I just find it hilarious how he never finished handmade hero despite being actively paid for working on it.
Maybe reinventing the wheel over and over isn't a productive use of ones time?

Give a man a game engine and he'll make a game. Teach a man to make a game engine and he'll never stop improving his engine.
>>
>>109801504
In retrospect handmade hero was still extremely successful in that it taught an entire generation of programmers the style casey thinks is best and those programmers are now shipping actual software (which tends to be high quality!)

he made like 650 episodes and the "purchase" was a donation to support the series with the game being available if ever finished. the donors still have access to the source code and game assets.

Look I don't hate him and I don't think it's a terrible course or that he's a grifter, but the adage I posted still rings true.

I just don't agree with his philosophy of learning everything under the hood before you can ship a good game. If you're spending time studying the x86 branch predictor to shave off a nanosecond off your runtime while your game is an empty white void you're doing it wrong. The game just won't be created.

thats not his thing. he's a game ENGINE guy who is educating people on low level things. he's not trying to switch people from unity or unreal. the whole point of handmade hero was to show how to code the ENGINE. any idiot can download RPG maker and have a better game than what he had after a fucking decade

>t the adage I posted still rings true.
Not really. You posted an inane, thought-terminating meme. And in fact, you have drunk your own kool-aid so hard the bias prevents you from offering and actual decent and well-informed cricitism of Handmade Hero.

>I just don't agree with his philosophy of learning everything under the hood before you can ship a good game.
But you haven't made any coherent argument against it (or even demonstrated you understand it).
There are something like 1,000-1,300 hours of Handmade Hero in 600ish videos. A real career spans tens of thousands of hours. A thousand hours spent learning low-level fundamentals is a drop in the bucket in the long run, if you're serious about it. And hell, you can learn and enormous amount in just a couple hundred hours, especially if you skip around past things you already know.

And HHH is not religiously prescriptive. Muratori never advocates that everyone should always build everything from scratch every time. It's only complete retards who hear that message and argue against it.
>>
>>109803138
Yeah but that is what you're arguing against, retard. You're arguing against an imagined "philosophy," one that isn't even accurate as far as what he actually promotes, and also happens to be a philosophy behind other game engines being made and published. You are an utter brianlet who doesn't even understand the shit babbling out of your mouth.
>>
>>109804032
>But you haven't made any coherent argument against it
In software engineering, you start with a problem, and your goal is to make something that solves it.
To make this possible, you use abstractions. They make the whole thing manageable. However, coding is just a means to an end.
Guys like muratori choose to ignore this. They don't care about solving problems. There was a podcast video of him talking about his "views" on premature optimization, and he made such a huge ass out of himself I believe it has a rightful place in every cringe compilation. Then he gave a 3 hour rambling performance about it without a thesis. He seems like the type of guy who has nothing to say but wants to appear profound.
>>
For a supposedly skilled programmer, it's strange that he could only make a living selling lessons on youtube instead of making a lot more money working for someone else or start his own consulting business or video game company.
>>
>>109803076
Unfortunately, thinking those who did rarely can teach is also unfortunately true. Pedagogy is a craft like any other, and expecting someone to hang up their professional hat and learn to teach well for mere pennies means we rarely get the kindly old master.craftsmen in our classrooms. I'm sure LLMs will fix this though, right?
>>
>>109804032
I did create a good argument against it, let me explain for you.

>There are something like 1,000-1,300 hours of Handmade Hero in 600ish videos. A real career spans tens of thousands of hours.

I'm not taking away from the breadth and depth of handmade hero. There is good info there.

>A thousand hours spent learning low-level fundamentals is a drop in the bucket in the long run, if you're serious about it. And hell, you can learn and enormous amount in just a couple hundred hours, especially if you skip around past things you already know.

A thousand hours is a drop in the bucket? Dude, think about all the game prototypes you could make if you were working with an engine. 1000 hours is a considerable amount of time. Even just 100 hours you could have a game prototype up and running. Instead you argue one should learn low level concepts that have nothing to do with the important part of a game. It being fun.

I get it, people on /g/ like the tech. It's cool. I specialized in low level CS when I was in college. But let's be honest now. Because your loading screen is longer because you use didn't autistically optimize, doesn't automatically make it a good game. The important part of a game is the fun.

Do you play games? I do. A lot of the games I find fun and do well are artists/writers who pick up programming and slop some spaghetti code just to see their vision come to life. I can assure you many games you play are filled with devs who don't understand every low level detail (or really have that much of an idea) of what the CPU and GPU is doing at every given moment.

And to tie it back to the original point, it's because you spend all your time learning everything is the reason your game won't ship. Learn when you encounter a problem working towards your goal, don't try and learn everything from the bottom up.
>>
i don't buy that writing a generic 3d "engine" takes this long
niggas in the 90s were banging them out within months, console games were essentially one shot engines
>>
>>109804429
To add to it my points
Who do you think has a better likelihood of making a fun game. Someone who has build several games in an engine? or someone who built one game with a custom engine?
>>109804131
>Guys like muratori choose to ignore this. They don't care about solving problems

This, I really don't believe he is interested in making games. He's just passionate about low level CS concepts.

So why take his advice on making games at all? Why is it you absolutely need to learn all those concepts? Nerd cred? to brag on /g/ about being a real gamedev and not those dumb engine users.

It's productive procrastination in the end, because it's actually easier to worry about the branch predictor flushing the instruction pipeline on a mispredict then it is to make a fun game people like.
>>
>>109802031
i think some people just like dwelling on (as you say, functionally irrelevant) efficiencies because it's procrastinating without feeling like procrastinating.
game development is much more of a right-sided activity than it is a left-sided one, especially in our time when tools are as mature and available as they are. no one cares if you use gamemaker or rpgmaker or a cli written in ruby if the game is fun and they want to play it. some of the most successful games of all time have notoriously spaghetti code behind them.

/g/ likes tech. Muratori does not show tech, he shows he doesn't understand much about programming or game development, but thinks he does.
He explains things at a high school grad level, which is useful to people with an IQ too low to learn on their own. But then he keeps everything at that level not for didactic reasons but because he doesn't know any better.
He's never made a game, so what does he have to say about the topic anyway.
>>
>>109805105
He absolutely did NOT popularize immediate mode GUIs. Look into the history of dear imgui instead, which is the immediate mode gui that popularized immediate mode guis. You will see that the inspiration is totally removed from muratori.
>>
>>109805242
Nope, he was an intern on some tools for games, namely bink and granny. But he was never in charge of either, nor significantly involved in their design or development.
I wouldn't go as far as >>109805078 but then again, 'made' is a tall word for what his real contrib was as well.
>>
>>109804491
I wrote several engines because I'm the prototypical engine dev who can't keep it together long enough to make a game with the engine.
It takes about 2 weeks to get the whole thing done with all the usual optimizations, but excluding the gameplay-specific code (so there is an AI system, but only simple "test" behavior modules written yet).

https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/wiki#about-the-imgui-paradigm

Immediate mode GUI

Graphical user interfaces traditionally use retained mode-style API design,[2][5] but immediate mode GUIs instead use an immediate mode-style API design, in which user code directly specifies the GUI elements to draw in the user input loop. For example, rather than having a CreateButton() function that a user would call once to instantiate a button, an immediate-mode GUI API may have a DoButton() function which should be called whenever the button should be on screen.[6][5] The technique was developed by Casey Muratori in 2002.[6][5] Prominent implementations include Omar Cornut's Dear ImGui[7] in C++, Nic Barker's Clay[8][9] in C and Micha Mettke's Nuklear[10] in C.

There's no mention of "muratori" on the page except to link to his video.
https://github.com/ocornut/imgui/issues/7892
>In November 2008 I landed in Kyoto, Japan to start working at Q-Games and what would become PixelJunk Shooter. The in-house game editor used a useful but very crude, black and white looking UI system called "simgui", written by Atman Binstock. It is the first implementation of an IMGUI that I stumbled on. Atman used it for PixelJunk Racers for which he was the main programmer. The tech got used by PixelJunk Monsters and PixelJunk Eden (all great titles!).

Important:

>Atman at the time was friend with Casey Muratori, who is the person coining the term "IMGUI" with his seminal 2005 video “Immediate-Mode Graphical User Interfaces” and later on the Molly Rocket forum (2007 mirror, partial 2013 mirror).

tl;dr: Muratori's contribution was to popularize THE NAME "IMGUI" and NOT "the concept".

some time ago there was a thread about odin 1.0 announcement on hackernews, one guy just claimed shit like "oop and RAII is not a good fit for big software" and another guy simply asked how can you say, that and they got into a 2 month back and forth, and the original poster literally kept bringing his butt buddies as proof, ryan fluery, casey, john blow, the other guy was simply asked an actual proof to the claim that oop is actually bad for big software without baseless claims, eventually the original guy got into personal insults, the moment that happened the thread got deleted, the other guy was satisfyingly backing the fuck out.

if you're a big company bringing in fresh college grads who went into cs for the money and dont care about programming and think pointers are hard, the only way to build anything at scale is OOP (encapsulation especially) and RAII with strict/dogmatic code review OR GC. its very easy to see, that when things are organized in a somewhat standardized way, it would be much easier to make rotating employees in a big company working in a big codebase up to speed, its not that imperative/procedural style is bad, but its free form in a way, and popularity of java and other OOP stuff, happened at a time when things were getting big, companies were no longer a group of few devs working for long time together, and eve things like linux kernel can you really call it imperative, another easy to see proof is linux and ffmpeg huge codebase, even if it is all written in C they pretty much created an OOP like code organization too,

>It's productive procrastination in the end, because it's actually easier to worry about the branch predictor flushing the instruction pipeline on a mispredict then it is to make a fun game people like.
This is what it boils down to.
The point of game development is to make fun games. There's no recipe for that that anybody can follow. Those who can actually do it will focus on making a game, and the tools and engines are secondary.
When it comes to being a game developer, Muratori can't hold a candle to random fujos who are banging out games in their free time people actually play.

>Legendary American computer programmer

That sounds a bit biased and written by a fanboy or himself. Ok maybe it's something they give to a lot of notable programmers?

>John D. Carmack II[1] (born August 21,[a] 1970)[1] is an American computer programmer and video game developer
>Linus Benedict Torvalds[a] (born 28 December 1969) is a Finnish and American software engineer who is the creator and lead developer of the Linux kernel since 1991.
>Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (September 9, 1941 – c. October 12, 2011) was an American computer scientist.
Huh...

If you watch a few episodes you'll see he is surprisingly direct. In the Unity era it feels like he is a performance procrastinator but in his time that is just how you created games. Writing the game engine for your game can actually result in a product that is shipped faster. Why? Because you don't have to write a general purpose game engine, just the one that your game requires.

This actually made me curious where handmade hero left off. Couldn't find any gameplay on the last day but found some in the days previous.

BEHOLD the LEGENDARY computer programmer Casey Muratori's HANDMADE HERO after 657 days.
>>
>>109810005
after all this guys complaints about OOP I actually paid for Handmade Hero and downloaded the code to see what all the fuss was about and how this guy programmed
It's literally nothing, it's a small project that barely does anything
>>
>>109810005
Where is the gameplay part though?
>657 days
A competent game dev with experience could make that in Unity in 1-2 weeks. One without much experience could probably make it in 2-3 months tops.

Just for reference, Undertale shipped in around 2 years after the kickstarter campaign.

Gameplay?
Did you see the strange interpolation the hand was doing when he was jumping to the next tile? I think that's the immediate task at hand. Everything must be perfect and optimal before we jump to the next step.

How so? he has made game tools that are still used in AAA games to this day and he has been hired as a dev in multiple games, he just doesn't state that everytime so people dont know about it
>>
>>109810344
He was an intern on teams that made 2 tools that are indeed used by everyone.
He has never worked on games. He has, at best, "consulted" on them.
That's it.

It's a meme from the podcast he is a guest on. They keep calling him "legendary game programmer" and he has to repeat that he isn't. The meme is that when it's repeated enough, AI will eventually call him a legendary game programmer (and now especially when you edit wikipedia to say that).
>>
>>109810353
He was for example hired to work on the witness, to implement some features and greatly improve the performance. He wrote the code for that. How does that mean that he hasn't worked on games?

That's literally the opposite of the state goal.
In fact the point is literally to make a game, the engine is secondary BUT the game must be made "by hand" meaning using unity would not be kosher, but blending the game and engine in one is perfectly fine, as is... actually making the game instead of spending 5 months on GI when a noob can do it in a week.
>>
>>109813329
>spending 5 months on GI when a noob can do it in a week.
Do you actually know what GI is?
I don't see a noob figuring GI in a week, unless of course you are a jeet and naturally assume everyone is as retarded as you and uses AI

It's hilarious how many people defend Casey by saying this when making a full game was the explicitly stated purpose right from the start

indeed, you have never written anything and it shows
I have 3 listed games on Steam, and hundred of smaller projects/demos where I was testing ideas, systems, optimizations and etc. None of these demos have my name or anything that could potentially dox me
You are just a retarded larping jeet and I am glad you exposed yourself

>>
>>109813312
>the entire point of HH is making an engine, the game itself is secondary
No, the point of game development is making a fucking game for people to play. Nobody cares what engine a game was made in as long as it's fun.
Casey is telling people who want to compose and perform their original songs that they should spend years building a piano.
People like these never make anything useful.
>>
>>109813312
>honestly kinda impressive for an enginedev
No it really isn't. People vastly overestimate how hard it is to make a game engine, the graphics API does most of the hard work for you.
>>
>>109813947
it would be impressive for a beginner (no gamedev experience at all) working on it on and off as a hobby, but not for a guy who claims to be an authority on the subject.
>>
>>109814045
Not even. 6 months for someone who's never done that before but who knows how to program.
