How can you justify the time sink that is NixOS?
>>
>>109683216
You already made this thread, but it was Mint and Arch. Spamming is against the rules.

I edited the original because I was seething over NixOS

It's the same shit. No excuses.
Get in the van.

Fantastic threads guys, really love the kind of posts I'm seeing on the board tonight.

Simple. You remind yourself that you are learning the Nix programming language.
>>109683278
It's nixxer. Get it right.
>>
>time sink
there's so much documentation out there and LLMs that can just write you config code and teach you nix, I'm not sure how anyone can come to this conclusion if you value reproducibility and flexibility or if you write code at all
nix develop and devenv rule
>>
>>109683385
This. If you are using Codex or Claude Code, NixOS is a breeze to set shit up on.

Before I could agree that it was annoying to have to edit file, restart, repeat, find outdated info or useless forum posts.

Now you just make the LLM trawl through that and frontier models are good enough to troubleshoot with you.
>>
>>109683216
this is possibly the most dimwitted post i've seen in weeks, if you're actually serious.
the whole point of nixlang as an abstraction is you don't continue tinkering after you've already sufficiently implemented your config. after that point it's just tweaking your package list and updating. the underlying implementations shift and you passively reap the benefits. if there are problems upstream and, God forbid, something wrong, you just press arrow key down at your bootloader.
it's the opposite end of the spectrum from Arch tinkertranny bullshit by definition, where you genuinely have to persistently tweak and stay on top of all the disparate systems mentally, lest you break your system in some arcane way or catch malware in the face.

>Documentation required
A desktop OS should just work to the extent you don't need to know much about it, a desktop OS exists for the purpose of using software, not for the sake of using and fiddling with the OS itself
>>
>>109683216
I can't, this is why I went back to archlinux after about 4 weeks of full-time nixos.
also tried guix and silverblue, this atomic shit is beyond worthless, I'm glad it's not taking off.

That's Mint not Arch

>>
>>109684765
What's worse is that this came up in the context of OP calling NixOS a timsink as bait. When someone's answer is "I pay an AI to learn it and use it for me," he's effectively telling you he doesn't think it's worth his time to study it and use it directly himself.
>>
>>109684429
How is the package manager on Guix?
Gentoo Hurd Exist and the joke is it was released on April fools but is real. I tried to, but didn't get it working. Regular Gentoo runs fine.
>>
this image is completely wrong. nixos and arch users don't turn off their PCs
>>
>>109683216
NixOS works completely fine with KDE Plasma.
When I tried GNOME, it pulled in a load of crap I didn't want and the installer text was too small. Pantheon is nice, but felt too glitchy with disappearing UI and text.

And why does it pull in Vim and xterm when I enable the X11 server? I'll just stay with the Wayland session.
>>
>>109684429
Using Guix is worlds apart from Nix, but it's mainly just the similar idea. I find the syntax of guile easier to work with, but still important for both projects to have good documentation on how to do stuff.

I have 2 servers, since ansible is pretty annoying to work with it was definitely worth it. Also if you have a good foundation in software dev there's nothing special about nix apart it being just another ML style language
>>
>>109686206
How do you manage your services running on those servers?

>>
>>109684765
>>109684831
I and many others already use one or both tools so yes, I will spend the tiny sliver of usage to save myself the hassle. However, I have used NixOS before letting LLMs manage it for me, it is really not this thing you have to 'study' much to get going.

Point still stands that there now is an easy mode switch, and it synergises great with LLMs that many people are already using.
