It is if you get into playing actual games that have just been modded into VR. Actual VR games are not worth it because they're all some sort of tech demo instead of a real game. Actual games ported into VR are amazing though. I'm playing Kingdom Come deliverance 2 right now and that alone is worth the price of the headset. Also played cyberpunk which was amazing.

>>
>>109801875
Don't buy the 2. It's not for any of the reasons people usually say. The resolution or lenses aren't the problem, the decoder is. You are limited to way shittier decoding so your image quality will never be as good. This includes if you use a link because the quest's data is compressed even over link. The quest 3 is a huge visual upgrade because it gets rid of all the compression artifacts. You can do 500 mbps vs 300 with quest 2.

Retards don't understand that Q3 is "cheaper" because Facebook sells them at a loss. And you're paying the difference with YOUR data, YOUR privacy, and YOUR analytical behavior.

On the other hand, Steam Frame has GNU+Linux preinstalled, and it allows you to install whatever you want, even Gentoo. It doesn't harvest your data, it doesn't snoop on you. You're paying extra for not being an ad-cattle but be a white man that has FREEDOM.

I don't use it for anything except alvr streaming, zucc can't steal my data when there is none. and you can also dekikify it using some scripts (I guess). btw there are chinese quest clones like pico 4 (they are less jewish afaik)

gaben has made a useless toy with a high-end cpu and a shit ton of ram. nobody needs it
>>
So foveated streaming is very based and could legitimately solve the issue of every single game having to be mobile slop tier
HOWEVER
Since it will be limited to steam frame only it will not be enough for any serious high quality games to be developed
I guess I'll see it in another 5-10 years where MAYBE that'll make a difference
With hardware prices though unlikely

vr streaming is solved, everybody has been using virtual desktop/alvr for 4+ years. it may not be ideal but the difference isn't worth 2x the price compared to q3. they should have made a slower headset with better displays because there is no usecase for a snap 8 gen 3 with 16gb of ram in a headset with no games

I don't think that's true anymore. The Quest2 definitely sold at a loss, but these things have been in mass production for so long that Zucc probably even makes a small profit on each unit by now. The Quest3 is *3 years old*

Another unfortunate victim of RAMageddon.
Headsets with standalone capability are going to get fucked since they need to have RAM. Meta already was forced to raise the price of the Quest 3.
At 1000 USD frame is flirting with premium headset territory while essentially being an entry-level headset. If you already own a good gaming PC you might as well double down and get a bigscreen or a pimax at that price point.
And if you don't already own a good gaming PC it's not really worth the money just for a standalone tier VR experience.
It's not Valve's fault. But it's also Valve's fault for fucking the dog and not getting it to market before RAMageddon.
>>
>>109806676
Valve would've cut down the RAM, 16gb with current prices is literally asking to have 1k+ price tag. I'm not even sure what's the percentage of users willing to run it purely as a standalone, and it feels like everyone is going PCVR streaming instead.
>>
>>109806732
i wish they'd just turned it into a non-standalone streaming headset. i genuinely cannot see any usecase for fully standalone use considering the battery life
>>
>>109806732
Yeah I mean it was only ever going to be an alternative option to the Quest 3 for people who are already into PC Gaming. And now I'm just not sure it's worth it.
I wouldn't even recommend the Quest 3 at its current 600 USD price tag. They fucked up the controller firmware on an update over a year ago which causes them to become unstable and constantly drop into sleep mode even during use and its only gotten worse and Meta has just started to admit to the problem after years of receiving complaints but haven't done jack shit about it. No option for any kind of firmware rollback, no option to disable the controller hibernation, literally zero solution they just get some pajeet to read you the same bullshit placebo trouble-shooting procedure even thought hey now, internally, know the issue is much worse than that. And literally all the have to do is fucking roll back the firmware and not force it to auto-update.
And someone mentioned PSVR2, I bought an open box one for dirt cheap out of morbid curiosity and I wouldn't recommend that either. At the PC software side of things, things are still absolutely janky, you need to also factor in the cost of the adapter and an HDMI cable because fuck you for thinking they would include one for the 50 USD the adapter costs. Then the controller connectivity is garbage unless you buy an exact specific model of bluetooth dongle and install their proprietary firmware update to it and by then you've basically paid 66% Quest 3 dollars for it and it's uncomfortable and the controllers feel like children's toys and for some ungodly reason the grips are buttons instead of analog pulls.
Entry level VR is "cooked" as the zoomgroids would say.

it was good btw, but linear with no replayability
>>
>>109806804
I will add to this and say that if you are looking to try VR but not already into it look for a used Quest 2 on your local buy and sell. People win them at wedding raffles, use them once, throw them in the closet and forget about them for 5 years and then throw them up on facebook marketplace for whatever the going rate is without looking online to see they could get 3 times as much money by parting out the controllers separately.
Not the best PCVR experience, but cheap enough that if you decide you want something better you don't feel bad ditching it in an early upgrade.

its not a real leak. more like viral marketing. linus fucked it up and nerds took advantage of it, so they say.

Qualcomm can also use UEFI and the Frame likely has it.

Every VR game now is either a tech demo or indieslop for quest kids. And quest kids are an unironic problem because they are a way bigger audience than pc players and at the end devs ruin their games by targeting quest. Pavlov VR has gone to shit because the multiplayer is now filled with unironic 10 year olds. before that (remember playing it around 19-21) it used to be a game with a great mature community.

If you want a good wireless experience you want a wifi7 chip and a powerful decoder. Basically a mobile SoC. And in that case you might as well add some more storage and RAM and make it a Deck too.
If you want a wired headset there are tons of other options , if you want a cheap but shitty and locked down PoS there is the quest and pico.
>>
>>109811116
>If you want a good wireless experience you want a wifi7 chip and a powerful decoder. Basically a mobile SoC. And in that case you might as well add some more storage and RAM
Wrong. Thinking this way has ruined valve ecosystem. Exactly this.
If they decided to do bare minimum, high end radio and only video decoding, without putting an absurdly expensive compute and RAM in there, it would pair very well with Steam Machine.
Instead of doing that, they decided to build another fucking steam deck. When quest already exists and is sold by zuck at loss. Idiotic business decisions by valve here.
>>
>>109811081
Steam Frame literally requires you to login into the same steam account on your PC if you want to play pc games.
>>
>>109811153
I'm so tired of explaining this and the people who don't want to pay for standalone will never end so there's no point in trying to inform every person, but this is /g/ and not /v/.

The headset needs compute because it's wireless. It's not just wireless video that needs to be decoded, now there's no low latency connection to a PC to do everything else. The headset needs to do computer vision like slam tracking, eyetracking, and handtracking, sensor fusion with the IMUs with prediction. Reprojection to double your frame rate is best done on the headset because it has the latest pose data and you transmit native frames instead of twice the frames. All these things have more or less quality depending on the power of the SOC. Tired of people with no idea how VR works saying "just make X bro its cheaper". The only thing valve could've done was separate the compute so you can use the frame as a wired headset. But this would be a wasteful idea before ram and storage prices went retarded and by then it was too late. They couldn't delay an already slow to market headset.
>>
>>109806128
>Your playspace isnt that big, stop pretending

The massive benefit to wireless is the feasibility to play anywhere in your house, not playing in a space wider than cable length. The reason your playspace isn't that big is because you are confined to the same room your PC is in. Cables also need pulleys on the ceiling to be enjoyable which is definitely unacceptable in the larger shared spaces in homes even if you were willing to fuck with it.
>>
>>109811260
>The headset needs to do computer vision like slam tracking, eyetracking, and handtracking, sensor fusion with the IMUs with prediction
So? How do you think older headsets functioned 10 years ago without 2023 latest gen most expensive ARM CPUs?
> it's wireless
Laptop wifi modules are also wireless. You only need to interface with them.
> They couldn't delay an already slow to market headset
And yet they did. And now it got worse. Should've thrown away the qualcomm and RAM.
>>
>>109811346
>older headsets functioned 10 years ago
wired to the PC, every sensor/camera required a dedicated USB slot
>>
>>109811382
I'm talking about wireless-capable ones. Even those wired ones had plenty of sensor processing done on the headset, for latency reasons. They were sending data down USB to PC already processed, only so that PC would render next frames according to new positioning.

The Machine is too weak for most VR games. And this way devs get a super easy way to port their Quest games onto the Frame.

I stopped blueballing myself for this headset and just bought a mid-tier PC instead (arm and a leg, but the next 3-4 quarters will be even worse).

I kinda wonder, if I wanted a headset for organic sculpting, is there something cheap that can be hooked to a Linux desktop and bypass the need for a powerful ARM? If I have a shortlist of headsets, I could camp on resale sites and maybe nab one for relatively little cash.

I don't get sick even at 60 but refresh rate is so fucking nice in VR. It's not about how many frames you see objects or your arms move or anything gay like that. It's when you turn your head and its warm butter pouring on your smooth brain. Also reprojection allows for very high frame rates and there's no artifacts for pose rotation. If you can run the game at 72fps you can reproject to 144fps. 90fps would be 180. These aren't hard numbers to hit like 120 native.

Modern unreal engine games with UEVR is a case for the 5090. Some of those games a 5090 isn't enough.

Anything made for VR is much easier to run and doesn't benefit from a 5090 except MSFS or DCS or something.

There's a lot of VR Mods for games older than 10 years that also don't need a 5090. This is becoming the largest category of VR content now.

Cube was $1049 and valve wouldn't go to $999 which is a massive psychological difference, all over $50. But they didn't have the balls to say $1050 instead of $1049. Also this headset is around $1000+ and fucking straps and lightbleed nose pieces aren't included. There's no charger in the box, just a usb cable. There's no color passthrough when a $300 competitor has that. This all directs me to believe valve scraped at every way to make this cheaper once they locked in the mandatory feature list. And it won't fucking matter, the headset is still expensive and you are getting kiked. I would be amazed if it was $999. My guess is $1050-$1150 starting.

Valve has good support and no subscription bs though

Why does Valve keep releasing stuff at the worst possible time?
>>
>>109817030
>Oh yeah? Here's a moved goalpost, but don't you dare move the goalpost

So when are we switching the criteria from "must be wireless" to "must have a valve branding on it"
>>
>>109817080
They fucked the dog and it bit them on the ass, just like with the cube.
All of this shit was announced and teased years before RAMageddon. And while they have no control over that, it wouldn't have hit them as hard if they didn't fuck the dog
>>
>>109817033
Why would you even need this shit? meme AR applications?
>>
>>109817116
So you don't get scared by the black and white pass through image when you're looking for your dilation rod
>>
>>109816921
What is this comparing
>>
>>109817089
Nope. Doesn't need to be valve branded. Just needs to run regular open linux with an accessible desktop environment. Let's hear it.

meme AR (demos + porn), and spatial video recording for shit like gaussian spalling (basically 3d scanning)
it's extremely high quality

>>
>>109817159
What happened to them being black and white? Is the system color grading the image for you? That's kinda an interesting solution I guess
>>
>>109817193
You can buy a $150 module to upgrade to color passthrough. It also lets you record 3d photos and videos and make gaussian splats.
>>
>>109817200
Oh ok. Interesting how many people are interested in having the color pass through cameras, it's not really within my use case.
>>
>>109817134
>needs to run regular open linux

Why? That's practically the same as "valve branding" and its a deliberate goalpost you set yourself. Like i said, get a better argument
>>
>>109817042
Damn those are pretty serious. What's this about a subscription?
>>109817064
>wired
Non issue for me but the rest are significant
>>
>>109817220
>What's this about a subscription?
They charged you like $500 for the hardware and you had to pay the rest (like $600) as a subscription fee, i think at first you had to pay monthly and if you didn't they disabled your headset remotely. Then they switched to a one time payment for the "subscription", and then they stopped doing it because it was fucking illegal to begin with and only there so yo uhad to pay the import duties for $500 not for $100 or something like that
>>
>>109817208

>>
>>109817249

I can use wired headsets on linux, but that's now a problem all of a sudden because the frame is out. The requirement is that the headset must be wireless or gtfo. Okay then, i can stream from linux to any popular standalone (Pico, Quest, PlayForDream, Vive Focus) with steamlink or wivrn but that's not good enough either. No bro, it doesn't have the magic eyetracked sauce, it doesn't count. Oh, foveated encoding is available on steamlink now? Yeah but it has to run linux onboard or it doesnt count, bro. Somehow it has to conveniently tick the specific set of boxes that only the frame has or its a no-go. If i said the only sane choice for a headset is one that runs VisionOS, how many examples would you be able to give me?

What is the likelihood of somebody finding a bypass for this bullshit?
>>
>>109817344
I don't always want to stream. I want to play lightweight vr games in different rooms of my house on a relatively open operating system. I want to be able to open a desktop web browser or a terminal or whenever the fuck program I feel like on it. Apparently that's some crazy foreign concept to you.
>>
>>109817390
The bypass already exists. It's called buying it from someone else at a marked up price.
>>
>>109817481
I was referring to the device itself. Is it possible to gain root without once logging in on the device?
>>
I got on the list maybe 5 minutes after it went live. We'll see how it goes.

I was very concerned it was going to be over 2k for even the base model.
>>
>>109817200
So either their $150 add-on camera is shit, or the Frame's display stack is shit. Amazing what you can do for 2-3x the price of a Quest

These are all things you can already do with WayVR when connected to a PC. Ironically that seems to be a foreign concept to you because it wasnt made by the actual FOSS comunity instead of valve
>>
>>109817511
I was definitely not on the 1.5k+ doomposting side but I expected 1.1-1.2k for a long time
a week before the drop I made my final 1049 prediction and was right (at least here in euro)
I almost thought I'd overshoot since some of the rumors were more optimistic but alas.
Signed up for the 256gb
>>
>>109817532
Woah cool!! WayVR lets me run linux programs directly on the hmd without streaming and bypass any fuckery on the host os? Thanks bro, canceling my frame reservation now
>>
I'm hoping the battery life issues is down to software/OS optimisation and could improve, at least a little.
Not like magical levels, but at least match the quest.
>>
>>109817560

Same
>>
>>109817568
linus is just plain retarded and idk how gn managed to fuck up
a dev said they got over 2 hours while streaming and I think Tested says you can stay hooked up indefinitely
>>
>>109817613
>idk how gn managed to fuck up
they put it to charge at 11W for some reason instead of the max
>>
>>109817560
>it NEEDS to be done without streaming

There is no point in arguing about this, you come into this thread with a store lottery reservation and a solid opinion on this already. Just stop trying to pass it off as the only way to enjoy linux on a vr headset
>>
>>109817653
It is the only way to enjoy linux on a vr headset without bringing along a second linux computer lmao
>>
>>109817206
I don't have much use for it either, but if one of the Frames selling points is that it can be used like a computer on your face, you would think that the best pass through experience would be a priority
>>
>>109817685
>second linux computer

So android headsets are now also considered linux computers? Good to know
>>
>>109817741
Doesn't even need to be linux, just need to be able to access most of the source code, block spying and not have artifical restrictions on which desktop programs can run. A freebsd headset would be great, but no, no existing android headset passes this test.
>>
Can you hot swap the battery in the back for the Steam Frame? That's the only way I can imagine when partially justifying the battery life.

>>109817900

at least not yet, they've been working on a different strap that has hot-swappable batteries + index-style audio, we didn't know if they were still working on it but most reviewers got told they in fact are still working on it

Can your Quest 3 stream PC games with zero latency with foveated streaming?
>>
>>109816615
It's actually cheaper than I was expecting.
For the amount of features it has, and considering the RAMageddon, it could be way worse.

>>109818154

Alyx is a pretty heavy game for that kind of hardware, so honestly just over an hour running it locally sounds realistic.
Anyone try any battery pack tests yet?
>>
>>109817532
I love WayVR but it desperately needs QoL upgrades
>>
>>109818507
>Anyone try any battery pack tests yet?
nope, but the battery is about 22Wh so with a battery pack you can easily double the playtime
>>
>>109818236

I think they're deliberately eating a little of the cost of the 256GB SKU to make it not look as bad, hoping to make up for the difference with 60$ accessories
>>
>>109818408
Pushing 3.5 hours on PCVR bears the fuck out of Quest 3. You're lucky to get the advertised 2
>>
>>109816917

I do. They get very sticky.

valve having its midlife crisis because selling cosmetic microtransaction dogshit isn't filling the void anymore lol
>>
>>109818038
nta
Well I mean I'm sure they wont stop anyone from programming their own software to control and use the headset, but you can't really blame them for prioritizing their ecosystem first.
>>
>>109818889
>prioritizing their ecosystem first
Bullshit. This isn't about "prioritizing," they did it with the Deck and Machine. You can access root of both of those devices without signing in. They just didn't do it with the Frame because the Overton window for VR devices doesn't require them to. Valve niggers can get off free without any bad PR with this and they know it.

And still, you'll have Valve shills start making up excuses why its warranted for some retarded backwards reason. At this point Vavle fanboys no better than Nintendo man-children.

Valve doesn't lose or have to do shit by giving this option besides coercing some users into accepting their dogshit terms. Their marketing is tantamount to fraud.

It's not about money or technical issues. This is about control.
>>
>>109817030
The only other one that exists that I know of costs 5000 dollars and isn't for gaming and is built with he most anemic hardware imaginable, it does have actual kindo station wagon tier wood paneling tho.

>>109817532
We are talking about on-device.

Why should we care if it's on-device or not?
>>
>>109819171
I mean, in terms of resolution the steam frame add-on mogs even the AVP (see >>109817143), it's actually quite impressive the quest looks as good as it does

If they did add the option they haven't mentioned it and that video is still false advertising; although admittedly better than the seeming fraud.

>>
>>109820111
>>109815771
frame load balances between your wireless network and through a private wifi network
so hypothetically you don't need the dongle at all if you have some absurd WiFi 7 ubiquiti setup in your house and can just stream your video games from your PC from one side of the house to the other
>>
>>109817505
Give it a few months and you will have your other spins, It was the same with the Eck
