My experience with Gemini is it has very good information collection/analysis for this sort of thing, but defaults to this very California hype language - any innovation is blazingly fast, any alteration to the status quo changes everything, blah blah. This is how people talk out here, from a mixture of enthusiasm, television conditioning, and business hustle. Californians (especially northern californians) are nice but shallow.
Anyway, my go-to recalibration is 'don't hype me, don't prompt me. adhere to a professional academic tone' and then tell it to give you more less detail as needed. I often ask it for a tabular comparison or you can tell it whether to prioritize breadth over depth. Basically once you get it out of hype mode and into science mode it works very nicely. I prefer Deepseek overall and would rather share my data with them instead of the feds, but I do think Gemini is a superior model for general research.
BTW occasionally guardrails kick in and it doesn't want to answer, you need to tell it 'I understand you cannot give financial/medical/whatever advice' and it is generally compliant once you explicitly free it of liability. A more annoying problem is that it often omits or fucks URLs, especially to github, so it's not great for troubleshooting or security stuff. Deepseek is more reliable in that regard.
