I've recently assembled a Core 2 Quad era system with parts i had laying around.
It has a Q6600, GA-P35-DS3L, 8Gb of DDR2 @800MHz and a 8400GS, and as the main disk an old 500GB laptop HDD.
I've tried it and it runs Windows 10 without any major problem, only worse than it probably could because of the HDD. However, i am considering installing Linux on it so it runs a little faster, or better, switch to an SSD and keep the HDD as only storage.
My idea was turning it into a kind of data backup/cold storage system in which to put anything that's taking up space in other machines, eventually adding more HDDs if the 500GB one isn't enough.
On a side note, i have the opportunity to get a Q9550 for about 25€, is it worth it? Since the board itself isn't too bad for overclocking, it'd be fun to push some more performance out of it for shits and giggles, but nothing too serious.
Any idea is welcome. Thank you for your time.

Is that your system in the picture? Mount the Hard Drive you stupid Nigger.

The Q9550 is a MUCH better chip than the 6600, but the P35 motherboard is limiting you as its not PCIe gen2. Gen a P45 if you can't afford X48/790i. Q9650 or X5470 are even better CPUs for P45 motherboard actually.

That's the one I had. Long gone, though. I never really thought of keeping my old computers at the time. Mobo was an Asus P5Q pro with a Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and a creative SB-XFI extreme audio. That board was beautiful with all the copper.

I literally can't. Not decently at least. The case only has 3.5" or 5.25" bays and the holes for them aren't the right spacing to screw in a 2.5" disk, so that was the best I could do.

I mean, I'd sure love to have an X48 with the 5470, but in the end it's not like I'm gonna use it that much to justify a probably +200€ upgrade. Maybe in the future. Might still get the Q9550 though.
