Does /g/ hack their consoles?
Almost none of my sestems are stock anymore
Having all games on one card is most convenient
>>
>>109742955
I don't own ewaste when I can emulate whatever on a superior platform.
>>
>>109742955
I haven’t modded any of my 3DSes yet. I have a good enough collection of games to play and don’t want to alter anything. If a 3DS cart existed though I’d probably get it.
>>

>>
>>109742955

>>
>>109743051
Nintendo DS might be the single worst platform to emulate
And its the last actually portable handheld, cant slip the steamkek in your pocket now can you?
>>109743074
What is there to lose?
You can even play games online again with Pretendo, I havent configured it yet but playing Mario Kart 7 online again sounds great
I own a ton of DS and 3DS gamecarts aswell, but everything on one card is much more convenient
Modded my switch before the 3ds and got a ton of use out of it
>>
>>109742955
love my rgh'd x360 slim
swapped the hard drive with a 500gb ssd, runs all my favorite mid 2000s games without any dumb driver issues or GFWL dogshit like some of the PC ports
>>
>>109743103
There’s no undo button for a mod, and I still have a working copy of Pokemon bank. Not saying I won’t mod in the future but for now I’ll stay stock.
>>
>>109743382
>There’s no undo button for a mod
I mean, maybe not one button but
3ds is softmod
You could revert to stock firmware and delete everything if you wanted as if it was never modded to begin with
Save games are stored on the gamecarts themselfs anyways so if you own the game physically there is 0 risk of losing data

>easy as fuck to mod
Despite the hardware being faulty by default, with some modding the PS3 Phat is absolute peak

I just set up a mini PC with steam ROM manager that can emulate every console game I care about up through PS3/X360/Switch and fits in a shoebox with 4 wireless controllers and dongles. Never using a console again. Admittedly DS games could be a pain in the ass, but the only ones I'm interested in are playable on one screen and don't need touch controls.
>>
>>109744339
Yeah but is it hooked up to a crt?
>>
>>109742955
>Does /g/ hack their consoles?
Banning risks aside, why wouldn't anyone go ahead and mod their consoles and pirate the platform's respective catalogue? Even a semi-literate moron--of which /g/ is now primarily comprised--can follow a set of instructions (more or less) required for contemporary softmods.

That being said, barring issues with a select few titles and the DS' touchscreen functionality, it's far more convenient to emulate what you can on PC (if you have the sufficient hardware that is).

Fortunately, with regards to the difficulty of emulating DS games one-to-one on PC, there are no games for the platform that you'd otherwise be missing out on.

>>109743091
You first, faggot.

>>109743913

I agree, but you're better off with an inexpensive slim if you don't care about native backwards compatibility .

my nintendo 3ds was my childhood, so one night i decided to mod it since my old laptop has an sd card slot and i've been able to get way more out of it since, just get a bigger sd card and install hshop and you can play whatever you want for free. it's 2026, if you haven't modded your console by now, you may as well just get rid of it.
>>
>>109745262
Hshop for me is slow as balls unless i download from it on my pc and nintendo at once, then nintendo is fast
Really annoying
>>
>>109742955
I used to do this
>>
>>109742955
I hack them, but not for games.
I write and run my own code on them.

>>
>>109743079
Fuck off, you arrogant son of a bitch. I only mod my consoles so I can pirate games
>>
The only systems I have that are unmodified are my current gen consoles, Xbox 360 (which I don't HAVE to use unmodded but I've never explored Bad Update/A Bad Avatar), and my original Sega Saturn (although it does have a Saroo so I can still play ISOs).

the only reason to own a 3DS isr fact that emulation cannot and will never, for the time being, be cable to give you the 3D effects the real device can. other than that, it's slop. FIGHT ME

>There’s no undo button for a mod
https://3ds.hacks.guide/uninstall-cfw.html
This guide is very thorough and assumes you installed all sorts of weird shit but if you just make a NAND backup as soon as possible after installing boot9strap, you can ignore most of it and only do the last step
https://3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usage.html#restoring-a-nand-backup
If you have a compatible DS flashcart, you can use the ntrboot method to launch godmode9 on *any* unmodded console (just use godmode9 as boot.firm) without installing anything, in which case you can create a completely clean NAND backup, and restoring that will cleanly unmod the console without extra steps.
https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot.html
>>
>>109746531 (Me)
Please remember though that an unmodded nand backup is tied to a specific console. You cannot use a different console's nand backup on any console.
The nice thing about ntrboot is it exploits a backdoor nintendo planted that is baked into the hardware, so with a backup you can recover from literally any fuckup. I have a 3ds that BSODs because I fucked up a hardmod and it will happily run ntrboot and godmode9 (not that it's very useful as I physically damaged the NAND connection).

autists hacking their devices to run their homebrew on it are the only reason we pirate leeches get the tools to install roms
So have fun my friend
I have to admit though, 90% of homebrew software on the DS and Wii was absolute useless dogshit
240P test suite and some emulators are the exceptions, but most homebrew is just bad games or mildy interesting software that gets boring after the novelty of having it run on a wii wears off

I have the backuped nand from bs9, could i use that to restore default aswell?
Not that I plan on doing it, but would be neat
>>
>>109746571
Homebrew was so much cooler before smartphones and smart tvs tbdesu.
I still love it because I hate my phone but back then a ds ebook reader and video player wasn't just a novelty.
>>
>>109746594
Oh. I installed boot9strap before safeb9sinstaller existed and the guide made no note of it creating a nand backup, but I just checked the code and it does, right before modifying the console.
So yeah, disregard most of what I said, any exploit method will give you a clean nand backup that you can restore later to leave literally no traces (it restores everything back to the pre-mod state *exactly*). I reckon the uninstall guide exists to keep your legit games and saves, but idk if I trust it to leave no trace.

Ah I remember the time as a kid when I got a friend to burn me a minecraft CD and tried to install it on the ancient family computer
I got as far as the dirtblock loading background before the game always crashed, had no ram
How excited I was to finally install games like portal and use emulators and minecraft and watch web videos without buffering when we got a slightly better pc at some point
Not exactly homebrew, but I do understand how you feel
Trying to get something out of your devices which they cant do is an kids now will never know

i am mostly interested in hacking Meta Quest 3, but i dont own one yet, im waiting for valve to come out first to see what that costs
>>
Is using an N64 flash cart considered hacking?
>>
>>109746571
>90% of homebrew software on the DS and Wii was absolute useless dogshit
That is fair. I don't mean to claim I write USEFUL shit for my consoles, I'm just writing shit for them because it is interesting to target consoles.
>>
>>109746723
There isn't a lot to hacking a quest, you just create a meta account, give it your credit card number (I'm serious, unless they changed it again) to enable developer mode, and then install random apks from there. And that's all anyone's cared to do really, there isn't much of a scene beyond piracy and specific games like beat saber.
>>
>>109746765
>you just create a meta account, give it your credit card number (I'm serious, unless they changed it again) to enable developer mode
That's the part you hack.
>>
>>109746765 (Me)
Oh right I forgot the part where it makes you install an app on your phone to link that meta account to for the developer mode toggle.
Thankfully you can remove it after.

On quest 3 piracy is almost mandatory, unless you want to play 20 euros for a fucking video player for example or only use PCVR
>>109746650
Neat.
Almost every 3ds here on the used market is pre modded, so me having an unmodded one was almost a unicorn
The wii I bought a while ago was also pre modded
Hacking consoles is so proliferated at this point, you cant buy a stock 3ds anymore pretty much
>>109746723
I own a modded quest 3s, very simple process but it does require you to install some shit to your pc and make a meta acc
Still, id highly recommend it, great standalone console
I use it standalone about as much as PCVR, games that dont need good graphics like rythm games, Superhot that kind of stuff are really nice on a standalone free of lag or limited play area or cables
The steam frame will be far more expensive and less versatile is my prediction
If it was atleast OLED it would have been worth it, but I dont think the upcharge will be worth it without an OLED screen
Real shame, if it had OLED id have consired upgrading to it
>>109746765
yeah sadly.
Im so sad VR is relatively dead, to me its like the Wii 2

I will admit once I started using things like ODEs and RetroTinks I felt like I had crossed a line to where I couldn't figure out if this was the way forward over just emulating every system I have and clearing out my house. DS emulation is pretty good on PC, but you have to flip around the screen layout per game depending how they use the 2 screens. And anything that uses touchscreen input for much is annoying. It works better on phones if you can find a controller that clips onto the sides in portrait orientation. Then you get a handheld with similar form factor to a DS, screens oriented vertically, and touch input working naturally.

3DS emulation is ass no matter how you cut it. You can either have everything grind to a halt when a new shader loads, or you can have objects pop in as their shaders load. Neither option is great. And then there's things that just work naturally on a 3DS like AR that are a pain to make work decently when emulating it on a PC. Also the glasses free 3D is really neat in a lot of games.
Playing at a higher resolution is great. There's just a lot of sacrifices though.

>If a 3DS cart existed though I’d probably get it.
3DS flashcart? It does exist, though it's not as fluid an experience as R4 on DS. Sky3DS+ is the only one that works on all stock firmware versions without any modification. But since it doesn't use any exploits, it can't run a menu program to select a game. It also can't run romhacks, homebrew, or eShop exclusives that didn't come on a cartridge. It just pretends to be a retail game cartridge, with all cartridge encryption, region locking and DRM intact. You put some 3DS cartridge dumps on its SD card, and press the little orange buttons on the top of the cartridge to cycle between them. Pressing the buttons simulates ejecting the cartridge and then inserting the next one.

Compare to CFW which removes region locking and bypasses all the DRM and security to allow out of region games, romhacks, cheats, homebrew, emulators, and system module hacks to remap buttons or restore online features. It also allows romhacks to be loaded as a "layeredFS" which is a folder of modified files from the game, so you can play a romhack without a whole duplicate install of the game, or even off a retail cartridge.

I didn't use the 3D outside of cutscenes until I got a New 3DS. It looked neat but it was annoying to play while keeping the console perfectly straight and dead center in front of my eyes because of the tiny viewing angle, outside of which the 3D breaks into double vision. The New ones added "Super Stable 3D" with face tracking that moves the parallax barrier around to follow your face. That works really well and now I play a lot of games with 3D on all the time.

I still need to buy a 3DS. Only reason I haven't yet is because I don't know how to make it to it can display the output to a monitor. You can pay someone to do it, but I don't trust most of them.

Luckily I'm not really a hoarder and it doesn't take long removing games and transferring new ones on if you're using DBI/USB 3.0.
>>109756238
I still use my Gateway. I looked at the process of converting Gateway saves and it's a huge pain in the butt so I never bothered installing CFW.

i have a modded 3ds and a laptop to play videogames and outside of getting framerate on some more demanding games (lots of which tend to also not be very fun anyways, interesting pattern!) i see no reason to buy any other older console (except the wii) other than for the aestethic of it
if i had lots of money id also get a ps2 and games for it purely for memories sake but otherwise its kind of silly to me
a modded 3ds is absolutely a swiss army knife of videogame hardware though and i recommend it c:

I love installing 100 games and never playing.
Seriously, ive touched maybe 10 lol
>>

hacking consoles and seeing a library with 100 games is almost more fun then actually playing

Well, what would you consider old? Anything below the PS2 is pretty easy to emulate. So unless you like to hoard ewaste then don't buy them. But there are still some good games on the PS3 generation and up. I haven't been keeping track of PS3 emulation so I might be wrong, but last I checked it was pretty stagnant. So I modded my PS3 and just been playing PS3 games there.
Looking at my spreadsheet here's a couple of PS3 exclusives I played:
Another Century's Episode: R
Ar Tonelico Qoga
Demon Souls
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness
Drakengard 3
Genji: Days of the Blade
God of War: Ascension
Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo 6
Heavenly Sword
Infamous
Infamous 2
Legasista
Mist of Chaos
Resistance 2
Resistance 3
Resistance: Fall of Man
Tales of Xillia 2
White Knight Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles 2

There's also some neat games on the 360 that I want to play but I just never got around to it.

My ds/3ds emulation setup is using my jailbroken switch and streaming the bottom screen on it. Works great the only thing I can't easily do is put the whole console sideways as some games have you do

>Support for all 3DS firmware versions up to V11.17.0-50.

i have one even though my systems modded i like flashcarts
>>
>>109758826
No, I have a fast PC. If you have an emulator that handles shaders better, let's see it.

What I have is the "2 orange buttons" version of Sky3DS+, and it works with all games on everything up through 11.17.0-50. Unlike some early versions it doesn't require any pre-processing of ROMs, and doesn't have a limit to how many ROMs. You just drag them onto the SD card and it works. They do have to be encrypted .3ds files though. Most .3ds roms I see these days are decrypted, but there are tools that can re-encrypt them.

oh works the same as the stargate then, wonder if stargate is just the sky3ds rebadged

having a hacked switch lite is comfy. it's the best portable console on the market because it's the only one that fits in a pocket. nothing even comes close

I also had a hacked ps3 when I was a child. good memories

>>109750132
switch lite has no softmod
>>
>>109743913
afaik there is now an easy foss hardmod for slim/superslim models. they are way cooler and smaller than fat
>>
>>109742955
I did but the SD cards keep dying.
>>
>>109763780
What capacity, brand, and are you using full-sized SD card, or microSD cards in an adapter?
>>
>>109763739
>switch lite
ah yes, the switch without anything that makes the switch cool and good
>>
>>109765634
i use a microsd in an adapter for my 3ds
Is that bad?
>>
>>109765634
Full-sized, it's a mymemory sd card, it's a shop in the UK that sells reputable SD cards. Though I can't seem to identify which their own brand ones use.
