I want to make a gift for my dad, some streamer box so he can watch his (pirated, duh) documentaries and old movies now that he's retired. I know some combination of a mini PC and Plex/Jellyfin/etc will do it but what software should I use specifically? I'm getting analysis paralysis.

My main hang-up is that I want subtitles to get automatically fetched and machine translated if possible because he only speaks Greek which doesn't get subtitles often, but MTL from English subs is usually fine.

You might be better off asking this in /hsg/. It's probably going to be some -arr stack software, I'm pretty sure there's something in there for automatic subtitle fetching. Getting them autotranslated may or may not require some nigger-rigging on your end - it's definitely possible some way even if that means writing a script to call google translate's API or something, but there may also be a feature in the -arr software or in Jellyfin to do it directly.

Yes it's fine, the main difference in HDDs is CMR vs SMR where basically SRM (shingled) is very very slow for overwriting any data. For a write-one-read-many usecase like storing and watching movies it basically doesn't matter. (If it did matter, a lot of those external portable drives are cheaper SMR ones so would be worth avoiding, but again here it's fine.)

Main thing to look out for is size. 3.5'' ones usually can't be powered from a single USB port (unless they make USB-C ones that can do PD for high power connections? hmm) - traditionally that meant either a nigger rigged split cable to power it from multiple USB ports, or an external power jack. 2.5'' are normally powered fine directly from any USB port.

I did a stupid and bought a single 32GB ram stick thinking it was x2 16gb. I tried putting it in my PC in addition to the x4 4GB already in my PC and it failed to boot. Am I screwed? For college one of those e-paper tablets is actually a very good idea. The 10'' ones with pen support, so you can read PDFs on a decently sized screen, annotate documents directly, take notes and draw diagrams, etc.
A decent one like a boox air whatever is gonna be like $400. If you can afford it it's definitely worth it. You might be able to find used ones for cheaper, a model that's a few years old is going to be perfectly fine too.
But if you're on a budget then look for the cheapest used boox/pocketboox/onyx/kobo you can find. Having a 7'' screen or larger is still useful for PDFs, if you get a tiny kindle it's going to be ass for anything that's not an ebook. (PDFs aren't reflowable because they're already typeset, they're page-based, so on a tiny screen the PDF pages will look tiny.)

Most normal readers can take PDF and epub just fine, Kindles in particular are amazon's walled garden garbage so might need jailbreaking or something.

Video is almost always most of the size, languages are unlikely to be very big. You're lucky if 18GB is the video and you can delete 2GB, I doubt it'll even be close to that much.
But you can try to re-encode the movie to be smaller, if you're short on storage page a slightly more compressed movie that's slightly preceptively worse if you pause and stare at still frames to compare artifacts, might still be worth it. Assuming you're keeping movies to watch them and not for archiving a high quality media library, what matters is that you enjoy watching

For calls, latency barely matters. Even 0.1-0.2 seconds of delay is really not an issue. If you really want to, kaspersky or malwarebytes are (or used to be) relatively passable. But you really don't need that shit if you're not doing shady stuff.
And if you are doing shady stuff OR if you're paranoid, you'd be much better off served by implementing proper containerisation. On windows I don't know if "containers" as such are easy but VMs are: run your web browser in a VM. Run your cracked pirate software in VMs. Run your torrent client in a VM.
Use one VM per program, keep the rest of your files outside the VM except for what's directly needed for the program's access. Don't move executable files into/out of VMs (except for initial install obviously). Only do stuff outside the VM when it's something that's definitely clean, not at all shady, and trusted.

Do that and you'll be miles and miles safer than when using an antivirus.

65W (really everything above 5W) requires USB negotiation. Your phone is not detecting it as compatible, or the cable you're using is faulty.
If you've got a good cable that's definitely good for charging, and the connections sit securely, then there's not much to it except return it at that point because either the charger is a chinkshit scam or your phone refuses to be compatible with it. i received my MSI vector 16 hx ai back today after CPU overheating problems. during the warranty repair they replaced the motherboard twice and replaced the screen twice. they also replaced a fan and the hinges/other screen related stuff.

#1 why would they need to replace all that stuff? the CPU would reach over 100 even capped at 4ghz so lord knows how it acted when they must've stress tested it.

#2 why did they replace the screen twice? can an overheating CPU cause the screen to die?

they said because the fan wasn't working properly the heat had nowhere to go. did they fry the board or something? i'm very tempted to extend the warranty for another 2 years until 2030 for another £210. seeing as Google ai said that this repair cost nearly 2 grand.

for what it's worth the specs are a core ultra 9 275hx, rtx 5080 and 32gb ram.

Apple music is the highest quality music streaming service. No one, and I mean no one, is streaming a true flac file. Even Qobuz isn't a true flac. Qobuz is a bit better than apple music, but it's very limited, only mainstream music is put on there.

Depending on which it is it's either a retarded design/retarded design oversight or you just picked out a poor cable IEC cables are usually straight, not angled and whoever designed this probably did so for straight cables. Anyone done tablet repairs? How reliable are the batteries from Amazon? I need an A1566 battery for an iPad Apple Air 2. I don't want to burn down my house though.
ifixit sells these batteries, but shipping and the battery costs around $80, whereas the Amazon batteries are only $30-$40. Considering I can buy a Samsung tablet for $300 I don't think it's worth it if I buy the ifixit batteries.
So, should I not bother repairing the tablet or can I make do with the Amazon batteries?

The issue is the cable having a 90* plug. The cable on my PSU has a straight plug for example. Even on corner plugs, there's no standard direction for it to bend, so the cable could've just been on the other side, and conversely if they flipped the socket on the PSU someone else's 90* cable could cover the switch.
The only way to avoid this would've been to not put the switch in line with the cable at all but I guess that's probably less convenient for the internal design and they didn't bother to think about accomodating the people who might use an angled cable.

Just get a straight cable. It's a standard power plug, I don't remember the name but search for cables on amazon and find the ones that have the same looking prongs and find one with a straight plug. Check the amperage to be safe but normally they should all be pretty standard.

I know some that use VeraCrypt. Although I don't think it's able to encrypt the OS drive. So you would need to install the OS in a different drive and have all your data in a different drive that's encrypted with VeraCrypt. I'm not sure what kind of data is stored in the OS drive though and since you're not encrypting that there still might be a risk.

I say just use bitlocker. A thief probably won't have the tools to crack bitlocker. But if someone really wants to get into your files, then you don't really have any option. VeraCrypt so far hasn't been cracked and I believe you can recover bitlocker passwords if you have the tools to do it. Your average thief won't have those tools but government agencies do.
