Bought this on Ebay for a great deal. It has 3 LTO 6 drives. I'm buying this to back up my anime and movie collection for the coming tech dark age. Any tips for the HPE tape libraries?

LTO-6, you can think of as the kind of tape/size. Unless you are ordering some FC shit, I doubt the machine in your OP is FCoE and even then you'd need a compatible switch I think the cheapest would be like an old 3750x, you bought something unusable.What you probably should have bought is something like picrel and then a card to hook it into your desktop. Then swap out tapes as you backup and fill them. Keep in mind the thing you bought was used in a production environment, no one knows the health of the tapes you're getting. My guess is they are too far gone to sell on their own which is why I guessed 60% health.If you have all the things for it, good that will save you some cash here but without the server software and licensing(make sure they include that shit) it's nothing.

You only have 3 tape drives which might not even be enough to backup anything worth note. >>109692906I don't know about this specific model but most HPE storage equipment you need to have the server software and correct license to install the server side software, I'm not familiar with any HPE storage that hosts all the management and server install software on itself. Nimble use to but HPE bought them and rip. Normally, you get the equipment registered to your HPE account and then it allows you to download the latest fimrware/management/server software. That stuff is needed to attach the virtual drives these things mount to backup data to. These devices often have a basic web UI for configure a few things and run diagnostics, that's it. You might be able to contact support with the S/N and grab it not sure. Hope this isn't a 80 pound brick but who knows, I hope for your sake I am wrong.

You're being trolled.Two things you should know about the library units like that one:- They are prone to mechanical failures in the library, but the drives themselves are usually quite robust- Sometimes, but not always, the internal drives are just shucked SCSI/FC units that are slotted into the unitWhat you should do is investigate if this is the case with your unit. If you can extract one of the three drives and get it running separate from the library, you have given yourself an excellent way to continue to access your tapes if (when) the library itself fails in some way.It's not the end of the world if you can't do this, often when a library mechanically fails you can still open it up, manually insert a tape to a drive, and read/write. But it's worth checking out.

If OP is going to buy used tapes to fill it, I would check them every couple months for sure since they are probably not in the best shape.So yeah unless OP is going to buy the rest of the required parts to make his LTO backups work, he's bought a leg rest. OP backing up anime onto a tape archive is also kinda retarded since it's unlikely any torrents will ever let most of it fall into the abyss any time soon.
