ITT we come up with the next gen social media and I code it. Should I make a new socmed where the user builds his own algorithm?Algos are known for purposely brainwashing people and creating political polarization so many dont like them. People dont like the idea that they cant see the code, they don't know what it does. What if the user could build a very simple algo by selecting the sorting methods he likes such as>sort by date only>sort by 50% view count, 50% date>sort by content in the subreddits you follow, no outside content>sort by relevance to where you liveor something like thatDo you think this is pointless crap or a feature you would like to sea
A /g/ thread will either get 200 replies or 0
>>109709040>lust provoking image
>>109709361i did notice this threadbut i dont work with webshit or use social mediaplus: the op sounds like a layer on top of existing platformsand impossible to reliably monetizeand if you demand subscriptions the network is doabecause its the users that make the network engaging, interestingbusiness-wise probably giving users more freedom in hosting content would be a playespecially with cheap compute after the ai bubble is done popping
The videogame industry has completely changed. Gen z players are abandoning triple A games and shifted to indie games. When is the same gonna happen to social media? Everyone uses the same 3-5 corporate megasites.Do you think that one day people will just get sick of this shit and create their own unique communities that are not funded by data theft but maybe the users run it themselves or something?
>>109709383Yeah Mitama is hot as fuck only a fool would disagree
>>109709396selfhosting thenmaybe the play is to make self hosting trivialand then all the infra you need to make it happen is a page where you index people's instancesthis sounds like something that could be made to happen of donations only
>>109709415*off
>>109709415This reminded me of something. I'm currently hosting my own social media platform on my physical server machine.Whenever I tell people about this they dont understand what I mean.Just a week ago a woman asked me about it. She just asked me>yeah but what site is your social media on? Like Insta, Tiktok?I tried to explain to her that I dont have a profile on an existing social media site, I run my OWN social media site. She just couldn't get it.Back in 2002 everyone had their own websiteNow instead of websites people have a profile on an existing website
>>109709040- Every community { physical and/or logical } is required to create their own { chan, forum, E2EE chat and file sharing servers, SFTP servers }- Each community must ignore all laws that were not written by their community and block any entities outside of their community.
actuallyi like the sound of self hostingstep a) figure out a distro, config to have a robust instance ready to gostep b) containerize it and let it be dependent on docker. thats offloading the "making it actually happen" to other peopleand thats client-side. maybe wire wordpress into it; nginx etcwhatever then use an aging machine to run a server where you only publish instance names as links for the actual ipsand make everything open sourceand boom. shadow internetnot only for soc media, but for absolutely whateverpromote the model, and people are gonna run with the ideayoull see different networks, different topologies, different formulas appear etc

>>109709519>Cheap compute sold to the masses could be the way.i think this is the only viable solutionliquidation means server blades getting sold for 1/100 of their initial value given how much of the stuff theyve producedi think the only viable solution is to sell the computebetter crash the market for compute than to crash the market for hardwareyou dont devaluate everyone's assets- which would mean crashing nvidia.the fragility of debt based economics on display.
make the lo/g/o first or your project will never take off
>>109709567have the soapbox all to yourselfi have only a vague understanding of web-related thingsat the level of rumor, i could say.
I'm currently building a low tech social media site that runs on any hardware no matter how oldNobody needs it in 2026, but maybe one day they will, as nobody will have the processing power

>>109709396Network effect: The value of the product increases with the amount of users.Social media works mainly because it has many users. That's why every newish successful social media site started with heavy investment in growth to reach an adequate user base. Also the same reason basically none of the 4chan clones thrives. For games:>single player = no major network effect: you can enjoy vanilla stardew valley without problems>multiplayer games = yes but there's earlier saturationWhat do I mean? If you have a 3v3 multiplayer game you probably want so many users that everyone can get a match in less than 1 minute and you're pretty fine. For social media you need>lots more users or a more focused niche: even if you have 10k users in total given the diverse interests you don't have a lot of content which people want to consume (see lurker theory). Better, you start with a focused niche, that means you need less users but those within a special segment>a qualitative different experience: also one of the reasons most 4chan or reddit clones fail. There's not much different between the clones and the original. TikTok was different at the time, Instagram was different at the time, Facebook was different at the time. So yeah, is it possible to create new alternatives to the big platforms: yes but you'll need a qualitative different experience coupled with an active user base
>>109710006>Network effect: The value of the product increases with the amount of users.>Social media works mainly because it has many users.Consider this: people are simply all wrong about more users being better. They think they WANT to be around 1 billion users, but in reality they'd have an easier time bonding with people and making real friends if the userbase was smaller and more manageable. For instance dating apps always turn into "people hopping" because you know there's an infinite selection. In the end you can't focus on anything but the hopping itself.Am I seriously the only person in the world who has realized this
>>109710006>even if you have 10k users in total given the diverse interests you don't have a lot of content which people want to consume/g/ has like 500 people and this is your favorite form of social media.
>>109710144>diverse interest/g/ is already a subsegment not the total amount of users. 4chan has currently around 230k users. A user in 4chan stats is defined as somebody who has an active post. That means if we are super conservative that there are at least 2 million visitors on 4chan, given stats about people posting rates from other websites. 4chan itself and some others sources say 20m visitors each month. If we scale that down to 10k total visitors (to keep the lingo the same, although I would call them users) that would bring /g/ to about 40 posts a day. That is about as much as /3/ which is basically dead.If we take the 2m to 20m visitors and say that /g/ posting rate is about the same as other boards than /g/ produces about 1.5% of all posts, which would mean that there are around 30k to 300k visitors on /g/>>109710140Correct, see what I wrote about "saturation". There's an S-curve effect. At some point each additional users increases the value just by a tiny bit. I think it's fair to argue that certain communities, and I think we all have seen that, lose value as a certain point because rent seekers take over (powerhungry mods, etc.) I don't know if people want 1 billion users, companies or better the financiers want it because if you have invested $400m in ads you want that money back. I agree that bonding is easier with a smaller user base. I think that's why IRC channels and forums and now Discord servers work well because you aren't competing for attention against millions of other users. Dating apps are a great example both from the company's and user's interests. Their goals don't align. In a sense as a dating app you want people constantly looking for the next date never settling. A big amount of potential dates looks appealing to the user but gives them choice overload.I don't know if there are studies on it but I believe there's a good chance that the average person would be better off only having a limited choice of potential spouses

>>109709040off the top of my head>a giant voice chat where speaker is selected at random from all the people in the room and has 5 minutes to talk before it switches to next random person>call it Oasis>something like 4chan style imageboard but made with mobile posting in mind, native app on iphone and android, super smooth round interface, total anonymity still>available ONLY on phones, no pc posters>call it Anonly>SoundCloud 2>it's like SoundCloud but without premium bullshit, no DMCA takedowns, aislop banned, 100x better ui that looks more like Spotify>would be like a niche alternative music platform only for amateur-ish music where artists could drop unfinished projects and ideas with no pressure from labels>gamified chat platform>you're put in a room with random 10 people and you have to talk, get to know each other and after some time the game starts>if you win, you get to exchange info, if you lose you'll never see each other again>call it DeathChatI really liked the concept behind https://www.youraislopbores.me but it didn't live up to its full potential because servers keep fucking up

Truth of the matter is that all social media alternatives eventually end up dying because there's no one, or when people do move it's only the lurkers, never the creatives who need to have people to show their stuff to. And they will only find those people on the already existing platforms due to network effect>le discussis the most inorganic shit you can imagine
