids dont buy new
>>
>>109642256
Then you should compare used prices to used prices, not to a brand new drive with full warranty.
>>
>>109642062
I bought that shit for €350 a few months ago
>>
>bought 4x20TB toshibas, 2x4tb samsung 990s, and a full AM5 setup just before the prices jumped

feels good man.
>>
>>109642256
>Most people who run raids dont buy new
Isn't that risky as fuck? Btw i have 2 4tb's wd blue hhd's. Should i raid them or just use them as they are?
>>
>>109642062
>bought 2x 18tb drives back in may for £275 each
>delivery date keeps getting pushed back due to lack of stock
>finally get them months later, still at the price I paid for then
Today £280 only gets you a 4tb drive, I just managed to sneak in before prices went ballistic. The same drives are now £439.
>>
>>109642312
No, if you want redundancy with just 2 drives and don't plan to expand the array, just mirror them.
>>
>>109642256
I can buy 20tb drives used for the same price today as I bought them new 2 years ago. So it's not all that bad.
>>
>>109641595
It's just the sentiment I have towards the situation. HDDs were too cheap for what they give us
>>
>>109641170
>>109641209
>>109641220
At this point companies are just putting whatever prices they think will scare regular people away from buying them. I wouldn't be surprised if more people start gambling on ebay components for the next few years, even if they run the risk of malware.
>>
>>109641170
>In 2024, I bought a 12TB internal HDD for $110
I bought several 10TB hdds in 2024 and they cost significantly more. $110 is cheaper than second hand price.
>>
>>109642923
I'm sure you'll appreciate my shit stain ring in my toilet when i shove your dumbass fucking face into it for acting like a queer. You queer.
>>
>>109641170
higher prices are gatekeeping poors from entering and ruining the pc-building hobby. that's a good thing.
>>
>>109643029
$107 actually off Amazon. Guess I got lucky. Still working 100% fine with no errors.
>>
>>109641170
Now look at hard drives that no datacenter would ever buy and use and notice how they too have been inflated.

>>109642943
Trusting ebay for drives is more than a little dodgy. That seagate is a good price to the point it probably doesn't fucking work, meanwhile a $45 1TB is still far too much.
>>
>>109641543
this, i think the same should go with food. farmers are underappreciated, food should be 10x as expensive as it is today, that will help people appreciate the work these excellent farmers put into it more, i hope.

it was £300 and I thought "Nah the price will drop."
>>
my server is probably worth $20k now because i was a huge hoarder back in the day and have a shit load of storage
>>
>>109647420
and think of the data you could sell to an ai startup
>>
>>109643946
Brainlet take, the real problem is that entire F1000 are going screw over hard when replacement/upgrade time comes along. Requisition and order fulfillment is going to be very expensive, lengthy difficult for no go reason.
The only winners are the hardware manufacturers and their shareholders.
>>
>>109641170
I paid that much for my 24TB drive last year wtf?
>>
>>109647373
I got two 24TB drives for my NAS and it still doesn't feel like enough with all the totally legally obtained 4k movies and porn I have on it.

>>109641170
Just wait—in a year AI will have revealed the true market price for all technology: more expensive than eater wagies can afford. Start a business—with AI—or perish.

>>
>>109641209
I think the hole industry is hiking up prices and blames it on the ominous "AI", something else you can be mad at but not the people manufacturing.
Usually price increases due to shortages actually come with an actual shortage of hardware. But I can buy everything. Everything is stocked up, RAM, SSDs and HDDs.
It is just the price that went up.
>>
>>109641170
tech will experience the worst price collapse in history when the bubble pops because capable AI will be 100% free and open source (they've been shilling to investors that AI will be a multi-trillion dollar industry)
investors are some of the dumbest people on the planet, but even they are beginning to question the narrative, and when they pull out all the grifters will be dragged down to hell where they belong
make sure to hunt them down and hang them when they try to make you foot the bill for the collapse (they always do)
>>
>>109641170
as well as the shortage hitting ssds causing people to buy hdds as an alternative there's a single manufacturer that makes some integral part of hdds too which have upped prices recently
