You should be doing atleast every other wash because when it fully clogs the humidity isn't able to escape, the same port for the lint catcher is used as a middle point for a vacuum, if it's clogged the lint won't move, it'll bunch up into a solid tube of cotton, that thing going to your wall should be checked, and cleaned because dry cotton ignites faster than dry wood.
