An attacker places or compromises any node between endpoints, downgrades your "strong" RSA to weaker ones, cracks the encryption, and becomes clear text MitM for what both ends think is secure. This is the most common exploit used by govs and feds for anything that allows "reverse capabilities" or "legacy support" in regards to encryption. RDP is another common one they do this. Police and feds literally have these boxes they set up around protests that act like cell towers, and will downgrade connecting phones encryptions to mass surveil.
