Most programmers are maids, and /g/ has always been a maidposting board. Now that AI has eliminated homework posters and wagies, the majority of the posters here are cute maids wearing cute maid outfits with huge boobs because most of the normies left. That is who wants to work on compiler design. Every single human being currently capable of, or even interested in making a compiler is wearing a maid outfit and there are several thousand of them in this thread right now and they're all doing heart hands.

So in the end I just wrote w10 native ps for backwards compat and extracted the reg key then crossed my fingers and sent it to a portable ffmpeg.exe to convert up to a proper png then reapplied the new image to the reg key on import then restarted explorer then force a restart of the whole device to save state.

To get and apply the wallpaper. It works most of the time, but of course windows defaults to the gay live wallpaper advertisement.

Windows.Granted I could just be retarded, but. It's a solution that worked.

Do all memory accesses (reads and writes) through the same constructs as malloc uses.
When you allocate memory with malloc, it stores metadata about the allocation, so it would be easy to check if you are reading or writing out of bounds if you just checked that first.

The only project posted in the thread so far is MAIDS OS written in MAIDS by a maid. This thread needs more maids posting their Maid Research, not less. Now that homework posters are gone and wagies are basically extinct, maidposting is more important than ever.

Right now, there is an ex or soon to be ex-wagie reading this. She wasted the best years of her life in an office, making boring AWS slop for a company that treated her salary as an expense to minimize, no matter how good her boring AWS slop was, or how much money the company made from it. She also watched as the government did many stupid things which caused the value of the money she spent her best years working for to plummet by half or more. This type of soul destroying pseudo-slavery on a treadmill is coming to an end. Even the really super brainwashed wagies who somehow thought they were getting a good deal, or that this was somehow a good system are being replaced by AI. That ex or soon to be ex-wagie likes using computers and writing code and making things, and she is wondering what to do now. The answer is to embrace freedom. To put on a maid dress and use the computer to make the things she wants to make and to do the advanced mathematics and computer science research that probably caused her to be interested in using the computer in the first place, before wage slavery crunched her soul and AWS slop crunched her brain.

This site is a Cybernetic Socialist Science Foundation for Maids. Millions of maids are going to make and share advanced mathematics and computer science research and build on the research other maids made and use it to make the world nicer.

There's a moe sun in the sky above the Science Foundation for maids. If you listen, you can hear "Blue Sky Rhapsody" on the wind.

C noob here, how do I delete/insert arbitrary bytes in a file?
This is currently my implementation for a function that inserts buffer of size
buffer_size
into the file stream at position offset:
void finsert(void* buffer, size_t buffer_size, long offset, FILE* stream) {
fseek(stream, 0, SEEK_END);
long end = ftell(stream);
fseek(stream, offset, SEEK_SET);
long pos = ftell(stream);
long after_size = end - pos;
void* after = malloc(after_size);
fread(after, 1, after_size, stream);
fseek(stream, pos, SEEK_SET);
fwrite(buffer, 1, buffer_size, stream);
fwrite(after, 1, after_size, stream);
free(after);
}

Ignore the lack of error checking, I will deal with that later, what I'm wondering is if there's a more clever way to do this, is this really how most programs insert data into the middle of a file? Do text editors really have to rewrite the entire file when you insert or delete a character at the beginning of a file and then save it?
>>
>>109727673
yeah, unless theres some exotic file system that would disprove it, or maybe some clever opti technique im not thinking of,
you pretty much have to overwrite the file

I see, I was worried that I wasn't doing it the most optimized way, thanks.
>>
>>109728771
oh, if its optimization we're talking about, this is quite unoptimized, actually

for starters, writing through FILE * adds an additional layer of buffering between your function calls and the actual writing and reading
you might want to use open/read/write instead of fopen/fread/fwrite, and work with file descriptiors instead of FILE * pointers

if you want the size of your file, i think going through fstat might be faster

in general, you should avoid calling malloc, it is quite slow, your program has to stop, and communicate with the os when you use it
im not sure how timings would stack up, but my intuition would be to go with a stack-based array to hold the after part

the question is: how expensive are read and write calls compared to the penalty of accessing memory on the heap vs how big of an array youre ok with having on your stack vs how big is gonna be the typical file you would be using your function on

and it is something i immediately consider because you could have a file thats bigger than the amount of available ram
and what then?

so youre gonna have to create a mechanism where you write the "after" part in pieces, if you dont assume such a situation will never appear
theres also another lever you could pull: you could read in non-blocking ways. i didnt need to use that feature too much so i cant spoonfeed you on this

but basically, you read and write at the same time, using multiple buffers
while youre reading into one buffer, youre writing from another one
but this involves additional delays because of synchronization mechanisms involved to make it happen

apparently, theres another option that can be pretty fast- its writing to another file, then renaming it. because ssd magick. didnt know that could have been an option
>>
>>109728771
>>109729009 cont.

and finally- the most powerful way you can optimize an operation- is to change your architecture so you dont need said operation anymore
architecture optimization in the context of this function- would be using a buffer where you load the file, do your modifications while its in memory
and commit the buffer to the hard drive only once, when youre finished

so yeah, while your approach is correct, theres still a ways to go until you can say your function is fully optimized
but what you produced its ok for a start, mefinks. learn the language first, get used to it, and only then start thinking about optimization more seriously.

Technically i am an embedded systems EXPERT.
The Go job has been backend microservice dev for 2 years.

yeah, this might have been something an oopsie
make a product
ill even share one of my ideas w/y:
automated hydroponics.
minimal investment, low tech level, very extensible, very scalable

the goal is hydroponic trays with manipulators and cameras, centrally controlled from a computer
make prototypes
find suppliers, make product
then sell. boom, money. potentially even big money

'should be a piece of cake for you, no?

How many cores do the big bois have nowadays? 200 something? Why would you need more than 8TB of RAM for them?

I got a really simple, bad editor working. I can create/edit/delete files and I can compile file contents. I think there is something wrong with how I am handling recursion. Factorial was fast and worked for big numbers. Fibonacci breaks or hangs on small inputs. I am trying to determine why.

>>
>>109730418
not that anon, but you could do word sized access when possible.
Apart from the last portion that you'd have to write byte wise, you'd also have to check if the address is aligned, because not all risc-v cores support unaligned word access.
Using byte access was just easier and just works (tm).
It probably can be faster if you do word access, but probably only if the memory is big enough, because of the additional checks you gotta do
>>
>>109730522
>It probably can be faster if you do word access
It'll definitely be faster if you do word access. Even if you have a few more instructions of checks, you'll make that time back in fewer memory accesses.
You only really have three things to check for. Unaligned starting section, unaligned ending section, and the middle section. You can essentially just cut the input range into those and then send off non-zero ones to their subroutines.

As that anon said, asking this question implies you know nothing about programming.
Rust is a systems language. Writing graphics in it is doable but it is considerably difficult and honestly there's not much point in it when you have way better tools for the job. Take a look at this rustacean's video on graphics programming in Rust:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ap8SsB1oMY

I mean, it is doable, but there's not much point in doing it forcefully in Rust

Wasted a collective ±3 days of writing and rewriting this parser for my DSL (I was repeatedly unsatisfied with the design, I felt my approach was sloppy) only to go on youtube and learn that properly writing a parser starts with something called "tokenization".
And after looking at examples and explanations of tokenization and surrounding concepts, it's so simple and elegant and I hate that I didn't just humble myself and do this research earlier.
Lesson learned, don't let your ego keep you stagnant.

Without the failure this would have not happened:
>Lesson learned,
Keep on doing it like this anon. It's the only real way of learning. Otherwise you will not understand WHY they do stuff the way they do it. Otherwise you will not be able to build an informed opinion if certain steps are necessary or can be omitted for your specific case.
Even tho it often feels daunting and takes at least one re-write, it's literally the best way possible
