Not an issue when outputting in anything above 16 bit(even if the audio is 16 bit).

>Above 16-bit, therefore negative pre-gain doesn't matter.
technically wrong. 24-bit output prevents −30 dB attenuation from becoming a huge loss of source resolution, sure. but it doesn't make attenuation free.
you're still operating the DAC ~30 dB below full scale, so its analog noise floor is ~30 dB closer to the signal. 'still above 16-bit' isn't the same thing as 'no dynamic-range loss.'
you're not losing five bits of the original 16-bit resolution just because you're outputting 24-bit but you're sacrificing ~30 dB of DAC referenced SNR/headroom, tho

Well I really like the CCA Trio, and figure that this might just be a cheaper more refined version of it. Even if it didn’t sound the same, I figure the EQ switches would get it close enough. I was wrong, but it was pretty cheap so who cares.

Zero 2 is great, though damn it’s a real sensitive IEM. 1/16 volume bars on an ipad is still too loud. Possibly slightly fatiguing, but once the volume is at a good level I think I could wear listen to music through them for hours without problem. The cable is kinda shit though.

add a low shelf at 100hz with +10db

I also can't get a good seal, I can't push them in deep enough because the nozzle base is too fat and doesn't extend out properly (compare it to the zero2s in the pic f.e.)
the good thing is, they don't seem to cause too much compression and stay comfortable for quite a while

zero2s are worlds ahead but the castors have pretty detailed treble while still being quite smooth, doesn't fatigue me at all

>wyvern abyss- 32 ohms 105dB/mW
>rw 3000- 16 ohms 113 dB/mW
>16 ohms 118 dB/mW
you have a ridiculously sensitive collection here and I wouldn't really put the blame on bad implementation of the DAC chip. it could be a fixed electrical noise voltage being amplified by very sensitive transducers, instead of noisy DAC.
it's probably both a source-noise issue and a sensitivity issue, but the sensitivity is what determines whether the source's noise becomes audible.
>>
>>109818054
unlikely to be a defective unit. this is expected behavior of a $10 SPV4040-based dongle paired with modern high-sensitivity IEMs. the low output impedance and PEQ storage are nice features for the price but the noise floor is simply not in the same league as an Apple dongle, a decent CS43131/CS43198 implementation, or anything with a measured residual noise under ~2–3 µV.
the higher-end Protocol Max is a completely different product aimed at much lower noise.
>>
>>109818219
nah fag the thing is cooked, i have a softears s01 and a fiio ka11, none produces any audible noise, cringeacle dongle is washed. didn't even bothered to test the peq feature.
>>
>>109818293
ok fag that's useful info, but I'm not wrong about you having very sensitive IEMs and your protocol micro seems to have worse audible noise performance than your reference dongles with those same sensitive loads. protocol micro seems to have a bad noise floor bc it's the most shit out of what you got and the sensitivity of your IEMs showed that.
>>
>>109818219
106dB/mW is the average IEM sensitivity, nothing ridiculous about that.
>>
>>109818571
did you average it out yourself? 118–118 dB/mW at 16 Ω absolutely puts you in very noise-sensitive territory. either way, if the exact same IEMs are silent on the KA11/S01 but hiss on the Protocol micro, that tells you the Protocol micro has a worse output noise floor. doesn't tell you that the SPV4040 DAC chip itself is the culprit. still need super sensitive IEMS to make it obvious, which was my point.

yeah, its due to twisting, Make sure u untwist them before use (it usually happens because u put away and take them in certain way that rotates them around 360 and after few times thats add up) and it should be good even with cheaper cables. 2,4,8 core cables it will be thicker but they can fail same as cheaper one, its just easier to notice that is twisted due to thicknes and lack of casing.

Honestly im suprised that the problem for some of u, my ocd makes even a single twist in a cable bother me so much that I have to untangle it.

So far, I have only bought earphones from the CitruxPlus brand. They're cheap and work relatively well. Unfortunately, the latest batches that have arrived in my country are very poor quality. In fact, I bought several pairs of cheap earphones from different brands, and they were all terrible. In the end, I decided to buy a pair of Tangzu Wan'er S.G. earphones. They will be my first "earphones for big boys."
Have I made the right choice, or will I barely notice the difference in quality? How high or low should I set my expectations?

If it still works it works, probably plug and socket got polished. Unless cable unplugs under force of his own weight it should be good and I wouldn't change anything. USBC is far easier to fuck than these sockets so I wouldn't recommend DSP cable but it's option. New 3.5 cable can be tighter but u never know how tolerances will be. I've had brand new headphones that had cables super loose, I bought cheapest and most dogshit sockets I could find on AliExpress and they are holding like crazy, I've used my old Shure cable for more than 10years and it still works ok. Sockets in my audio player are loose too, like some kind of friction fit instead of reassuring click at the end. It's just depends on your luck I guess

>>109825719
not even close. Chu 2 is the worst culprit and universally whined about for those issues. EA500LM isn't universally shat on for the same thing- one or two anecdotal incidents don't mean every single owner has the issue every single time. Nice bait tho.

With multiple drivers when your source has high output impedance(most mobos and phones) they will change the intended sound. And with multiple drivers there's usually bad drivers that will limit the EQ potential.

my theory - ur graphics card and power supply make so much electrical noise when under gaming load that it creeps thru usb cable into your dongle and fucks with analog signal. Do you have any usb hubs or usb ports on top of ur case (as far from graphics card as possible), i would try that. I would also went to windows audio settings and mess around with them but honestly if everything works under light loads and glitches under heavy loads I think other than buying normal desktop DAC/AMP that has its own power supply and better shielding u can't do too much.

Budget
$50

Intended use
Music only, portable, straight out of an iPod Classic 7th gen (no dongle/amp currently)

Frequency response preference and music examples
Aiming for something flat/neutral — not too familiar with other tunings so open to suggestions, but leaning away from bass-heavy or V-shaped stuff. I listen mostly to sludge/post-metal, industrial, and prog, so I'd like good instrument separation for dense, layered mixes without things turning muddy.

Past gear and your thoughts on them
Moondrop Chu 2 — like the build, but hate that the metal shell oxidizes/tarnishes over time. Sound is decent I guess, but they're starting to feel dated to me — I feel like something is missing/lacking but I can't quite pinpoint what it is.
