Is doomscrolling Tiktok, YT shorts, social media or whatever worse than spending hours on imageboard?

Pic related was before IA was a thing btw, keep that in mind.

Also is digital wellbeing a /g/ topic?
>>
>Is doomscrolling Tiktok, YT shorts, social media or whatever worse than spending hours on imageboard?
Yes, although it does function as a way to feel like you've ""socialized"" or ""learned"" something, the aftermath of visiting dead imageboards, filled with bots or underage indians is a sense of wasted time

>Also is digital wellbeing a /g/ topic?
Digital wellbeing is avoiding /g/ and any other website in its entirety unless its to access offline media and resources.

No. 4chan is to Tiktok as mexican brick weed from the 90s is to ultra concentrated THC out of a gravity bong. yes it's mostly shitposts and trolling BUT
>very strong legacy culture for media recommendations. many boards are effectively frozen in time at 2010-2015 (lol) instead of being swept up by current thing
>site layout has not changed in 25 years. hostile to phoneposting without a custom client/browser
>no registration required
>no content algorithm manipulating your experience. if you post something then everybody will see it.
>no likes. posts and threads are displayed by default in chronological order, giving equal importance. controversial posts are not hidden or removed (usually...)
>no infinite scrolling. set number of allowed active threads per board
>bans are appealable. mods can be talked to directly. creator actually used to regularly participate in threads with all the normal people
>threads have built in limit on size and the time they are allowed to lay dormant

the real problem is that these are all from 4chan being a legacy website that admins have run on autopilot for the past decade. 4chan isn't a tastemaker or primary exporter of web culture anymore. it's downstream of twitter, tiktok, yt, instagram, etc. so all the toxic sludge they dump into the stream inevitably makes its way to 4chan to poison it as well. the web as a whole is ruined b/c of centralization and algorithmic walled gardens

it's more or less the same kind of skinner box where you have these tactile things that you keep clicking/tapping for more dopamine. yes short form video is worse because at least you are reading something (of dubious value) here and you're not getting directly mind-controlled by a hyper-personalized recommendations algorithm, but it's not really that much better.

>phoneposting requires a custom client
phones are just cancer, apparently the hasidic Jews use kosher phones with nothing but voice, I'd love a phone with just text/calling. Custom apps were my downfall

t. Used to browse way too much, now just occasionally, but still have a pass so I can dump porn faster

4chan was one of the first to (accidentally) create an addictive algorithm that prioritizes slop
>OPs with images allows for eyecatching images to guide your brain
>controversial and divisive posts, trolling and bait get bumped
>on a high-speed board (in the mid-to-late-2010s) every refresh of page 1 is a fresh dopamine hit
>any OP that isn't digested within 3s gets significantly less traffic and is archived within the hour
This all combines into what made it the meme factory of its time - if an image or catchphrase in the OP isn't instantly recognizeable it just doesn't gain any foodhold.
It's also what created /pol/ and allowed it to invade the enitre site - trite one-liners that appeal to preconcieved notions are easy to digest and spread.
Though, the above mostly applies to high-speed boards. Slower boards are more like your average forum, and I think there's a sane equilibrium of activity, not too boring, not too addictive.

That said, I still think it's less bad than "modern" social media algorithms. It's predictable and actively prevents creating individual social bubbles (except some individual boards and sometimes generals). This makes it easy to learn how it affects people, and also simple to figure out what happened, when, and why, through archives. Nothing is splintered depending on where the algorithm places people, and it's impossible for an echo chamber to grow very big before it's discovered. It's as transparent about its mechanics as can be. All of this combined also allows you to weaponize yourself to avoid the things you want to avoid.

Oh shit they have a talk/text only flip phone for $100, when this phone inevitable breaks I think I might see if they are still available. Thanks

just don’t use custom apps, I only use 12 apps on my goiPhone
I even uninstalled Notes, you can write in the description of an image in the Photos app instead
I have 4 in the dock because OCD, the other 8 stay out of sight and out of mind in the next home screen
fuck that app library bs
it’s pretty comfy tbdesu, I turned it into an actual phone meant to just get things done

Wouldn't that be like 2channel since that is the predecessors to 4chan? All 4chan did was expose the exact imageboard format to an English audience.
>>
>>109801627
2channel has always been a text only board. The only way to post images is via links. Futabachan is the imageboard predecessor to 4chan, and is a lot more niche than 2channel. 2channel used to be one of the biggest sites in Japan in the Web 1.0 era, so it also had more normalfag users. Futabachan culture is more similar to 4chan culture, a lot more countercultural, crass humour, lolis etc., but I don't think the cultural impact of Futabachan in Japan is anywhere near the impact of 4chan on broader, international internet culture

This is the only social media I use and I want to be free of digital addiction
I'd ideally like to go back to 2008 tier usage, for fun and sometimes, but not all my time online
Would permabanning me be the right choice? What do lads?
>>
I've used

>Various forums for 23+ years
>Youtube for 20 years
>4chan and Twitter for 16+ years
>Reddit for 13+ years

I can say with high confidence that 4chan is one of the less brainrot inducing platforms, at least from the perspective of distractions and attention spans (if you let the shitposting, insults, and politicization get to you then that's it's own problem)

Twitter is the worst that I've used, both from the attention/distraction angle and in terms of how bad it is for discussions and toxicity and misinformation.

>>109803475
4chan and other imageboards are not social media, we don't even have accounts. More broadly, i'd argue that you can largely divide discussion and user content focused platforms into forums or social media like this:

>Forums: Have threads/posts as central avenue of discussion and interaction, which are generally organized into sections, boards etc by topic
>Social Media: Has user profile pages as ventral avenue of discussion and interaction, with content accessed via a algorithmic feed

In this system, Traditional Forurms, Imageboards like 4chan, and Reddit are forums; wheras Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram etc are social media

>4chan isn't a tastemaker or primary exporter of web culture anymore. it's downstream of twitter, tiktok, yt, instagram, etc
Totally untrue. I always think this is true, or is becoming true, then I notice little things. Everyday language is shaped by 4chan, the most relevant recently adopted phrase globally across all media and culture is 'AI slop', which started here as an extension of goyslop. I laugh when I see journalists using it.

Little things like that come up a lot, we are just desensitized to them. I don't know what it is about this place, it has a certain power that never seems to die.

We were the internet, we are the internet.

4chan went down for months, if you remember. We were all permabanned then. What did you do when that happened? You will just do that again if you get permab& from here. What you really need is a better hobby.

depends on which one. /mu/ and /x/ are full of just mentally defective 'people' and scrolling those is, i think genuinely worse than the vidslop shit. to be fair, i have no social media and only watch normal youtube videos where i can actually learn something (usually cooking), im just on this board looking for iem recs
