Why would you hop to a distro that has packages >2 years out of date? I used Debian as my daily driver for over a year and I would not recommend it to anyone.

You gain a system that you have to configure to install newer packages from third party sources (e.g. drivers, libraries, whatever else you want/need to be as fresh as possible), if not build the software itself for your machine. But in and of itself, it's not a bad system.

If you want to make the most out of it, setup arch with lxqt, using linux-lts, lightdm and ufw, and just download the packages you want to use. If you want to stick with Mint, use Mint XFCE edition, enable ufw and download zram-tools, then reboot. If you want to use debian, again, you probably want to use LXqt and lightdm and you can download zram-tools, enable ufw and then reboot.

If you think it can handle something a bit more modern; Look up fedora-spins, grab fedora xfce or lxqt. Everything is already configured.

I switched from Linux Mint to Debian. It's fine. My hard drive with Mint on it died, so I didn't 'distro hop.' My thought process was that Mint is based on Debian, so why not just use Debian. Debian has cinnamon so that's cool.

You can install Gnome, KDE or whatever you want on LMDE if you don't want Cinnamon. Still is better than pure debian because Debian's cinnamon packages are frozen.

Pretty much this.. it's not too much work to install fresh if you keep a list of all installed packages and your dotfiles in your backups. Once you have that you can migrate to a new install easily.

Until a few days ago I would have said less AI focus... but other OS exist. I hope Devuan considers a vote like Debian, but to not go proposal E and rather do something like Gentoo does on forbidding AI downstream. Mint already unbreaks a lot from Ubuntu such as removing snaps and telemetry.
