Why doesn't Nvidia open source access to their architectures so customers can develop their own implementations of it? Things like how inadequate Nvidia's Linux support has been would go away if the community had the tools to write and support a driver of their own.The argument they can't own the market doesn't really hold water because no one is making their hardware but them. All it would do is make it possible to use their hardware separate from implementations they have to permit and support, what's the harm? If they wanted to encourage purchasers to upgrade they can simply deprecate the tools needed to integrate code with their newer architectures (which would probably be reverse-engineered anyway to support newer stuff but that would represent an edge scenario regardless – most use-cases would simply buy the newer iteration that's properly supported in the mainstream).
