How impressive were Doom 3 and id Tech 4 in 2004? Most GPUs, such as the GeForce4 MX 440, couldn't handle it.

Pfff. You can play Doom 3 on a Voodoo 2 if you're autistic enough.
Anyways, turning that time it still had a wow factor graphics wise, but the atmosphere and how it was executed was the bigger wow.

That was a budget card, you'd want a Ti not MX.

Some specific parts of it were impressive: Dynamic lights, the weird little computer terminals, bump/specular mapping.
The 'shiny' look kinda started with D3 and got fatiguing really quickly. It also marked a return to the muted color palettes (though Quake 4 was worse).
>>
>>109647612
The shadowing was very impressive. It was one of the few games that had limbs cast shadows on bodies and lighting inside shadows. It did it surprisingly efficiently for its time.
>>
Impressive, but lack of a flashlight in the beginning until they added one later killed the game. I don't remember many people I knew being able to run it at the time. Kind of an ugly looking game too. But it was fun.

Meh.. the true wow moment in gaming was Bioshock when your realized the cinematic wasn't a cinematic anymore and real time video game graphics had finally hit Final Fantasy 8 CGI levels of graphics. That shit gave me literal chills. The follow up moment imo was seeing unreal engine demo tech running on the shitty little apple ipod as it superheated the device and burned your hand xD.

i was looking recently at my old folder of "mind-blowing" videogame graphics and it's all shit like this. very funny in hindsight
>>109647736
the whole point was that you use your muzzle flash and imp fireballs to keep track of where your enemies are

Everyone hated it. Compared to the quake 3 engine doom 3 looks ugly as FUCK only for some shadows meme this was the start when games started to look ugly as FUCK and they never really recovered. When I have time I post examples.
>>
I had the cheaper PCI model of that mx 440. It might've been shit for PC games, but for PS1 emulation it was amazing . Now, even the raspberry pi 4b can do ps1 emulation.

I did not gaym that much back in the day. I remember I bought some entry level ATI gpu for Doom 3 and had it running at 30 fps, sometimes less if I remember correctly.
Before Doom 3 released its E3 demo was leaked, I remember that ran like 10-15 fps I think.
It was really atmospheric back then.
>>
>>109647938
I mean back then you could buy a decent gpu for $200 but these days it would cost you at least $500.
>>
>>109647881
Thanks. I can post star trek elite force in game graphics or Jedi academy who use a enhanced q2 engine and q3. I can post unreal 2 and everyone knows how half life 2 looks.

The truth is that the D3 engine looks like shit! The characters look like they are made from clay that did come from Satan's ass and everything has this ugly way of looking. Literally the only place this shit fits in a horror game where they are mining hell and everything is getting corrupted by hells evil. Quake 4 looks like shit.

This started the trend of games doing more retarded shit like that piss filter that was supposed to look realistic or motion blure and fov bullshit we have today.
>>
>>109647923
??? What did you mean by this you autistic retard?
Post anything with human characters.
>>
>>109647918
>have always attributed
Then you are retarded. The game has absoluter darkness and when you pull out the flashlight it cuts a perfect unrealistic circle of a visible area.
The original game was build around this you where supposed to switch between not seeing anything and having a gun or seeing things and no gun. It was supposed to be a horror game.

unless you count 540p 10fps as run
>>
It was probably technically impressive but everyone was playing GTA back then, doom 3 was kinda mid
>>
It was amazing graphically, like a generational leap. I didn't mind the gameplay that much but people really hated it. I had a pretty high end system at the time and still had to play it at some shit resolution to get decent framerates until the 6800gt came out.
>>
>>109647612
It was extraordinary at the time. The graphics were jaw-dropping and it was very difficult to run. Me and all my friends at the time were all stunned looking at this game. I had a 9800 Pro 128MB graphics card at the time, which was the fastest among our friend group, and I was the only one able to kinda play it with the settings cranked up a bit, but I remember the 128MB VRAM were insufficient and I couldn't max it out. Even then I think I played it at like 30-50 FPS and I still remember that the performance dropped heavily in larger open areas. The lighting and shadows especially were super impressive at the time, the whole game just looked incredibly good and like a massive, massive leap over most everything else I had played before.

I also really loved the game back then and the horror was very effective on me, young as I was. I replayed it a few years ago in VR, which was a cool experience in and of itself, but without seeing it through a kid's eyes the game was less impressive and no longer scary. I remember how terrified I was of imps spawning behind me as a kid, as an adult the first thing I noticed was that the spawn animation was so slow I could rush them with the shotgun and kill them before it ended. Magic's gone.

>>109647612

not true
i never bought (too) expensive gpus and i played it
got og version
got community download version
and i found loonix has a hook that lets it run natively which is great

>as an adult the first thing I noticed was that the spawn animation was so slow I could rush them with the shotgun and kill them before it ended. Magic's gone.
The game is full of bafflingly shit encounter design like this. I blame Tim Willits for all of Doom 3's gameplay faults. The man was a competent level designer in the Doom 2/Quake days but clearly didn't truly understand what makes a game actually fun when he snaked his way into the general game design position.
Gameplay issues aside though the game really is a technical marvel. Aspects of it look genuinely impressive even now yet it can run on shockingly modest hardware if you're willing to dial back the resolution and quality settings enough while still looking decent. I've been toying around with XP era hardware a bunch lately and it's been fun running the game on a Barton Athlon XP and duo of FX 5700s I have (one a regular, the other an Ultra with much faster memory).

Not doom, but I remember how impressed I was by shoc back when I found its press demo on a magazine dvd.
It was like the most realistic thing I seen at that time. Obviously that demo was bumped&maxed on graphics on a cherry picked single map, but it was leagues ahead of stuff like hl2/css, mmo, I played at that time.

Remember the Doom 3 Xbox port?

You can't stress enough how Xbox's soul and old guard is gone

>Ed Fries
>Seamus Blackley (he wanted Xbox to be Dreamcast 2)
>Peter Moore
>Bungie and Halo
>Peter Molyneux and Fable
>Todd Howard and Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim (Where's Elder Scrolls VI???)
>Cliff Bleszinski and Gears of War
>Bioware and KOTOR and Mass Effect
>Shane Kim
>Phil Spencer
>Microsoft 'Gutted' id Sofware with layoffs
>Microsoft outsourced Campaign Evolved to 15+ studios

It's just Indians now

Also fun fact: despite stalker builds being leaked, I never found that specific one.

It was like an empty map of bar merged with the wilderness train courtyard to the west and at least one multiplayer map. You had bolts and anomalies. The graphics and physics wereuch better than in the retail version, too. It was on dvd of a german gaming magazine.

The Xbox version is how I first played it. I didn't truly appreciate it at the time but that port is a hell of a job. The OG Xbox has such a unique and interesting identity about it that was completely lost even by the latter half of the 360 era.

Halo 2 was originally going to use a Doom 3 esque lighting system that was fully dynamic, and featured inky stencil shadows. They had to drop it midway through development, and fall back to an updated version of CE's renderer. They didn't redo the assets, so the final game just looks really flat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00zI2ryLp5s

Specular on bsp is all kinds of broken in Halo 2, different ways depending on version of the game. Bungie disabled it on many surfaces because of this. In MCC it has a broken directional computation, in Vista it just doesn't work at all. Halo 2's maps were so big the original Xbox couldn't handle it. Containment is the biggest map in Halo 2

Halo 2 had to run on a GeForce3. Doom 3 was made for GeForce 6800

I wonder how /pol/ zoomers would react when they know the that GPU slot used to be called AGP.

Do you have brain damaged? It looks like shit everyone hated how it looks. Literally games released before it looked better. This retarded look forced by a shit engine was the plague of the 2000s literally everyone was shocked how bad games looked back then in contrast to the previous year.

It is literally a meme engine for a retarded shadow render meme.
