Not really. Dragon player that comes installed with it can't play any video even after installing the h264 codecs. You need to download something like mpcqt or mpv to work. It's weird as fuck and I'm not even talking about using flatpaks. Kubuntu is more outdated but everything just works.

The base distro thing only makes sense in limited contexts. For instance, RHEL, CentOS, Alma, and Rocky are, ultimately, derived from work done on Fedora. Yet, the vast majority of people will choose to run one of those four on a public-facing server, as opposed to using Fedora (for good reason).

Another example is Ubuntu. Yes, I still run Debian on some public-facing servers, but with access to multiple free Ubuntu Pro licenses, I often choose an Ubuntu LTS instead, because with ESM coverage, I don't even have to think about new releases on those boxes more than once every 15 years, which is an enormous relief in a lot of scenarios.

No. rhel/alma/rocky exists, there are 0 situation where using ubuntu for long-term support is better than using rhel or its clones.

It's not paywalled for me and many other people. Before I got comfy with RPM packaging, I was an Ubuntu package jannie. I currently have 5 servers running Ubuntu with ESM enabled, and access to a few dozen more pro licenses, which I will use, whether you like it or not. I will also happily continue using Alma, Debian, and Mageia on other servers, for so long as those distros exist.
