Vega Nano was great, I really wish I could've gotten one. IIRC it didn't actually come out, but Sapphire's Vega Pulse used the same PCB and you could put custom heatsinks/waterblocks on it which were nano sized.

Wish we could go back to cards like those but nowadays you need 350mm long 4 slot coolers on a 200W card for some fucking reason.

As someone who owned this, while it was a god damn fantastic card if you got it day 1 in summer 1999 it was obsolete the moment Geforce 256 hit the market and that pissed me off.

It has no T&L every single game after 2000 has T&L and whats worse most games after 2003 would simply crash or become white blue and black boxes if you didn't have it.

Will Rock, Galactic Civilizations II, Battlefield 1942, No One Lives Forever 2, Command and Conquer Generals.

I can't count how many times I dispaired as a kid because I got the TNT 2 in like 2000 and I coudn't get enough money to buy anything else. All the way until Radeon 9000 Pro in Summer of 2004

I got a 1070 Strix with one defective fan for 47 but it does not even do over 95 Hz now that I have a 4K160 monitor too. Do you think I can sell it for 120 on Ebay and buy RTX 2000 or RX 5000? The replacement fan was 6 €, once it arrives the card would be as new.

I survived the first mining hype with one, definitely worthy, it runs pre 2020 in 1080p. Still lightyears beyond a 750 Ti or similar trash, just needs power. The R9 Fury I got for 30 € in 2022 was also decent, but you can't get them so cheap anymore. Its insane. The card was essentially a 980 Ti / 1070 with 4 GB.

Sadly things die eventually. My Phenom 9600 had lasted my entire teenage era with a HD2400 256 MB and 2 GB RAM. At times there was 4 cm cat hair on the bottom of the PC and it would overheat, but I was careless and the thing was trash anyway, it would run 24/7 because the bootup was 4 minutes.

When I finally wanted to upgrade and clean the cooler was glued on the CPU. There was a sticker on it left by HP, you can see its marks - A hint why you should not buy prebuilds. It had been there all the years, all my COD addiction, compiling custom maps, music and shitty video editing.

The CPU had an afterlife being my secondary HTPC after that. With 4 GB DDR2, my GT 530 and a 120 GB SSD it was surprisingly nice running 8.1 until I could afford better. But the power draw was immense. At last it served in my cellar printer machine until it refused to boot. It gives BIOS image but hangs.

i got a used gigabyte 1050ti on 2022 (i was on high school), and oh boy, that was a great upgrade from the good ol' gt710 (<- still better than the old laptop GPU 810M), and i enjoyed it for almost four years! The only issue was just the fan cranks itself 100% 24/7 cause the controller crapped itself, but using a headphone helps a bit. And i was a dumbass because i did not realize that my 2nd gen i5 bottlenecks slightly my computer, so there's stutters on heavy games
I also modeled a random-ass plate on last year of HS, though it's pointless because my computer's side panel is not clear.
Now, i have a used (again) 3070 on a "new" computer, not as crazy of a upgrade then when i got the 1050ti, but it's pretty nice, as it makes way less noise (fan controller is not broken + 100w limit because why not, and even then, it's still more powerful)

Those GPUs are tiny, but if theres space more cooling is always welcome. Just not on microdick cards like the 6500 XT. The 7970 was such ridiculous performance for the time, the Sapphire one I had was binned enough to be a 950MHZ card out of the box, and of you cranked the power limit all the way, it would do 1GHZ core 6000MHz effective mem easily, could've gone higher but thats what I ran stable

I guess it's possible for a low power card, they still make LP versions of those after all.

Sapphire toxic was so based, the 7970 was already a beast, but putting 6GB of ram on it means the card would stay relevant longer, people who spent a grand on a GTX 690 found themselves getting cucked by the 2GB of VRAM, meanwhile less powerful 780, 7970, Kepler Titan ended up being the better buy because of the 6GB frame buffer.

>What's your favorite old GPU?
i brought pic related (untested) a few months ago for $3, repasted it and was pleasantly surprised to see it work with no issues.
it crashed trying to play Civ 5 which i can only assume is due to VRAM limitations.
i like the old card designs with women on them.
>What old GPU are you using?
currently i have a E9173 in my shitbox pc paired with a ryzen 1200.
it is a weird card, it has DX12, Vulkan and openGL support despite only being a budget 2017 2GB card exclusively for office pc pre-builts.
>How long have you been enjoying it?
4 months.
it is comfy limiting yourself to old games or indies.

Thats why I wouldn't spend a lot on them. And fuck people who write stuff like "Vega 56 like RTX 2070 RX 6600" because even if the performance is the same its 3 times more aged with 3 times the power draw and no drivers.

For cheap its fine, you may not enjoy new games but you can enjoy 2010s titles. I got a GTX 980 for 30 € and this 1070 "Striks" (his writing) for 47 with one defective fan.

Best card I had was the 780 GTX, could play everything I could throw at it on max settings until 2015, back when flagships only cost $500. Worst card was the 8800GTX, died a few days after the warranty expired. Pretty sure most of them died due to critical design failures.

Fan cost was 6 € and 2 weeks of waiting, but should double the value to sell on Ebay until I eventually can power the 4K160 monitor I just got.

The card would suffice but sadly it has no DSC. Seems like I need a RTX 2000 for sure, they also have no DLSS, so the best you get is FSR3 with optiscalers fake DLSS. Thats likely why RTX 2000 are still so overpriced, new DLSS is a real gamechanger on lowend stuff. I would otherwise buy a 5700 XT again, but paying over 100 for a card that is just inferior is not an option. And FSR4 on RDNA1 will likely never be possible.

For ultra budget I currently see nothing better than the 970, start at 15 €, twice the performance of a 1050 and the 3.5 don't matter as much as you should not expect highend performance of it. Its still superior to a 1050 Ti.

Actually even the 960 is a bit faster than that, but the 2 GB hold it back.

Still have a 1050ti in a HP elite boxed up, was my gateway into PC gaming as it blew my mind you could just slap that card in anything and not need external power. The CPU on it runs warm and Dell put all their engineering into cooling the ram and nothing else for some reason.

3570k was the first time I didn't overclock but undervolt the chip, and 5600g was the first time I stopped using a dGPU. I just wish AMD released upgraded APUs, having one decent new chip every 5 years is pain, enough to make me consider getting a 5060.

Why though? Your 5060 Ti uses less power.

>>
>>109735154
>750 Ti and Kepler don't do DX12. They are so shit that a Vega/Raphael iGPU outperforms it.
The point is that any dx12 game requires so much computing power that even if 750ti could run a dx12 game the fps would be below enjoyer's 24 frames anyway.
So 750ti is like 1060ti but in dx11 league
>>
>>109759493
The real magic of DX12 on these older cards is actually on the cpu side - tools like dgvoodoo2 and dxvk can really help cpu throughput which in turn lets those older gpus sing in a way they never did.

>>
>>109759509
Personally I do not see magic - you just outsource gpu job to cpu. And get on top latency issues and gain heavy dependence on ram.
>>
>>109759266
>is $1200 a good deal for a used rtx 3090 that was only used for gaming and watching videos?
Unless you need the memory, compare the price of a 5070, which slightly outperforms the 3090 for gaming at 1080p and at 4K, generally, is new, and sucks less power.
>>
I have a 1070ti with a freshly applied arctic mx-4 thermal paste. I dont know how to deal with hardware stuff so the guy who sold me the pc did that for me. I've now learned a lot more about pcs since I got a remotely even for gaming one. is it really true that thermal pastes have to be constantly replaced (like every 6-12 months) once it no longer has the stock paste, or is that only an issue on newer cards like rtx 3070? I've read it draws way more power so its more of an issue, but I'd like to know if that's objectively true. also, weirdly enough, most people who complain about thermal paste often say to get a pad like ptm7950, overclock their gpus, or are from countries like phillippines. not saying this with ill intent just a trend i've noticed lol.
>>
>>109759728
> is it really true that thermal pastes have to be constantly replaced (like every 6-12 months)
No that is bullshit. Most thermal paste has a lifespan measured in years and the stuff that doesn't you'd know as you'd be purchasing and applying it yourself.

>often say to get a pad like ptm7950,
PTM7950 and equivalent products exist to solve a problem discrete gpus don't really run into.
>>
>>109759493
It means not opening while a Vega 7 APU can do so any play at 1124x resolution with nearly 60 FPS thanks to framegen, which made the difference between getting the Darktide event done and not back then. 750 Ti is so weak that a modern iGPU is likely better.

>>
>>109763492
PCIe x4 on anything below PCIe 4.0 will do that.
>>
>>109763477
Sure? no :) but its still more likely than not. reason why is flash memory of BIOS generally lasts about 10-20 years depending on manufacturer, so it always dies eventually, but more importantly it never just dies, it gets corrupted. So any microcode required for the later (X4) CPUs generally gets corrupted and it would be loading that right after the splash screen. If you had a spare CPU of the exact same type, and that did/didn't work, that would solve it. But another thing to definitely try is to use the X2 to go into the BIOS and increase Vcore voltage (or maybe it was some other voltage, can't remember, ask an AI because this is a known thing), then save changes and reboot with the X4 installed and see if it now passes the BIOS. They can need this after a few years but will stay stable afterwards. Basically the min voltage they run at is +0.1V after 1 year, +0.1V after 3 years, +0.1V after 10 years, +0.1V after 25 years, etc, i.e. non-linear. So it isn't a huge problem so long as you have a spare CPU

Do you think the BIOS chip is the reason? I've had a X4 940 and a 975 later, the AM2+ worked well despite being "AMD processor model unknown" but the 975 would only work on 800 MHz. Still a wonder it booted at all. The board has zero overclocking or any capabilities beside changing the time and boot priority.

AOE I was before the DE, these days I wouldn't want to play the old anymore. You have nostalgic memories about it, but once you actually do it you realize how shitty it was. No unit queue, worst pathfinding ever and many other issues. Even playing AOE II HD (which is essentially AoC just tied to Steam) felt weird after 5000h of AOE II DE. And 50 / 75 population limit was also hell. Back then my only workaround was to play MP against AI to get 200 at the cost of not being able to save.

But I definitely want to play Sub Culture and POD again. For the latter there is also some voodoo FX thing that makes those effects run on normal GPUs. My thought was to make a secondary shit PC only for that and use the VGA monitor from the cellar with it. These games unfortunately do not run in Win10. But otherwise I play them just on my regular 2026 PC. Fear 1 for example scales amazingly well in 4K, its main issue is low FPS when you have a high refresh rate mouse, but there is a fix. Another one I played a while ago was King Kong, the Kong missions crash unfortunately but the rest worked after years of trying, don't bother with disc version because the securom will ruin your system. You need either Windows XP or a cracked version. But the game was worth it, despite the shitty graphics the atmosphere is still good, why don't they remaster these games?

Graphics are generally a shock at first but you get quickly used to it, especially if you had played it as a child.

This is a waste of space but the compromise is perhaps worth it if you wanted an almost fanless PC. I imagine those fans barely ever spin.

I don't own one but I like that amd and nvidia have 8GB cards that simply support all the newest vulkan, opengl versions.
They for sure are the endgame card for the people who only want to play games from "when games were good."

I'm not sure about this but for linux gamers the newer vulkan versions these cards support might mean that you can use the open-source drivers in stead of the closed-source ones. And Proton probably runs better on these newer cards than on older cards with the same performance and same size vram. Because of the Vulkan support.

Recently I had to find a patch because the nvidia drivers for my gtx760 (2013) were no longer supported in the 7.0 linux kernel my distro was upgrading to. And I was upgrading my distro because it was complaining that support was ending. This 760 sits in my moms PC that she leaves running all day. The screen sleeps automatically of course.

I could see myself getting an amd rx7600 (2023) or something like it. Not likely upgrading past 1080p any time soon.

8800 gt
9600 gt
GTX 560ti
GTX 770
GTX 970
GTX 1080ti

and to a lesser extent RTX3090.

All of these had extremely good price-performance and pushed the envelope of what was possible at the time.

As much as I would like to use an AGP card, the system I'm building has no AGP slot because it uses a mini ITX motherboard, so I guess I'll stick with the MX4000 I already have.

Are you using one of those Via boards? If so the CPUs on those are weak enough that it shouldn't really matter anyway.
