VPNs on Android are a bit of a clusterfuck to be honest with you. The DNS and encrypted DNS stuff from a developer's perspective is a massive headache. There is an API there, but it kind of sucks. At the system level, it tends to leak shit all the time, the radio (3G-LTE/4G/5G) -- All horrible. Terrible platform. Still better than Apple though. Because at least on Android they give you the fucking documentation.

Google probably added it as a potential backdoor to bypass VPN style ad blocking apps for extracting something they considered too valuable. Sure it was only detected on UDP port 4500 but it could have further reach.
