AMD gave us 10 years of AM4 support. You definitely have upgrade options from a desktop PC.
Sadly, socketable CPUs haven't been a thing in laptops for years now. Not even Framework with their "modular laptop" scam is pushing for that.

I know you meant compared to the MacBook though. Reality is laptops have been shit for upgradability for years now.

You can upgrade the RAM if you're lucky enough for it to not be soldered down. Same for the SSD and that's it. Those are your "upgrade" options.

All of the intel's have one slot in T14 gen 1 to 4 and two in gen 5 to 6. AMD has one in gen 1-2, then only soldered in gen 3-4, then two slots in gen 5-6 iirc.
AMD ones are more powerful, but the intel ones are more available and affordable.

4chan is pretty much an industry shilling place at this point. There's no genuine discussion left.
Look at boards that don't have any natural shilling like /fit/. That place is completely and utterly dead at this point. The traffic is a fraction of the glory days in 2010-2013.
>>

Having a $3000 macbook and a cheap Dell, I have to disagree on the dev experience part. MacOS is such a clusterfuck, it's pretty much unusable for me.
I've found only one use for that thing: permanently displaying a website, something a $30 raspberry clone can do.
>>
>>109694971
>This
Pretty much every Apple developer shits all over XCode that's required for development on it. It's so bad they literally have cloud integration in it now to build your app on somebody else's server.
>>
The biggest issue with MacBooks is software compatibility. Some software only works on Windows (I'm not even talking about video games, but industry-specific software in general) I know Wine exists and works quite well, and you can always use a virtual machine, but it's still not ideal

But besides software, objectively speaking, I'm not sure if any Windows laptop is built as well as a MacBook. Maybe the Surface? I was also checking out the new Dell XPS but they're literally more expensive than a MacBook with the same configuration....

I'm really curious about the new RTX laptops from NVIDIA. Maybe they'll be a good rival to MacBooks we'll see. I'm really curious to see how they turn out
>>
>>109695014
>arm windows will be good

MacBooks are only good because of the hardware-software integration symbiosis.
Njudea can't fix Windows regardless if it's x86 or arm.
>>
But Macbooks give you a Hitler moustache in the top of the display. That's your price of entry.
>>
>>109695030
>Njudea can't fix Windows regardless if it's x86 or arm.
They will fix it with Linux. NVIDIA is unironically working on Linux support for their ARM laptops better than any other vendor does, with proper UEFI and ACPI support, etc.

Kind of funny, that the ARM support is such a shitshow that even NVIDIA can do better than everyone else.

Yep. I bought my grandma a new macbook because the alternatives are all complete shit and Windows is a shameful disservice to its users. Even Linux support is extremely spotty on laptops. Thankfully Intel actually tries and helps, for instance nu-webcams now mostly work on Linux. The macbook Linux scene isn't healthy since there are only a handful of devs without salaries working on it , which is a shame, but Apple is evil.

Yes. ACPI shitcode is pretty common in laptops now and other firmware issues, resulting in insane performance issues. You're basically rolling the dice when you buy any non-macbook brand now since they treat platform devs like dogshit and most cattle can't tell the difference because their intrusive kernel antivirus by ClownStrike(r) already causes issues.

Incel really doesn’t get enough credit for their linux / open source / various tooling contributions, they do a lot of good
it’s all the more baffling why they monetize every weird extra feature on their chips to squeeze an extra buck (and in the end nobody but a few hyperscalers buys those anyway), it’s so at odds to their software works
ayymd in contrast gives everybody access to everything that exists on hardware so even dirt poor students end up providing them the occasional labor in optimization and software

Apple is evil for not supporting trannies/indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis distributing malware on apple hardware via linux?
Are you retarded?
Linux has 0 security, normies should never touch it.
>>
>>109695819
Linux literally runs the Internet. If it has 0 security then clearly it's not showing given that the entire Internet and economy hasn't collapsed into a big dark black bottomless black hole yet.

Why sadly? Why the fuck does this board hate Apple so much?
>>
>>109695819
>Apple is evil for not supporting trannies/indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis distributing malware on apple hardware via linux?
Yes. Very much so. Intel has done more for me than Apple has, by a lot. They are objectively better company by moral standards. Hell, I'll argue they do more than AMD, since they at least hire competent people to work on their Linux/FOSS shit.
>>
>>109694804
The only thing this graph shows is that colored pictures look better than grayscale
>>
>>109695819
>Linux has 0 security
idk why you'd say something this retarded. Linux was one of the first majorly used systems to deploy a capability model that was actually used by more than 10 people. Flatpak literally just works and puts sandboxing controls mostly in the user's hands.
why are you so gay?
>>
>>109695850
>why does this technology board hate an evil rent-seeking, spyware, shit company with insane margins so much?
>what do you mean you don't like being locked into niche devkits that are inferior to Windows / Linux alternatives?
Apple shit is good because Apple dumps obscene money into their system and also their rent-seeking is a sort of double-edged sword that saves normgroids from themselves, sort of. We're seeing in real time as fagOS becomes more of a botnetted, adware riddled locked down mess, but unfortunately, it's still better than the alternatives for normies.
>>
>>109695840
>Linux literally runs the Internet

Desktop linux is same as server linux, yep.

what has intel done besides creating useless laptops cpus and desktop cpus that have same TDP as thermonuclear reactors?
>>
>>109695892
sure why not? Most Windows would literally have a panic attack if you handed them a Windows Server without "desktop experience" installed. You can still run a RDP/VNC server on a Linux machine and get your desktop Linux(r) in the cloud(tm).

Apple needs to block linux even more, all Asahi did was create more security vulnerabilities against OSX.
Entire boot loader needs to be locked so indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis/jewishmossadhackers like you can fuck off and keep your malware/hacking in windows/linux scene.

I'm using a ThinkPad with Linux and I can only agree on the powerful CPU, outstanding battery, stunning display and quietness / reliability MacBook Pros have, even if not perfect.
But regarding developer experience? a ThinkPad with Linux is on par if not better, same goes for "future-ready", which is just a buzzword.

As a zoomer, I am confused.
Why do you guys always specifically talk about "thinkpad", is it used interchangeably for any x86/windows/non apple laptop? is it just very popular in the US? or is it a meme of shorts? As you know most laptops in europe are non apple but i don't think i have ever seen a thinkpad in my life. there's obviously endless windows laptop variations from at least half a dozen mainstream manufacturers. is "thinkpad" a boomer thing?
wiki says:
>ThinkPad is a line of business-oriented laptop and tablet computers produced since 1992. It was originally designed, created and manufactured by the American International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation. IBM sold its PC business to the Chinese company Lenovo in 2005; since 2007, all ThinkPad models have been manufactured by Lenovo.[5]

spoonfeed me.
>>
>>109694810
only retards who are learning to code use visual studio, print helloworld retard

all normal people use IDE's
>>
>>109696365
no, when you say "thinkpad" you specifically mean Lenovo's ThinkPad brand
ThinkPad is a legendary brand of *business* laptops, meaning that mostly these devices are bought by big companies, corporations that employ tens of thousands of people and nowadays most of that workforce needs a laptop. So for the last 25 years they were buying premium, well built laptops, that are also much more expensive than the shit you see in European stores. The upside is, they can take the stresses of being used by your average office wagie and probably won't die for many years. ThinkPad is one of the lines of such products, but there are others, such as Dell's Latitude, or HP used to have an EliteBook line. You don't see these in stores because the retail market for these is relatively small.

Now once a corporate laptop like this reaches its end of life (a big company doesn't use these to death - it's enough if they reliably last 4-5 years) the company dumps them into the market for pennies. This is how ThinkPads first made their way into the greasy hands of impoverished 4channers when, especially midway through last decade, Lenovo's ThinkPad x200 started hitting the street, and you could get these for pennies, getting a legendarily rugged, capable and extensible laptop. The x200 was so good it managed to hype up the ThinkPad brand on 4chan even more (Though IBM ThinkPads were already legendary the decade before that) and many people are running these devices to this very day. Along the way, Lenovo managed a couple other good models, such as notably the T410 which is still quite popular despite being made in like 2018.

tl;dr these laptops are good, better than consumer tier shit available in stores and last much longer
>>
>>109694804
If you can afford to spend 3 to 4 thousand fucking dollars, a modern macbook is unmatched. Otherwise, thinkpads are fine.
>>
>>109696425
I have an M1 macbook air and a 2025 ThinkPad X13

The macbook is better in every way, starting with build quality, CPU is also much better in the macbook and macOS is rock stable on it. I only got the X13 because I really need linux for some things but modern arm macbooks are better in every way and probably cost the same as thinkpads nowadays

i still prefer the thinkpad keyboard but my m4 pro macbook will be in production for many years i think. other than dust its the same as the unboxing. plus the centered extremely responsive trackpad never fucks up.

who is competing with the macbook trackpad these days? it was perfect 15 years ago and remained perfect through major changes. someone must be because it's 90% of most users interaction with a pc
>>
>>109694804
this is unironically true. I hate my work shitpad. I can't even use it on my lap without it heating up. Its market cost in $2000 but has a terrible mic and terrible speakers. Genuinely wish they gave us macbook pros instead. Only someone who has never done real work with a thinkpad would think a thinkpad is better. My m1 macbook air mogs my work thinkpad into oblivion.

The only pro about the thinkpad is that, the window management is better compared to a mac but that's really a windows thing not a thinkpad specific thing

This is why im grinding to switch to a company that actually respects their employees and gives them thinkpads.
