Nothing is left to the imagination, everything must be hyper-realistic, illuminated with a floodlight and crystal clear. Stylistic choice and subtlety are relics of a bygone age.

Looks like ambient occlusion, except you only get a quarter of the framerate. To me this looks like Nvidia starting to grasp on straws as the gaming GPU market withers.
>>
i think it's clearly beneficial in the specific applications it was meant for.
There must be something I'm missing though, because it's kind of strange to me that developers can't just replicate the effect with more detailed meshes, textures, and higher quality rt/pt for less of a performance hit. On the face of it it doesn't appear to be doing anything 'magical' that higher quality assets and lighting wouldn't provide - and they are already scanning real faces and objects and theoretically path tracing is capable of simulating real lighting to realistic levels.
Just feels like there shouldn't have even been such a wide gap between current graphics and photorealism for dlss5 to slot into at this point.
>>
Like df video said
its akin to dlss 1, or ray tracing
tech demo stage at launch
perf gets better later and gpus run it better

As a tool it's fine, it does make games aspiring to be photorealistic to be more photorealistic
>>
>>109751721
Well the lighting looks like it improves somewhat, but it's not something major. I would turn it on if it's nearly free in terms of performance. What's the FPS cost again?

The problem is the inconstency. Turn around and look at the same scene again and the model applies entirely different lighting.
If you only rotate around a point or look at stills, it looks good.
Not nearly good enough to obliterate your framerate like this.

>dlss 1
>spatial upscaler, per-game training required
>grand total of 2 games used it, both with heavy Nvidia involvement
>quietly replaced with completely different technological method and never mentioned again
I don't think you ever want to be compared to DLSS 1
>>
>>109751928
Comparedly its an important stepping stone to the better version. It was combersome to train, but worked.
FSR meanwhile was terrible until the machine learning version, thats what you dont want to be compared to.

And yes dlss5 isnt doing great if only a tiny fraction of the market can enable it and it fucks off with half of their fps, but its a stepping stone to the better mainstream version of the tech you see in the future.
>>
>>109751949
>important stepping stone
If you're using a completely different technological method with the only thing having any continuity being the goal and the name it's really not a stepping stone. It was a detour that led to a dead end that you backed out of.
>>
>>109751967
no
the tech overlaps with the different versions, same people work on it and learn as they go, they use similar programs and hardware to get to the end result
fsr 2 and fsr 4 meanwhile is what you're thinking of, completely different methods that prob require different talent working on it using different software tools and hardware

DLSS 2/3 overlaps with 4, but the spatial upscaler in 1 was something completely different and was an actual dead end. I'll remind you that there was a DLSS "1.9" used exclusively for Control that didn't even run on tensor cores.

Ray tracing is a good comparison I think, it's still in the tech demo stage. There's little to no reason to take the performance impact from raytracing even in the current year, it will be the same for this too.

On a mildly related note what causes people to start lying so much on the internet.
Like they can't neutrally take in information, synthesize it and reproduce information accurately.
The lies are flavors of ideological in group talking points popular on reddit, or brand warring, trolling on 4chan.
>I decideded ai is bad, datacenter bad, high hardware prices bad, so dlss 5 is bad. No, I dont need examples of it in games.
>Heres a [not dlss 5 image]. Its dlss5! -> Wow, I can't believe people are so insane they like dlss5 based on this image I know is not dlss5.

>>
>>109755052
its bad because its non deterministic output
>>
>>109755063
Oh, dlss 5 is deterministic tho.
>>
>>109755103
how?
>>
>>109755184
Well you give it input and it gives you output
theres no randomizer step
>>
>>109755196
Do you think LLMs are deterministic?
>>
>>109755213
No, but dlss 5 isn't a llm
its trained from a dataset of photos, not text, and they specifically made it to not change the videogames intent
Every time you give it same input it will give you same output.
>>
>>109751721
Looks oversaturated, over-sharpened, there is a lot of shimering, problems with temporal stability, and it obliterates the framerate. The benefits it provides to the faces of the characters can be replaced with competent shading with barely any impact to the framerate (example: detroit become human, death stranding).
As of now it's a interesting tech demo but that's all it is. I have no will to play my games using it. It's a toy i would play with for half an hour and then forget it exists. That combined with the fact that it's proprietary means that if i was a dev i wouldn't waste time trying to implement it. Unless they manage to figure out how to fix all it's problems (mainly the shimmering and temporal stability) and create a pipeline so that implementing it in consoles and other gpu brands is easy, this tech will be forgotten just like physics.
>>
>>109755226
Does that happen with other image generation ai software?
>>
>>109755482
Typically they have a randomization element so you can give same prompt and press re-generate to get different image.
https://research.nvidia.com/labs/adlr/files/DLSS5_Report.pdf

>2.3. One Step Diffusion
>DLSS 5 employs a single-step diffusion inference rather than iterative stochastic sampling. Each
enhanced frame is produced in a single deterministic inference step; given the same rendered se-
quence and configuration, the system produces the same output sequence.
>>
>>109755535
its always be the same across all processes and machines then? neat
>>
>>109755226
>and they specifically made it to not change the videogames intent
Damn they really made an AI understand artistic intent. I wonder if they needed to define art or if the big token guesser did it on its own
>>
>>109751721
literally who fucking cares

"realism" in games is trash. they're GAYMEZ. I don't want to do chores in a game, I don't want the game to look like real life. I want artistic vision in game, and I want it to be fun. we'll never get anything like jet set radio future again. wow look at you, you can see DLSS acne and pubic hair on a nigger's face WOW!!!!!
>>
>>109755052
It's a stupid idea just like raytracing. It kills performance and isn't a straight upgrade over anything.
>>
>>109751721
Garbage, obviously. Even if we ignore the fact that it's coming at the cost of true performance gains and games being well optimized, its very goal is awful. Video games do not always look better as fidelity increases. In fact, I'd argue graphics peaked ten years ago, everything since then has been nothing but actual downgrades and performance hits.
Turning DLSS5 on is making video games worse, but not turning it on is going to make them run like shit because developers either have stopped trying, or are no longer skilled.
>>
>>109756663
Tell that to the majority of idiots who worship Nvidia and this technological abomination as if it were the solution to all the ills of the gaming world.

>not turning it on is going to make them run like shit
Dlss5 and dlss in general have nothing to do with how well games run. Even turning on rt has no impact on the performance of a game or how well it's optimized.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and my school got a "new" digital camera. It was something like 1/8th of a megapixel and when I took a picture of a frog it turned out looking like frogger. Dlss5 is alot like that but backwards.
>>
>>109759143
There are several components to DLSS, and one is frame gen. Which, if developers become reliant on, is very bad news for us.
>>
>>109759143
>Even turning on rt has no impact on the performance of a game or how well it's optimized.
Go check benchmarks of RT games and see the fps loss AMD experiences compared to NVIDIA, where in other games without it AMD closes the gap significantly (or even surpasses certain models). RT for sure has a performance impact.
Additionally, its existence means developers don't try to implement lighting properly, telling users the intended experience is using this proprietary feature primarily supported by NVIDIA.
>>
>>109759152
>>109759164
Yeah, with rt you're right and the fact that devs are creating games that require rt is a very bad sign of things to come. I can see a future where games will refuse to launch if they don't have some form of neural rendering capability detected.
>>
>>109751721

honestly dont know what the quality is like (thanks for mp4) because 99% of the discussion is butthurt whining and memes. the last time they tried ai dlss it seemed like there were big consistency problems, but this time, if there are still problems, you wouldn't know, because every video game fanartist is limping out about it instead of showing what it can do
