I was talking to a lad today who told me the older CRTs are superior to modern flat screens. He says the response time is zero and the colors are more vibrant. Is this true? If so why is nobody using them anymore? Anybody here still using an old school CRT monitor?
>>109766440>If you tilt a reflective surface towards a light it will reflect lightbravo Anon I look forward to your PhD.
>>109766440holy shit thats amazing. how did we get tricked into using flat screens?
>>109766431>He says the response time is zero YesBut more importantly their motion clarity is vastly superior to even OLEDs due to lack of sample&hold blur>are more vibrant. Compared to TNs and some particularly bad IPS panels, yes.Compared to a decent quality sRGB IPS, about equal (trades blows, colors on CRTS get washed out at bright colors, while LCDs wash them out at dark colors, pick your poison).Compared to widegamut displays or any OLED, less vibrant.>If so why is nobody using them anymore? A decent community still use them, myself included.I even own a bigger brother of the monitor you sent.
>>109766431short answer no, longer answer not really.
>>109766431>>109766468>the response time is zero Oh I should elaborate, that while this is true, in modern times it's an irrelevant point. Almost any decent modern display has an absolutely negligible amount of processing latency (100µs range), and QFT video modes allow modern displays to beat CRTs at equal refresh rate by eliminating the scanout delay (but since literally nobody in /g/ except CRT nerds has ever heard of QFT; none you are using it).Though I wonder how the instant 10k lumen flash vs slow fade-in affects our biochemical response times.
sounds like we got screwed LCDs should have never taken over. apparently looking into a CRT is like looking into heaven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RKyPsE9Locim going to try to find one on marketplace and report back
>>109766675>im going to try to find one on marketplace and report backSee you in a couple years. The good 21" tubes are basically unobtanium now.
>>109766431I've given up on getting my hands on a quality one and the rest isn't worth burdening yourself with in my opinionhoping for QDEL to be a true LCD replacement but that won't come out anytime soon
I would love to use a CRT again. One of the high-end high-res high-refresh units. I am holding out for a premium unit at a reasonable price.
>>109766431the one thing CRT is better for is video games, but the screen size and dimensions are a massive drawback.
>>109766871This. Though with 21" units the size isn't really an issue anymore. But yeah good like ever finding one.

>>109766694this one looks good but newegg is out of them right nowhttps://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824006010
>>109767380Anon it's been out of stock for 23 years
>>109766431In terms of motion, yes. CRTs are superior to just about every display that followed. Plasmas also had good motion. (but not suitable as a monitor)
>>109767387it'll be back in stock any day now
>>109767380wow look at this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/267771113774
>>109767387shit im still looking.
>>109766440CRTs only have better black levels if you use them in a dark room. In a normally lit room, the LCD will outperform it.
>>109767380wow the reviews sound so human the internet was crazy back then>Comments: I’ve had this monitor for about 4 months now and I must say that it evokes a sensual visual pleasure that enhances my computing experience. The only downside is that it has a long neck. That’s it. The upside is that the display is absolutely rectilinear with gorgeous colors. I previously owned a NEC E950 19” that I liked quite well, but it was killed prematurely by a nearby lightning strike. Since I had to buy a new monitor, I took a chance on this Sony E540 which didn’t cost much more than my NEC when I bought it, but WOW what a difference! Saying that I felt I was taking a chance on a Sony sounds silly considering Sony’s great reputation, but the price was so low (<$500 for 21”) that I worried that I would get a lot of glass but, perhaps, a little fuzziness or maybe muted phosphors. I was totally wrong to have doubted. This monitor is just a great buy. I used to be an SE working in the corporate environment and I’ve installed a lot of 21” monitors over the years FOR OTHER PEOPLE. I remember when Sony monitors of this size, but with poorer performance, cost $3,000. Yeah ok, I’m an old guy. On that point…if you wear reading glasses, you can crank the res back to 1024 x 768 and take you glasses off. I usually run it at 1152 x 870 for PhotoShop and Illustrator, however. The tube even looks great at 1280 x 1024 but you want to make sure that your video card can manage at least an 85 Hz refresh rate. I know it will manage even higher resolution, but the icons become too small for my taste. At all resolutions the text is crisp; and the colors really pop. Remember, this is you window into all of your work and the Internet. The screen is where your mind interfaces with the machine. In my opinion, if you buy this monitor, you will be a very happy user. I continue to love it day after day. Maybe it was a fluke, but newegg had it to me in 5 days using standard shipping
>>109767413Anon, you wont find shit right now. I started looking for a CRT in 2019 and it took a whole year before I obtained my first 21"-class CRT, and that was by checking local marketplaces and classifieds several times every day for that whole year. And this in EU where such monitors are much more abundant than in the US. You don't seem like someone with the patience to even read this post, let alone commit to scouring through listings for a CRT the next couple years. Start with some random piece of shit you can get free-to-$20 locally. That's what I initially had too.
