The sooner you all realize Discord is here to stay, and that IRC, XMPP, Mumble, Matrix, Signal, and others have failed & simply cannot outmatch that tech giant, the better. Adapt accordingly.
Hiding away in your little protocol burrows will not bring forth a new golden age. Ask yourself: Who's enjoying the Internet more?
The builders are using what is most convenient for them. They do not care about ideological purity.
>>
>>109673257
Of course discord will stay. XMPP/Jabber is for private conversations that require group E2EE and for a fallback when Discord is down, duh.
>>
>>109673257
Discord is wack tho and it's gonna lose some real niggaz when they force the ID shit properly.
>>
Discord has been very slowly shrinking since like 2021. If it didn't have such strong network effects it would already be dead on technical grounds. Unfortunately Revolt shot themselves in the foot by being in the UK. Fluxer seems vibecoded but has a decent amount of users, more than IRC anyway.

Why should I care what these "builders" are using?
>They do not care about ideological purity.
Neither do I hence why I use software with contributions from people I hate.
>>
>>109673257
Idk, IRC is still working fine for me
>>
>>109673257
Just a matter of time before the kids on Discord think IRC is cool because it's old and didn't go away. Also, it can be ran in the terminal, so all the newfag Linux users will go bananas for it.
>>
>>109673327
That could happen sooner than later once people grow weary of the Age/ID humiliation ritual.
>>
>>109673303
>Why should I care what these "builders" are using?
FOSS projects, modding communities, game communities and everything else in that sphere has been mostly taken over by Discord.

What do we find whenever we search for a FOSS project, a website or community that IS active and might have people who make things? Usually, a Discord server. Perhaps even a Twitter account. It might even have its own dedicated subreddit.
Any project or community (including the indie ones) looking to be "serious" will have at least one of these things, and that's just the way it is. As a result, the real makers are all inside of social media and Discord servers. That can't be fixed within a short amount of time.

Okay, that's actually a fair point. Keeping tabs on where they go (which, as you mention, is primarily Discord) is good.

>Age/ID humiliation ritual.
What is this? My news source is exclusively 4chan and my Grandma, so I have no idea what this is about. Is Discord doing an 18+ thing?
>>
>>109673403
They are using AI and string matches to determine who should get the prompt to require uploading ID and face scans. Not everyone gets one but that could change with time.

This site has enough global attention it could happen here too but would require code changes so maybe they would drag that out.
>>
>>109673257
>The builders
Nothing is built on discord. Nothing has been built on the internet past 2012.
Larp larp Sahur
>>
>>109673436
>require uploading ID and face scans
Yeah, I suppose it's only a matter of time. When the internet becomes more real then reality, and stops being a place for creativity and horsing around, and becomes a more convenient "reality".
That's why I've been building my library, preparing for that day when the internet gets to serious, and it's time for me to sign off for good.
>>
>>109673257
>The builders are using what is most convenient for them

ye, but those builders are lower level than those who are on Telegram. for example Artix has no discord, only telegram.

discord is created for and by mediocre builders. usually to align with reddit or with a spawn/generation of gamers who used it like 5 years and doesnt really try stuff.

does Discord has Donald Trump channel? - nope, but Telegram has. you may have a chat and you may have a logs dump, a channel that you may share with anyone like that https://t.me/s/real_DonaldJTrump

they are playing with web techs and maybe every user can have own web site, like https://www.techtimes.com/articles/324877/20260818/telegram-reportedly-applied-gram-billion-users-would-get-telegram-subdomains-not-domains.htm

discord, in contrary, a walled garden like xitter. have a nice stay.
>>
>>109673327
The shininess of IRC will wear off for those folk if they ever get to try it. With Discord, they take the following features for granted:
>message history without needing to rely on a bouncer or capable & configured server
>being able to see and interact with all of a guild's channels, and see all members, including offline ones at a whim and without additional work
>visually consistent and available desktop, web, and mobile clients (their mobile client hasn't been visually consistent with the others for a while though)
>direct attachment uploading and embedding
>replies instead of tagging nicks and quoting words directly
>newb-friendly boolean-toggle permission ACL system through colored ranks
>"twemoji" instead of ascii emoticons, + message reactions
>Discord bots that can be added, given some permissions and let loose versus basic guild plugins and custom features requiring manual implementation and configuration
>voice calls, both 1:1 and group alongside guild voice channels, which are easily accessible
>voice calls channels allowing for additional video & screen sharing
>joining a guild being as easy as clicking on a link and pressing a big button

Screensharing and group calls tend to be where they draw the line. It doesn't matter how good your shit is if you don't have screensharing or the ability to talk with more than one person. That alone is a big reason why Discord finished off Mumble's lunch after people initially moved over to Skype (which also had screensharing)

Discord's isolated nature allows people to ignore the centralized reality of the website. It's a big part that explains why most modern "hackers" often make the retarded choice to run their C&C through Discord guilds & webhooks. Discord psychologically gives the user the same exact feeling they would get if they were to host their own little IRC server that's only known if they explicitly put in an effort to make it known. "Anything can happen here" explains their juvenile rep.
>>
>>109673524
>That's why I've been building my library
same
>>
>>109673565
I appreciate the effort you put into your post.
Discord is an over-engineered piece of dog shit. All those extra features is like an Apple Play in a Truck. What is the world coming to, it worked before, why add so much non-sense that it becomes bologna? What the next step, VR Time Square? Ridiculous. IRC will make a comeback. Discord's days are numbered IMO.
>>
I'm STILL fed up of Discord being sloppy for months, if not years.
Nothing keeps me tied to it and I'm not giving any money while they still have Palantir onboard.
>>
>>109673565
I will greentext all the fuck I want on a Discord server. The reply feature is just a stroke of bloat.

Books, Music, Movies, Shows?
My book library is stacked, and I just got a handful of SACD's of the greatest musical recordings known to this age, and as far as Shows go, I really only like "Stargate", "Silo", "Wheel of Fortune", and "Green Bay Packers" football. What are you stacking?

>IRC will make a comeback
If only. The protocol would have to be forked and heavily extended if programmers are interested in siphoning users away from Discord. Even though they're in the midst of the "rugpull" state of giving a service away for "free", users remain tethered and will ignore it as long as they can use it. The imaginary debt people have to this service is so much higher than it was with Teamspeak and Skype, especially since so many real-world projects and communities rely on Discord for everything, including message archival.
>eats up forums, steals food from Reddit
>eats up Skype, wounds Teamspeak and leaves it for dead, drives Google Hangouts to suicide and starves IRC, XMPP and Mumble
>makes SMS and phone calls obsolete for normals&gamers if the others didn't do that already (think about obsession with "group chats" over at social media platforms)
It's so fucking popular that Microsoft is using and advertising their Discord guilds instead of shilling their own services.
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/ifdef-windows/introducing-the-microsoft-store-channel-on-discord/
Did any of you ever hear about an official, public Microsoft IRC server back in the day?

This only solves problems server admins care about, not users. IRC needs to have multimedia support to have a prayer of being relevant again and just hoping everyone's client will embed images from third-party servers from embedded links for them is pants on head retarded but probably seems sane to the Unixtards that tend to run IRC networks.

>>
>>109674509
the masses are not satisfied with having to quickswitch between super fast chat and super slow long chat. you have to make it be both
>>
>>109674509
forums are still around, just private or semi-private the way they should be. blocking all the bots is critical or the big platforms will try to shut them down.

so step 1 is block the bots https://nochan.net/b/Internet-Crap/20260606-How-To-Block-Some-Of-The-Bots/
>>
>>109673257
I fucking hate Discord for mass discussion. Its more suited for small groups of friends, otherwise it turns into an echo chamber and little fiefdom ran by some gay mod
>>
>>109674821
>>109674824
nothing to do with why forums died the first time.
>>
>>109674846
and the masses have become accustomed to discord's fast-paced environment. in the age of basedcial media, you should not expect them to WANT to go back to slow-placed long discussion where you have to think hard about what you want to say anytime soon
>>
>>109674846
there are a plethora of reasons some disbanded. many still exist and the big platforms will never learn about them. ;-)

Ultimately, all of these are tools for communicating, it doesn't matter how fancy the protocol is, what matters is if you have someone to talk with there.

>>

keep it anonymous with ids like /pol, this way you can keep track who replies to whom within threads and not have to deal with 'reputation'.

>>being able to see and interact with all of a guild's channels, and see all members, including offline ones at a whim and without additional work
See previous
>>visually consistent and available desktop, web, and mobile clients...
1) No. Discord in compact mode is very different and not available on mobile.
2) I want my client to be tailored to its environment. People make way too big a deal about visual consistency when ergonomics and discoverability are far more important
>>direct attachment...
We don't actually want to see your cock and would like you to stop sending links to it in the channel.
>>replies instead of tagging...
It doesn't matter since the normal chat channels can't thread so it might as well just be a tag.
>>newb-friendly boolean-toggle permission ACL ...
I don't think that's newb friendly, it's just another system and you happen to be used to it.
>>"twemoji"...
I would disable unicode emojis if I could.
>>Discord bots that can be added...
lol if there's anything IRC wins with it's the ease of writing and adding bots.
>>voice calls...
I don't want you to be able to call me, that's annoying. If I had it my way there wouldn't even be a chat and you could only email me.
>>voice calls channels...
See previous.
>>joining a guild...
IMO it's actually harder than IRC because you need invite links which are always expiring. The public discoveribility approaches on Discord are bigger hacks than most of the things on IRC.
>>
>>109673565

It hurts to see it plainly stated like that, but all of what you've typed is true. There is not a single alternative offering the same level of convenience, spyware or not spyware. Until a FOSS and true private alternative can compete with this all discord competitors are just doomed to fail
