C is definitely a high-level language. ASM was once considered high-level too.However, I don't get the point about features like speculative execution being "added to let C programmers continue to believe they were programming in a low-level language." That seems like a disconnected thought, and it's wrong. Spectre, Meltdown, and other vulns caused by branch prediction side effects has nothing to do with a language. It's hardware people hiding abstractions from software people.
