I would begin watching in order the TV series, the End of Evangelion movie and reading the manga. Sadamoto's manga is more focused on Rei and her maternal figure, so if one likes that, like I do, it's certainly interesting from that point of view. On the other hand, it gives a much more cynical reading of Kaworu (completely personal opinion, it almost looked a bit *homophobic* to me). Afterwards one can watch the new movies.A word of warning, I project my aesthetical-ethical preferences on my Evangelion gens, they're a what-if/fanfic take on the series, but the show is famously depressing and occasionally grim.
