For most text conversations this is perfectly adequate, everyday working vocabulary of Japanese is only 1500-3000 words. Within this range you could function completely without kanji even though you would seem kind of illiterate.It's Japan of course so some autists are literally writing a novel on dumbphones. And of course there are studies showing that smartphones are causing people to forget how to write kanji or read them in some cases. I don't think they will ever move to pure kana like Koreans did Hangul because there are a lot more homophones in Japanese but technology is definitely going to change how the language evolves.
