Still don't understand the crybabying about this, isn't the core functionality, is an uninteresting DLL that reimplements a deprecated API this program doesn't want to move from (like everything Windows) so Wine can use it instead of its default DLLs. Isn't a novel or notheworthy thing. Isn't even legal to try a proper port because Direct2D is closed source, you only have API calls and some headers to work with.

that's actually really interesting.

theoretically if it actually is a clean-room reverse engineer, and not the AI disassembling d2d1.dll secretly, then both WINE and ReactOS could potentially benefit greatly from this as well?

>>
>>109715678
Nothing made with Claude can be "clean-room" if it's possible what you're trying to reverse engineer was in the training data, and there's no way to examine the training data. It's like trying to launder The New York Times copyright on its articles by asking Claude to repeat them back verbatim.
>>
Does it work on MacOS yet? He can slopcode it, I don't care if it works

>>109715761
no, it's more like trying to pirate a NYT article by having Claude read the headline and then telling it to write the article.

it's possible to clean-room reverse engineer for as long as you can prevent the LLM from spitting back any D2D code verbatim.

it'd be very hard to prove otherwise given the D2D source has never been leaked (it did not exist during XP times so its not in that leak), so they could not have used it for training.

Those largely didn't exist back in the day, or were so bad you wouldn't want to use them anyway
Now the only good choices are qt (pay for gui? lol lmao) and electron (every poorfag cries about how their 4gb ram shitbox can't deal with the slight resource overhead)
>>
>>109716195
discounting the ram usage, electron is also slow as all fuck
>>
>>109716204
>electron is also slow as all fuck
Which is irrelevant since you can bully electron with modern hardware. I don't really care how a laptop from 2018 runs it since I don't own any old shit.
If you need to you can also drop down into more optimized languages when needed. Something like vs code is fast as fuck and deals with ~100 MB text files without an issue which brings the average "native" text / code editor to its knees.
But then, people moaning about electron performance probably don't even know what flamegraph is, much less ever used it to try and figure out the performance bottlenecks.

If AI companies can bend the law to do illegal stealing, then users should be able to do the same. Just steal all the proprietary code to improve Wine and ReactOS.

It was AI that did it, YOU never looked at the proprietary code therefore you didn't steal it! :^)

Paint.net is probably the only noteworthy program that uses Direct2D. Wine will not be interested in adding 180k lines of fully vibecoded slop in order to support one program. I don't think he plans to release the source anyway, just the DLL.
>>
>>109713517
why does a wrapper over direct2D require 180,000 lines? I genuinely don’t get it. why is this simple, not feature rich paint program 700k? it sounds like the entire project is a mess
>>
>>109713517
Realistically wouldn't it be simpler, less risky and less likely to trigger schizos to just move the program off from Direct2D? In that case he could have reviewed the AI generated code, or just not disclose that it was AI generated at all.
>>
>>109716448
oh, nevermind, “reverse engineered direct2d” lmao why?? I skimmed and just assumed that the developer was sane and wrapped his draw calls like a normal person, but it sounds like rather than do that he would have an AI reverse engineer and reimplement the entire underlying api. what the fuck are we doing, that is an off the charts level of niggerliciousness to cover up poor design decisions and poor project planning

20 years? bro probably started it when he was 14 years old and never refactored in his life if he still has a hard coded direct2d dependency

The correct answer is "no".
You don't need to explain to them that it's thousands of LOC to support a shitty IoT lightbulb OS with 1% marketshare, spread across dozens of basically-incompatible distros, used exclusively by poorshits and third-worlders who won't pay for your project anyway - they're too stupid to understand.
You instead reply as if a small child asks to drive the car - with "no".

every single modern native windows UI (WinUI) since win10 uses d2d to render, as well as all of Microsoft Office.

probably a bunch of 2d games too and maybe some 3d games that use 2d rendering somewhere.

I am always returning to GIMP like a battered housewife anyways.
Hopefully GIMP will be good now. Hopefully it will. I don't want to pirate adobe products as much as adobe deserves it.
But maybe I'll try Affinity Photo instead.

Anyways I don't care for artists getting mad at AI slop. They had their chance to shut down the modern art junk like splattering paint on a canvas and getting millions or taping a banana to a wall or a literal pile of trash.
They didn't. And now they decide that AI is suddenly the death knell for artists.

Second this. This is how it should be.
AI models under the hood are just weights and biases, which encode matrixes and vectors, which originally were encoding all sorts of content downloaded from the web.
So basically they pirated the entire Internet and trying to sell it on a meter.

Avoid generic slop and use AI to aquire the good stuff, use the hole in the law that was created for AI, for your own sake.

I don't know if it should've been or not. But I do know that rules cannot be patented or copyrighted. Software is a set of instructions that computers follow. Basically those are rules. IP law was never supposed to govern those.

Probably someone like Bill Gates had a different idea at a time. Enforced those. Only to immediately break it and steal from others. And later for Microslop to buy Github and fund OpenAI, which would basically steal the entire Internet, along with all the code in the world. This fucking timeline...

Damn, that's kinda sad.
He seems proud of it and all, even the way he's so resolute that it would never have happened, just discounting all the other paths that were available to him.
Sad that we let delusions get to this stage but it's such a large part of our society, required to stop people from Ted'ing out. Reinforcement is something that I used to think was harmless, years go by and nah, it's not. People allergic to friction engage in this strange practice, just so long as they are never asked to reflect or question. Building upon the idea of success and good enough.

What's more disturbing is that all these years on and it only seems to have gotten worse since the days of Ludwig Wittgenstein and a vague concept of ASI isn't going to deliver us a world in which this problem goes away without the eradication of human society.
There's a rotten nihilism to things like this being aired in public. I can only hope for a small mercy to put an end to this person's suffering. Let their vessel be a feast for the bugs.

It's his software, paint.net isn't open source. And honestly, that's the biggest problem here. 170k lines of AI generated code that can never and will never be actually looked at by any human.
>>
>>109717127
because the code made by the ai isn't at the point (and unlikely will ever be), where you can blindly take the output and expect it to work without issues (bloat, bugs, misbehaviors, hallucinations etc). the slop it produces is also makes it hard to extend and build further upon, so eventually, past certain point, the whole shit collapses from the structural incomprehension. so you have to babysit the agents, and understand the code it produces. and then have a pass to review it. and then regularly clean up produced by it goo-goo gagas, and further adjust the instructions.

in linux's codebase, people follow certain standards in this regard, so the final merged output to the codebase is not blindly slopped. but in the case of pain.net it's pure 200k on random slop, that you have to praise the god, that it won't randomly detonate your computer or inject a malware. 200k lines of code is a lot. really fucking a lot. and all of it is unreviewed slop.
