I don't expect this to be the norm worldwide but it makes a stronger case for me to look into running Linux Mint
>>
Linux doesn't want to protect kids? I wonder why
>>
Still gonna pirate LTSC 2021, Linux is doesn't run many of the programs I want to run
>>
>>109684267
You don't want to use mint, unless you're homosexual.
Gentoo is the only /g/ approved distro. It requires a lot of time and intelligence but once it's installed you're solid for years to come with a bit of troubleshooting here and there
>>
>>109684267
I mean Microsoft is already having age verification in full effect in their game's stores. The time to leave the sinking ship was a long time ago.
>>
>>109684286
>once it's installed you're solid for years
That's the problem
We windows refugees want a familiar experience so an stable mature OS would be too hostile and strange :/
>>
>>109684286
>You don't want to use mint
This you use LMDE instead, it's Mint without ubuntroon
>>
>>109684274
They realized they can't regulate linux like that.

A decade ago my ISP tried telling me I couldn't torrent so I made a torrent box and routed all its traffic through a vpn tunnel. I have never heard another peep about it from them or any subsequent providers.
>>
>>109684267
My guess is Microsoft will wait until they’re doing offering windows 10 security patches
>>
>>109684283
Yep, I use Visual Studio, Excel (no libre/OpenOffice doesn't even come clash) for work, plus games
>>
>>109684286
A desktop OS should just work with an easy quick and convenient seamless setup, including drivers and software. I basically should never see the OS, since I should be spending all my time using software (or games). I shouldn't need to really know much about the OS, it also shouldn't be endorsed by the FSF - that's a massive red flag and is against user freedom, which is the entire point here

Lmao
>>
That's good news. I'm glad to hear it. Thanks OP.
I don't know how they ever thought they were going to be able to regulate it. Maybe they realised that and decided to stop afterwards. All those industrial machines, machines of no one specific user, machines that don't really even have "a user". Before you even get into enforcing it abroad.
>>
>>109684267
If such an OS contains a single piece of nonfree software, would it have to implement age verification?
>>
>>109684286
Don't shill Gentoo. Shill Arch or let the retards wander in the distro desert for 5 generations or whatever it was.
>>
>>109684617
Specific apps could, like chrome for example. But they’re doing this because open source forks are just impossible to control
>>
>>109684335

>>
>>109684267
Wow, a bit of actual good news amidst the bad.

This too:
>In addition, lawmakers inserted a new provision prohibiting anyone from requesting an age signal from an OS provider or app store unless required by law. That closes off potential abuse of the age API that could have led to it being used as a general-purpose data collection channel even when age verification wasn’t required. Platforms and developers also gain a good-faith safe harbor against erroneous signals, protecting them from liability when age-gating signals are inaccurate.

No they can't because of TLS, cloudflare can though and they can tell your ISP.
>>
This is nice and all but doesn't actually do anything except let the California legislature save face. They actually have jurisdiction over Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS because commercial tech is so globally centralized into one city. But they don't have any jurisdiction over any Linux distro.
>>

>>109684267
What if it's AGPL?
>>
>>109684274
1. This shit doesn't actually protect kids, it's purely about control.
2. There's parental control software available for Linux if you really want it.
3. The reason for this exemption is because people have made it quite clear that they will create open source forks that deliberately violate the law, and distribute them. Regulating open source software in any capacity is an exercise in futility. Since it's often distributed at no cost, there's no assets you can seize, no payment you can freeze, and people can send the files over the network from another state that says "no, actually, we're just gonna not do what you want."
>>
>>109685028
>There's parental control software available for Linux if you really want it.
I have been saying this since the beginning. But everyone is ignoring like parental controls never existed. This shit is so fucking artificial and forced into everyone's assholes that is incredible.
>>
>>109685042
The excuse I often hear is that parents are often too stupid/lazy to install them. Except today's parents are millennials and gen X. They know how to use computers. They just don't care. If you grew up seeing porn as a teenager, you don't really care much if your own kids see it.

Which then begs the question: if parents don't want to restrict their kids' access to content on the Internet, why is the government getting involved at all?

>>109684849
So I looked up the language of the law. It doesn't carve out exact license names. It looks like this:

>(2) “Operating system provider” does not mean a person or entity that distributes an operating system or application under license terms that permit a recipient to copy, redistribute, and modify the software.

So even WTFPL is fine.
>>
>>109684849
AGPL is mostly used for server software, don't think operating systems use it.
I also doubt the law will apply to server operating systems, imagine you company wanting to spin up a bunch of VPS's and they're forced to verify each one, it'd be hell and the corporate world won't stand for it.
>>
>>109684267
i wanted to say that this is retarded, but i dont doubt itll appease all the redditor cattle for long enough and let them achieve exactly what they want
>>
>>109684267
How does this affects Android?
>>
>>109685427
Age check requirements remain and remain in the apps and websites anyway. It'd only be custom ROMs you can flash that'd get away with it
>>
>>109684274
Neither do their shitty parents, that's why the government has to diddle them- I mean protect them in their stead.
>>
>>109685427
If Android detects you are underage, the phone enters safety mode and explodes in your hand to cause instant death and avoid exposing the minor to worse damage like porn. If this fails it can also release mustard gas from the charging hole.
>>
>>109684350
You poor man. I hope you find a better job soon, or that what they're putting you through finally gets recognized as a human rights violation.
>>
>>109684274
Because it's fucking pointless due to the nature of open source and couldn't be enforced if done outside the USA e.g. fork it and revert one commit.
>>
>>109684286
>>109684398
These posts have convinced me that Gentoo is the distro for retarded annoying autists. I’m going with a chud-approved distro like Artix or Devuan
>>
>>109684274
They don't die if they see a nipple.
>>
Linux kernel isnt exempt, because it's not free software. The non-free firmware prevents it from being classed as such by law.
>>
>>109684652
That would be fair enough. But then wouldnt it be on the distro not to distribute Chrome at all?
>>
>California does something based for once

>>109685076
>: if parents don't want to restrict their kids' access to content on the Internet, why is the government getting involved at all?
Lots of parents are lazy or spineless. They would love to be able to control what their children do online but don't want to put in the effort or have arguments with their children. So they want to government to do it instead. The parent no longer is the "bad guy" but the control, or at least illusion of it, is there.
>>
>>109685799
Ten steps forward, one step back, is still nine steps forward towards the cliff. There's nothing based about this, it's only mildly less retarded than their earlier bill, none of which should even be under consideration at all.
>>
How does it even work? The OS somehow does this verification and then saves the info in some file or whatever. How does a random web page request the information? Doesn't it also require browser support?
>>
>>109684267
just more confirmation that this whole shit is and never was about the safety of children
>>
>>109684267

Nigga if you're not running Linux after all the shit Microsoft alone has pulled, there's no saving you.
>>

Yes, they already have age verification with IDs in the windows and xbox stores. The time to leave was when windows 10 died.
>>
>>109685802
I want Linux, but without the non-free bits, so I will use the free kernel instead.
Hurd would just be doomed to no SMP and glued together with NetBSD drivers.

How so? I have no age checks now and will have no age checks after it passes. Why would I care what happens on microsoft’s palantir approved cattle ranch?
>>

I want to use my computer to use software not to use and fuck around with the OS and cripple choice availability of what I need or want to run

I guess this will also apply to grapheneOS. (MIT license). That is something. I feel like you might get locked out if you use open source or you might have to jump through extra hoops.
The reality is that users have very little control over ((((modern)))) devices anyway.

>>109687194
Very little. Essentially nothing. I run LMDE on one machine and normal Mint on another and the only thing I ever noticed is I tried to run a program I compiled on the other one, and it didn't work because the Ubuntu base has an older version of libconfig. In other words, the packages aren't identical, but it shouldn't matter for normal daily non-autistic use.
>>
>>109687312
What are you talking about? I get normal battery performance on Linux.

I don't think it's as simple as that.

You can still post on 4chan, you can still post on other imageboards, freely use I2P/Tor, you can access porn, you can torrent and engage in piracy. They want to take it further where you can do none of these things.

"The future is remote attestation all the way from the bootloader to your applications. If you don't run an attested web browser on an attested operating system with an attested secure OS and an attested bootloader on attested hardware, your ISP won't let you connect to the Internet."
>>
The ONLY mention of open-source software is the law is this specific line:

>“Operating system provider” does not mean a person or entity that distributes an operating system or application under license terms that permit a recipient to copy, redistribute, and modify the software.

This is actually important, because it does NOT give an open-source exception to people who distribute programs in general, those are classified as "developers" and not "operating system providers." Does anyone here on /g/ write and distribute programs online somewhere, either through a "app store" or even a standalone website? You aren't an operating system provider, you don't qualify for this exception, you WILL have to include age verification code in your program, or else be fined by California every time a kid downloads your program, regardless of the license you used.
>>
Even if they added age/ID crap in Linux it would likely be in systemd which is entirely optional. Only the "masses" would be impacted and I support their capture.
