I'm trying to finally upgrade my 15-year-old IPS Dell UltraSharp 1080p monitor for a 2K or 4K one and TFT Central is still recommending VA panels all over.
What the fuck happened to OLED monitors being the future?
Do they still burn themselves?
What's the way to go with monitors in 2026?
Why are they all over 300 Hz?
There is no GPU able to run modern games at 360 fps.

300 frames at 4k ? No...
300 fake frames at fake 4k... Now that's a whole different story.
>>
>>109702813
If you need OLED go with ASUS ROG.
If you need IPS go with ASUS ProArt or BenQ.
Anything past 144Hz is a meme and you need a 5090 regardless of going past 60 FPS in modern games.
Choices are simple.
>>
>>109702813
>Do they still burn themselves?
yes
>What's the way to go with monitors in 2026?
4k OLED or mini LED. OLED has perfect contrast and instant pixel response time, with the crippling issue of burn-in. Mini LED has far better large-area brightness, with the main issue being haloing. If you don't care about burn-in, you can probably just go with OLED, though you should look into some of their other common issues before you decide, like grey banding / unevenness and VRR flicker.

If motion quality is of utmost importance to you, you should look at a Pulsar screen instead. These will have the best motion representation but I believe they don't even support HDR at all, so you're giving up a lot of image quality in other areas. There isn't a screen on the market which does everything right, with no serious compromises. Pick your poison.

>Why are they all over 300 Hz?
>There is no GPU able to run modern games at 360 fps.
esports shit, or maybe this is where you make use of the epin frame generation features.

lets be real, competitive games where these frames matter can get pretty high on top hw, 9850x3d and rtx5090 will get you there on 1080 and 1440
and on non competitive upscaling res to 4k or fps x2 isnt that bad, for some lag and occasional artifacts you get higher motion clarity
that said, buying non oled in 2026 is just not optimal, I dont want to get into flamewars, so just go to electronics shop and see for yourself, it is on different level compared to va or ips however many backlight leds they have
oleds still do burn, it is not that bad /g/ makes it, but no way it is going to last 15y, not that I think any monitor made today is going to last 15y, falds are going to die much sooner that oleds according to tests
oh btw 4k is much better than 1440 for general use
>>
>>109703146
That is 2k retard.
1k = 1080p
2k = 1440p

>OLED has perfect contrast
not even
they'd have perfect contrast if there wasn't any ambient light (and you should have bias light), and in a perfectly black and non reflective room (which you shouldn't: it should be mid-grey, if you care for accuracy)
don't believe the fuck high numbers crooks and retards pull out: they measure in the dark with all pixels shut off for the dark part, which isn't how it should be done (should be done with a standardized checkerboard pattern that makes those numbers plummet)
OLED has better contrast, but not anywhere as high as claimed, and in practice, not even impressive for properly set up monitors (luminosity down a lot), in a proper setting (proper bias lighting, against a grey wall)

truly, OLED are the apple of monitor tech
if that's what you have and paid for it with your own money, you've only proven you're a clueless pseud

They used to reference monitors by their vertical pixels (720p, 900p, 1080p, 1440p) but when they went to 4K marketers decided to be faggots about it and start using the horizontal pixels (4K = 3840 x 2160).

So now there are those using vertical pixel naming (1080p, 1440p) and 4K/8K.

4K is 4x1080p / 8x720p
2K is 4x720p
It's also why if you watch any media, watching on a 4K screen is better for interpolation of pixels.

I've heard 2560 x 1440 also called 2.5K.
5120 x 2160 is 5K2K.

It's dumb marketing shit.

2k and 4k are some DCI standards or some such, from the professional cinema side of the industry. Their actual resolutions are 2048x1080 (so, wider 1080p) and 4096x2160 (so, wider 2160p).

Because 3840x2160 is close to 4096x2160, the former started being called "4k" as well despite not actually matching the standard. 2560x1440 is not close to 2k at all, 2k is very close to consumer 1080p in reality. People started calling 2560x1440 "2k" out of sheer ignorance / retardation, despite 2560x1440 actually being far higher resolution than 2k.
>>
4k is retarded because you have to use fracitonal scaling... with a 5k screen you'll use a 1440p res scaled 200% which is good....

better yet, just get a regular 1440p monitor with MiniLED so you dont have to deal with OLED burn in
>>
>>109702813
How big is the difference between 60hz and 160hz? Would I feel the difference? I've only used cheap 1080p 60hz monitors because I thought it's all a meme.

But recently I went to a friend and saw his monitor while he was playing a specific game I play too. And his game was really smooth, even tho my PC is leagues above his own. Is the monitor the problem?
>>
>>109707545
definitely a huge difference, but around the max useful refresh rate (don't go higher)
also, at constant resolution, your GPU will have to compute 2.67 times more screens in the same time, so it'll tax it accordingly
>>
>>109707479
Just get a 4k screen you can run at 100% scaling. The only people who like 5k screens are macfags who love gobbling $1600 60Hz display nuts.

Stop overthinking it and just get the most expensive OLED you can afford. When the screen starts to burn-in that means you've had it for long enough and it's time you bought a new one.

Burn-in is a helpful feature for making sure you're always up-to-date with the latest monitor tech available.

Fractional scaling has not been an issue since forever, at least not on Windows or on Linux with KDE, which are the desktop OS' I use. Pretty damn sure it worked fine as far back as Windows 7 at the very least and I don't even know how fucking long on KDE, but a long ass time for sure. I don't know if it's broken on Mac and all the retards complaining are Macfags or what, but if you think it's a problem on PC then you must be stuck in the mid 2000s or some shit.

>>
>>109706494
>not even
You're right, they don't have literally infinite static contrast (the checkerboard test you mention), but OLED screens can still completely shut off individual pixels and as such emit no light on a per-pixel level. Practically speaking, I don't know how much better contrast can get beyond this point. In the real world there will obviously be light bouncing back into the screen from the environment, even if it is light from the monitor itself being reflected back. So what can you even do, make the color of the turned off screen an even deeper black? That's about all there is to it and I don't think it would make a major difference, I mean OLED screens are pretty dark, they're not like CRTs which were very obviously grey and suffered heavily in lit environments.
>>
>>109708886
Don't worry about meatheaded OLED seether anon, he's a bit of a fucking spastic (you'd think OLED killed his parents or something by the way he carries on in monitor technology threads). They have reached the point where they have better contrast then our eyes can handle
Test it yourself, bring up a half black half white test pattern
then cover your eye slightly to hide only the white part, and the black will be noticably darker
We have reached the human limit, a little white will always bleed from white to black in our eyes because they dont have perfect contrast
>>
This type of question is impossible to answer without knowing op's specific usecase. That's why you'll only find favorite sports club cope answers itt.
It's pretty simple. For esports or home office ips/tn is the way to go. Best input latency and less straining for your eyes. Bad black levels/blooming but irrelevant for your usecase.
For multimedia you have to choose between the pros and cons of either mini led VA or oled.
I think oled is perfectly fine for tv's but not for desktop because you'd have to practically babysit it all day to reduce chances of burn-in.
Mini LED downsides are some amount of ghosting/ black smearing but it can be hardly noticeable depending on the panel quality (I've got one and it never bothers me). It can also get suuuuper bright and generally just looks great on movies and vidya, with good enough contrast to not make you wanna buy oled.
And yes the hundreds of hertz thing is a meme. I've got mine set to 160hz which is the maximum with 10 bit color on my monitor, and picture quality is more important to me than speed so I see no point in turning it up. Anything beyond that is practically useless for most people.

I need some advice since I don't know a lot about monitors.

Currently, the AOC q27g3xmn is available for 230€ which is pretty good compared to when I wanted to buy it last year.

1. Should I wait for something like Black Friday? To see if it can go even lower?

2. Should I wait for 2027? I think some Anson said that the next monitor gen will be more powerful and the current monitor prices drop

3. Is the AOC q27g3xmn the best at this price range?

I don't give a shit about competitive games, I just want my normal games to look good. My price range is 150-250€ max and since my gpu is an rtx 5070ti, I prefer keeping it at 1440p

>>109708886
>I don't know how much better contrast can get beyond this point
that's the thing: you can't get better contrast long, long before this point
on a properly set up monitor, contrast depends from the room, not from the monitor: that's the very thing in question
properly set up (low light intensity, only bias light in the room, in front of a neutral wall), LCD monitors have already offered as much contrast as you're gonna need for a long ass time already (that's not the proper bias light only feature, but it very much is one: by contrast, funnily enough, it makes the blacks appear blacker)
claiming contrast gains on OLED just proves you're setting up screen like a trisomic monkey; just proves you're a retarded apple tier pseud
>OLED screens are pretty dark, they're not like CRTs which were very obviously grey and suffered heavily in lit environments
bullshit as well: CRTs were not obviously grey, and even less so with bias lighting
they suffered from reflections when in front of a light source, obviously, due to the glass (hence why they were set up with hoods, which are still a thing, by the way), but that's it (and that's why they were still most used as critical monitors in video studios till the early 10's: and they lost due to resolution and size, certainly not black quality)
>>
>>109708886
they need to start making darkbulbs and darkpixels that can't bounce ambient light off themselves

There just is no going back from OLED picture quality.

>>109706735

Your monitor is drawing 50% of the screen in each of the 120hz frames. Simulating a slightly motion sharper 60Hz display.

I have a 1440p monitor that I use at 100% scaling.
I would like to upgrade to something better while using integer scaling (200% scale) to avoid scaling problems, but 4K would not allow me to keep the same size.
The 200% of 1440p would be a 5K monitor, but there seem to be very few high-refresh rate 5K monitors.
>>
>>109709827
>LCD monitors have already offered as much contrast as you're gonna need for a long ass time already
This isn't true unless you're talking about a very brightly lit room, such as by natural sunlight coming in through large windows. In the conditions you specify you will see a very obvious difference between an LCD screen with a static backlight and one with local dimming for example. OLED will clearly look different as well.
>CRTs were not obviously grey, and even less so with bias lighting
I have 3 with me in the room right now, they are grey. You have to be utterly delusional to deny this. They're still grey at night with nothing but soft mood lighting turned on as well, because their screens are nowhere close to black, unlike LCDs and OLEDs.

>>109710637
You don't need integer scaling.
>>
>>109710704
>This isn't true unless you're talking about a very brightly lit room, such as by natural sunlight coming in through large windows
no, it's the opposite
in a dark room, with proper bias light, and properly set up monitors, LCD are already adequate in contrast: there is a difference, but certainly not light and day, and even less so one justifying buying burnable shit
>I have 3 with me in the room right now, they are grey
that you have 3 shit, and poorly set up CRTs tells more about you than anything
same as defending OLED for monitors, in the name of contrast: you obviously set up your monitors far too high in brightness, with far too low bias lighting, or even other light sources in the room
if you were setting those up properly, you wouldn't see the point of buying burnable shit
>>
>>109710704
>You don't need integer scaling.

You would be surprised at how hard it is for 2D graphics libraries to render in non-integer scale values.

no, it isn't when both are properly set up
lower monitor brightness makes the blacks darker (and almost everyone uses far too much brightness: there are norms about that, really: and they were created for much better equipment than most will ever know exists)
and bias lighting ensures your pupils don't widen so much that blacks appear so grey (there are norms about that too)
if you use both properly, claiming LCD blacks can't be black enough is useless and delusional nitpicking

as expected, you're a retard, not even knowing how to use his hardware, lmao

What size 1440p?
You should look for something that will give you the same PPI.
If you have a 27" 1440p monitor, you have a 109 PPI.
The equivalent 4k monitor will be a 40" screen with 110 ppi at 100% scaling.

If you're fine with a bit higher, I use a 4k 32" screen with 132 ppi and keep it at 100% scaling. I only have to change the scale of certain websites and sometimes my IDE but those are usually vector graphics and can handle the scaling without blurring.

EIZO the last holdout for LCD tech because of their use in pro work has given in and accepted that OLED just destroys every other tech.
