As someone who grew up using Slackware and eventually ended up here on Pop/Fedora. There is no reason to use Gentoo/Slackware/LFS or any other DYI distro unless you're a hobbyist.
There are too many solid plug-n-play distros now that literally just work.

I learned so much more using Gentoo than I did on Arch. If you want to understand Linux, and if you like tweaking and stimming, yes it is.
What many don't understand about Gentoo is that it's extremely flexible. You can do things *your* way. People think it makes you jump through hoops, but it really doesn't, unless you want to follow the handbook *exactly*.

I heard someone saying he wasted a whole day compiling the kernel and then compiling KDE Plasma only for his whole installation to fail because of sys-libs/zlib needing some flag (probably minizip). First of all, you DO NOT HAVE TO COMPILE if you use the default USE flags and default profiles. Install your system first so you can actually use it, and then start tweaking. There's a binary package for everything. Use gentoo-kernel-bin as the kernel (binary version of the distribution kernel) when installing for the first time in your life. Second of all, that minizip thing is probably a bug (the default profiles are supposed to "just work") but even then you can use --autounmask-continue as a parameter for emerge if you don't understand how to use USE flags yet.
