>>109660416>"old" means different things hereIt depends on which thread you're in and which board you're in. "Old" is obviously undefined in conversations and shouldn't be used until it's meaning is fully established in the current context. It's just like words "good", "bad", "big", "bloated", etc. None of them mean anything. Starting conversations using those words is retarded.A good example is >>>/vr/. The board clearly defines "retro" to effectively mean "it can legally drink in the US" (older than 20 years), and yet you still see a lot of people claiming Switch and PS4 are retro consoles.

>>109659815either cachyos or fedora>both are 'normal' and user friendly in the sense that a person who doenst know shit can download an iso, put it on a usb and have a working desktop (unlike nix,arch...).>both have relatively new software (at most 6 months old in fedora's case)>both have big install/userbases which suggests they wont 'just go away' like some small-userbase distros with 1 developercachy is more fancy ,feature rich and fast moving like it has auto btrfs snapshots in the stock install where's you need special setup in fedora's case. but cachyos is only 5 yearsold where's fedora/the redhat ecosystem is like 25 years old. i have both installed on different PCs my main system is fedora KDE and ive never had an issue in since fedora 41. the only one that can dethrone these two in the near future IMO is universal blue (bazzite, aurora, bluefin) just for being consistent, immutable, using container tech and being practically unbreakable.
>>109661122it's always been a pain for me, I like to have the latest (like not necessarily latest stable just latest period) software and it was just always a headache
>>109661133Skill issue. I mean no hate. Gentoo requires a bit of an investment but you get so much more out of it. And the end result is usually rock solid. Most of the issues come from people not following directions or not knowing Linux. It takes a while to get used to but it’s the only family of Linux that’s survived this long for me. This i5 8400 has had the same install of Gentoo since I built the machine back in 2018. I mean yes I’ve updated it since but zero reinstalls. I’ve used arch on other machines and it doesn’t last. At least it’s fast and easy to reinstall.
>>109661164I had to do shit like manually unmasking packages to get the latest versions and yeah that's my bad but on Arch it's no hassle. Picrel is last time I used Gentoo seriously, seems like forever ago
>omarshitunironic larper distro
>>109661187They’re masked on purpose. Gentoo is used in companies and science. If you want the latest programs, use flatpaks. Leave the base system alone. Even then I find flatpaks on gentoo to be faster than even on arch. I’m not saying arch is slow. It’s one of the better distros out there. If you don’t need steam, you don’t need systemd. That speeds up things significantly.
>install fedora kde>click "yes" when asked about third party nonfree repositoriesIt just works>install steam for shit you buy>install heroic launcher for shit you pirateHere’s your gaming boo>i need moar softwareThere’s a gui for that called Discover, just write what you want and install itThe only thing your boomer grandpa couldn’t get working easily is backups with snapper, as you need iq over 20 and to use console. Other than that everything is dead simple.
