GOOD. ABOUT TIME. Get rid o those rogue apps.

One extra hurdle isn't the end though. Any power user can easily enable non-google signed apk installations. Its one toggle with a 24 hour waiting period to permanently remove the restriction. It's not like many normies were installing stuff from outside the play store in the first place. Most people that are on a GMS certified OS are doing it for piracy anyway, because any form of privacy isn't achievable with that operating system in the first place. Actually privacy respecting third party AOSP forks aren't affected.

I do not have that problem on my lineageos.

No. I'm switching to GrapheneOS before I resort to buying an apple product. After that I'll buy messenger pigeons.
>>
>>109669354
Same person. I should have said "another apple product." I've owned two in my life and that was enough to make me never want another one.
>>
>>109666088
you stupid americans.. you do know that you dont have to update to new malware? All these phone toddlers are the same.
>>
>>109669405
Yeah, that works until it doesn't, and then it's time to buy a new phone. So it's basically just Android tanking their future profits
>>
>>109667687
>only sideloading in eu
>rest of the world have to use a shady third party app
>security cert reset every 7 days

Yeah, Apple sideloading is a peice of piss isn't it!
>>
>>109669508
>sideloading
You mean installing
>>
>>109667461
except that happens THROUGH google play, meaning they can cuck you out of it at any point in time no questions asked. like I said. we lost.
>>
>>109669730
What are you on about? You don't need play store to install apks on your phone.
>>
>>109669405
You don't have to update, but...
>Phone starts getting worse
>battery life gets worse
>apps stop working because they're out of date
>phone is literally designed to make you buy a new one every couple years.
>>
Wasn't this thing about google disabling app sideloading supposed to be this september? At least the newpipe popup talking about it mentioned september 2026.
Gotta ask, are there any particular hoops one will have to jump through to get developer status to re-enable it? I'm working on a small android tool for my parents and it'd suck if I had to go through some ridiculous review just to run my own code.
>>
>>109671736
The restriction is enforced by Google play.
>>109671911
It's not an OS update, but a Google Play update. So it won't have any effect on those things. It is however pretty much mandatory if you want google play services to keep working properly.
>>109671991
Its done by region, so rollout is different for everyone. Disabling the restriction is not that hard. The question is if there will be an API that google certified apps can use to see if there are any non-google certified apps running on the device, and use that to refuse to run themselves. I know having developer options enabled will cause certain apps not to run already.
>>
>>109672023
Sooo do I lose anything if I just use F-droid and Aurora store instead?
>>
>109672023
Oh so you're saying that if I do happen to adb my own crap onto a phone, there's a chance things like some of the more draconic banking apps might refuse to work because the phone is now "potentially unsafe"? Wow, that would be bullshit.
>>
>>109669650
this.
>>
>>109666088

>>109666088

not my problem
>>
>>109666088
(Non-criminal) use case for unauthenticated apps? There isn't one—Google did the right thing here.
>>
>>109669650
>>109672453
Incorrect—sideloading is the Google-approved term for putting unsanctioned software on devices within Googles ecosystem. If you do not like the term then make your own OS and mobile ecosystem—no one is stopping you.
>>
>>109672023
So install play services in the profile sandbox thing of grapheneos and call it a day. Anything outside the sandbox would be none-the-wiser. Maybe this could be an issue if you want to leverage play services for notifications in your non-approved app?
>>
It's a bait and switch situation. A large portion of the user base are only using Android because it has never been a walled garden or controlled ecosystem.
Turning it into one after all these years is madness.
They may have included a path out but it marks you and lets other apps know so they can refuse to work. They've been doing that with root for years.
>>
>>109672051
No. Other than needing to disable the restriction once. The worry is that some developers may call it quits if this causes their userbase to shrink significantly.
>>109672762
It's only an issue on google certified operating systems. Play services doesn't have the permissions to enable that restriction on GrapheneOS.
>>
>>109672762
Not to sound like a conspiracy nut, but I think it's pretty funny that one running away from their smartphone being increasingly GOOGLED(tm) would resort to buying google hardware to do so.
>>
>>109673115
Hardware ! = software. Grapheneos uses Google hardware for specific reasons and are fully transparent about it. Motorola is in partnership with Grapheneos to produce a phone in the future. I've been daily driving Grapheneos for years on my Pixel 7 and don't plan to get a new phone until support is dropped.
>>
I have yet to see anyone properly articulate why google doing this is a bad thing when apple has been doing it forever, you always needed to fork over money to publish to the app store, its the only non-offensive way to filter out the fucking thirdies shitting up the entire ecosystem with their fucking malware slop "apps".
>>
>>109672709

>>
>>109674403

first, you are a jew kike
second, developers like newpipe and other jewtube apps don't want to get doxxed by googlestein
third, nobody decides what I can and cannot do on MY phone
fourth, fuck you nigger

>>109667461
>It's not like many normies were installing stuff from outside the play store in the first place.
I routinely install F-droid on friends' phones, usually for NewPipe or AdAway. Many of them continue using it by themselves when they realize apps there never have ads, micropayments and other cashcow crap. Now they're the ones recommending me apps from F-droid.

Apps in F-droid are still worth waiting 24 hours to install so I guess I will continue doing this, and Google won't stop here...
>>
Blatant lie. Moving on
>>
>>109667461
>It's not like many normies were installing stuff from outside the play store in the first place.
If this were true then it only inconveniences those already doing it. I switched to dumb phones because I'm not jumping through hoops and being treated like I need my handheld as a fucking adult.

Same. I'm good for it, because it means that there's an actual documented chain of libaility for the application, and that some Redeemer can't build a fake app and suck up your money.

Software is Licensed, Not Owned
Under copyright law, software is intellectual property. When you purchase a phone, you agree to an End User License Agreement (EULA) and various Terms of Service. These agreements grant you permission to use the software under specific conditions, but the manufacturer or software developer retains ownership. Because you do not own the software, the developer dictates the rules of its use and can legally restrict modifications, reverse engineering, or specific use cases. You may own the hardware, but the actual software, firmware, drivers make it a useless brick until you are bound by license agreements. Even a primitive Nokia phone has this license-built in.

You are not forced to use Anrdoid or iPhone. You are welcome to use any of the other OSes, or build your own cellphone from commodity parts and install an OS of your choosing.
>>
>>109674629
Its purpose is to make sure people don't install arbitrary software by social engineering. So its supposed to inconvenience the scammer, not the end user.

>>109674596
>adaway
>NewPipe
So its not primarily about freedom or privacy, its about using proprietary services without any form of payment (usually by ads)... Which could be called piracy. Which is what i said directly after the quote. If they'd actually care about the privacy and freedom aspect of it they shouldn't use a GMS certified OS, and this would completely be a non-issue.
>>
>>109666319
>Man fuck Google. Where do I send an angry gmail

I don't have google play services installed, and I don't have a single proprietary app on my phone. I assume I'm not affected? GrapheneOS on a Pixel

No need to wait if you use adb to install the apk. It only affects mobile only faggots who are too dumb for their own good.

You are still running proprietary malware on the baseband side of the chip that may have access to where ever it wants.
>>
>>109678165
You can do that with just a mobile device too. Just need to use an installer running via shizuku.

I would buy your argument if there was a viable alternative, but there simply isn't. Accepting Google will know a few things about me for their own (ok, and the NSA's) purposes doesn't mean I should give all my history to 3000 random data brokers from 192 different countries. That's unreasonable and frankly retarded.
>>

>>109678146
It wasn't yours to begin with. Any certified GMS device is owned by Google, not you. Unremovable proprietary malware with root access that can be controlled remotely makes it not yours, period.

This is EXACTLY why I trust him.
Even rossman admitted that he didn't like micay but that didn't mean grapheneOS wasn't good. You need autists and schizophrenic unbudging retards for matters relating to security.
