The purpose of the chink models is to undercut American AI models. It has been china's MO for everything for decades. They copy and sell at a lower price at a scale that others can't compete with because the CCP compensates the company absorbing the losses. Eventually the original creators go out of business because they can't compete with that kind of setup.They're even doing it with their endless gacha slop so gaming is pretty fucking shitty now, too, if you happened to watch Gamescom a couple days ago.

All of Deepseek research papers are about optimising something to cost less tokens or parameters or memory for same output, while OpenAI and Anthropic are trying to increase capabilities and push the frontier while making affordable models is just an afterthought they probably just run with the most lazy of distillation techniques, stuff like Luna, Sonnet and so on.
