what are the technological implications of this?

trannies really infest everything huh
>>
>>109644344
The rm step looks unsafe, if cjxl fails for whatever reason you will lose the original. I've run into jpegs before that were out of spec or something which cjxl failed to read and I had to manually unfuck them.
>>
>>109644344
Why would they add support for an image format that isn't supported on 4chan?

give it another 8 years and hiroshima will add it

Are there any performance numbers yet? Picrel is old but it showed why most people don't want to adopt jpeg xl.
>>
>>109645162
Void-san added webp support to umigalaxy, he could add jxl support next desu. I doubt 4chan will ever add webp support in the near future desu.
>>
>>109645355
kek what is this cope, jxl is way faster to decode and encoding doesnt matter
>>
>>109644344
Cute fox jumpscare.
>>
>>109645425
That's why I literally said
>Picrel is old

AVIF used to be more palatable since it can use AV1 hw to decode. but if jpeg xl decoding becomes fast enough then that wouldn't be as impressive anymore.
>>
So when will 4chan support JPEG XL?
>>
>>109645670
see >>109645380

Support for webp = possible support for jxl
>>
Once again 4chan is behind the curve. It would take claude 5 minutes to enable JXL on 4chan but no they'd rather implement harder captchas.

Not exactly, "jxl" is a multi-use format that encompasses animation sequencing, progressive decoding, multi-layers, etc etc. And while all those things are pretty fucking cool they make new ways for sharty to hide CP/malware.

Arguably webp is actually more safe to implement because it lacks many of the complex features of jxl.

It usually doesn't matter to users but it does to high traffic websites who have to deal with millions of images on a daily basis.
That said as you can see from picrel it's quite expensive but a $10,000 Xilinx accelerator is cheaper than hosting bloated JPG files long-term.

I really do hope they improved decoding performance enough. It's really the only thing wrong with JXL, other than that it's the perfect can-do-it-all kind of thing we all need desu.

Google gets shit on for not adding support sooner but wouldn't it have been a massive PR disaster (for JXL) if they had?

this is mostly theoretical
no browser (at least non smartphone ones, idk there) uses hardware decoding for avif

It's probably only phones that are 10% as powerful (ie see them trying to run windows XP while getting 9001 gookbench scores) as actual desktop PCs that need it, it's been listed in the Android 14 docs.

>>109644344
So what was the point of AVIF again if it is getting deprecated four years in, lol?
>>
>>109650371
The only reason it was promoted was because of google's NIH syndrome and internal politics pushing it instead of jxl.
>>
>>109650257
Pakistanis and Indians are basically interchangeable in terms of genetics, but it's more effective to lob "Pakistani" as an insult, because standard jeets (AKA Indians) get insanely offended when you call them Pakis. So, to answer your question, you must go back.
>>
>>109650371
We can only hope that they rip out AVIF again, or else it will stay around as dead code that nobody uses, but that is still an attack surface.

Similar to how 4chan got hacked because its pdf thumbnail software also parsed unused postscript, and minecraft servers got hacked because their logging library supports unused LDAP links, we may get hacked because of our browsers supporting unused AVIF.

You're all really underestimating the fact that AVIF is in fact just AV1 pretending to be an image format. Unlike Webp, AVIF has a baseline profile that was explicitly made to be be fed into AV1 hardware decoders. JXL for all the cool shit it has, does not have this advantage, everyone is essentially crossing their fingers really hard that software JXL decoding will become super duper fast in the future so nobody will care.

You can preview what this is like with webm related, it was a png converted to VP9 yuv420p with stream loop enabled. If your playback device supports VP9 hardware video decoding then this will completely bypass the CPU as it scams the VP9 hardware video decoder thinking it's a video file. Same thing happens with AVIF on AV1 hardware decoders except it's now more standardized and not just a shitty hack like webm related.

Added JPEG XL to my chan. Still a few kinks to work out. This is a very insecure format for being so new. PNG has start/stop boundaries. JPEG XL by design does not and in fact is designed to permit garbage added to the file. Must have been a 4chan poster that made this.

install the official cjxl wrapper and just ask ai sloppa to make a shell script that feeds the images in parallel, it oneshot it for me on both linux and macos
