Is everywhere doing this? I can't believe this shit. If you buy a new laptop in Europe now they don't come with a charger it's sold separately
>>109819734to be honest this is a sacrifice I'm willing to make, fuck proprietary charging ports
>>109819778I agree but I wish we could have done something closer to magsafe.
>>109819734So use one of your many generic USB C chargers? >not all cables are equal! So buy a good one? Would you use the cheapest shittiest extension cord to charge an EV? No, you'd spend 30 seconds looking at the rating and buy one rated appropriately. The ultra high quality tested certified LTT cables are like $20. Any $10 Anker or UGreen will work fine. You just can't use the dogshit $1 cables at the Dollar General checkout. It's an easy problem to solve, you just have to not be a retard.
Faggot
>>109819734EU faggots in this thread will unironically say it's a good thing
if you somehow truly don't already have a usb-c charger then factor one into the cost of the laptop. it's not difficult
>>109819854we can't get to net zero with all these power cords
>>109819883True. So let's just buy the same thing but separately and for more money and still not get closer to net zero. That'll show em.
>>109819734You have to get 45W-60W chargers because the ones for phones and game consoles can't even do it. Buy a 60W supply once, for a little bit more money, then you can fast charge anything. No point in paying for a charger that only charges phones or Nintendos.
>>109819824>So buy a good one? Would you use the cheapest shittiest extension cord to charge an EV?There are so faggots acting like the shittiest cable somehow can't do 60W I can only assume they are in the 3rd world getting sold iron core USB C cables with 2 conductors and being told its premium
>>109819734How are they supposed to sell laptops that pull more than 240 (realistically, 125) watts?
>>109820413Afaik the law is written where laptops are required to have USB-C as an option rather than strictly being the only charging method.USB-C can technically be used for 240W but this requires some redesign because it's 48V so as a laptop vendor if you want to still use 20V, you can provide a 240W proprietary charger, but the laptop must also charge off a USB-C port in some capacity.
>>109820687and this is bad for reasons
>>109819820there's no industry pressure to make a common charging port but plenty of pressure to make a common data portthe data concerns won over the charging concernsUse Qi charging.
>>109819734This is already the standard for all new non-toy non-chinkshit laptops anyway. I can't even remember the last time I saw a new laptop with a barrel charger.
>>109820855they release barrel jackets every time the power envelope creeps past what USB is capable of deliveringcan't wait until they can't come out with a laptop capable of eating up more than 240W of power
I recall being paranoid about somehow charging my G14 with USB-C when I had it. Had an issue where you could fry the port if you were charging with USB C and the regular barrel charger at the same time. And then there was battery health concerns since it ignored whatever lower battery limit you set. I can't recall if it did passthrough charging whenever the battery was full either
>>109819778what the FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT NIGGER????THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT NOT SHIPPING A POWER BRICK WITH A LAPTOP THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH A COMMON CHARGING PORT
>>109819734>buy a decent 2x usb c, 1x usb a 100w charger>use it for all your devices dor the next decadeStick your shitass charger that came with the laptop and that was as cheaply made as humanly possible up your ass
>>109819820Sony phones had that a long time ago. I used it myself and it was neat. Then they had to take it off due to legal reasons. You can thank Apple jews that it's not widespread. They can't let anyone else have that. They get away with it too because nobody bothers to vote with their wallet.
>>109819734I bought a lenovo earlier this year, it got USB C charging instead of the retarded lenovo connector, and it got a charger in the box>feels good manAFAIK it's only Applel that currently requires you to buy a separate charger
>>109819734Sounds like a good change. My small and light Dell laptop came with a charger with a barrel plug, but can also charge over USB C. The 65W charger it came with is an annoyingly bulky brick with the cord going to the laptop permanently attached, so if it gets damaged I need a new brick. My USB C phone charger can also output 65W, is much smaller, and if the cord gets damaged, I just buy a new USB C-to-C wire.
>>109819911I can charge my laptop with the switch 2 charger, and vice versa. But who cares, laptop plugs into the monitor at home and at work
>>109819911I got a Motorola phone in 2023 and it came with a 68 W charger that has worked with everything I've tried plugging it into. I look forward to a future where I only need to pack 1 pocket sized charger and one type of cord when I travel.
>>109820413the Gaymen labtop I got(work gave it to me as it was cheaper than the normal ones we order lol) get around this easily. Basically they have a 65w USB-C port somewhere on then that allows for charging and use with an ultra low power state and disables the external GPU. I think the one I have needs a 100w USB-C delivery to run where it sets the proc in some .86ghz running state, no charging the battery sometimes actively discharges, but its still usable for office applications. My guess is most laptop providers will just work with some C state or P state CPU's have to run in some ultra low power state to provide a working product but recommend a typical wall charger.
>>109819820USB-C magsafe adapters, there's actually decent ones if you don't buy the cheapest shit.
>>109819734Absolutely based if you ask me, I already have several 67W chargers just sitting in the drawer anyways.
>>10982150567w is too little to use the laptop while it's charging.
>>109820687No real reason to use 20V over 48V, and if there would be adding an efficient 48V->20V DC-DC converter internally wouldn't add much space or heat.>>109820855Gaming laptops or mobile workstations can suck up a lot more power and they use barrel connectors. It just works.
So... When are we going to see USB C supporting 96V power delivery?I want to feed my hypothetical future 480W laptop :(
>>109819734lol so how these rtx 5090/5080 laptops that require a 350-400W power brick are going to work? (the usb-c spec only goes up to 240W)
>>109819734>If you buy a new laptop in Europe now they don't come with a charger it's sold separatelyif you're buying a new laptop then you have your old charger retard
>>109819778barrel connectors are more durable
>>109819734I bought a GAN 65W charger that's 1/4 the size of my laptop'a USB-C charger and has a USB-A port on it.Much more worthwhile.
>>109819734So what if you have a gaming laptop with a gpu? There's no way that's gonna be powered by USB-C.What fucking moron made this law? They clearly don't know what they're doing.C is probably one of the worst to switch to too because all my C devices tend to have port issues. Thus creating MORE e-waste.That being said, proprietary ports are also cancer.
That being said, I hated this era of chargers where every phone had a unique charger for no clear reason.I still have a box of this shit.
Wait, so AI centres get now power restrictions, but YOU get power restrictions indirectly through this shit?Sounds like an anti-trust/corruption issue there, ngl.More power to technocrats.
>>109822034What if you sold the old laptop WITH its charger? What if you keep the old laptop alongside the new laptop? Think retard think. Funny how frog posters are always profoundly retarded.
>>109822092>get now powerno power*
>>109822097what if my beard were made of green spinach
>>109822177thanks for demonstrating that you are clinically retarded
>>109822097buy a bundle of half a dozen 65w lenovo/dell/etc usb-c chargers off ebay for 50 bucks, have a decent quality charger available at every spot you use any laptop
>>10982221765w can't charge laptops while in use. 100w can't do it while a gpu is in use. Barrel plugs are no problem. Your suggestion creates tons of ewaste thereby destroying the point.
>>109819734USB PD is more than sufficient for any laptop.
>>109822229>Your suggestion creates tons of ewasteif you intentionally interpret it like a retard, sureit doesn't "create" anything to buy old chargers that already exist which were originally bundled with laptops that got run over, coffee spills, etcif you need more wattage then buy higher wattage ones
>>109822229>GPU >laptop Do people really still do this?
>>109822279Where are the used chargers when new ones aren't getting made anymore except if there is outside demand for them?
>>109822310Sadly yes. But realistically it's needed for some work, like CAD or meme AI.
>>109821617If your laptop needs more, you're doing something wrong.
>>109822229See >>109822416It's a laptop. It's supposed to be low power, portable with long battery. Literally why Apple Silicon is unironically so good. >>109822382Then you don't need a laptop. Desktop replacement maybe.
>hurr durr where can I get 300W PD USB charger???Ever heard of Amazon? Buy a good one and you never need to buy another one again. My power bank even does over 100W.
>>109822422>need to do things on the go>worked for over a decade no problem>2026 comes along>noooooo you shouldn't be able to do that nooooThe absolute state
>>109822422>>109822416Macs can't charge without 140w (default magsafe)
>>109822043thiswatch as we all go back to this in a few years
>>109822460I charge my M3 MBA over USB-C from my Dell monitor rated for 65W. Charges fine even when under load. I haven't even used the Magsafe charger once with it, still in the box. No idea what retard shit you're snorting.
>>109822451>laptops need to use at least 120w and run hot and loud with barely any battery lifeyeah, you'd be surprised once you come out of 2006 and enter 2026 anon
Good. I have a bag with like 30 chargers and cables in it that have come along with various things. Ever since they started making chargers standard, I only have 1 charger on my desk and I charge whatever I need with it.Next we need to legally obsolete USB-A ports. We'll have to use A-to-C adapters for a while, but after that we can just use a single connector for every device.
>>109822466You've clearly never done it and are just shitposting or your idea of load is a screensaver.
>>109819734the ewaste thing is so bs kek, people arent jsut gonna throw usb c chargers away while everything is using it and will do so for the next like 10+ years, just a waye for manufacturers to sell it to you at extra cost isntead of bundling it with the machine. fuck apple for starting this
>>109822471You just said that gpu's should not be allowed to work today even though it's always worked until now.
>>109822043I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. 5A though 4 0.3mm pins seems completely reasonable.
>>109822422Apple silicon is good because it doesn't scale? That's a new one I'll give you that.
>>109819734>>109822609No one thought this through except people trying to fuck consumers.
>>109822259Except usb-c controllers and ports have way higher failure rates than a simple barrel jack.
>>109822471You've clearly never used a mbp lmao. Any load and the fan makes it sound like an airplane taking off, and depending on os version it overheats like shit or blasts fans under very little load. And let's not forget the throttling. Battery life is only good because it sleeps aggressively. Disable this because you need it to do a task for an extended period of time and suddenly it's worse than 2006 laptops.
>>109822076And that's a good thing
>>109822378The fact that you can buy 5 of them for the price of 1 new one from Lenovo means that the supply is massively higher than the demand. If we manage to use up all the extra chargers rotting in IT dept closets and ewaste recyclers that seems like a win to me.I don't think this law will have the effect of reducing ewaste though. I think it will actually increase the number of laptops that get fucked by morons buying $5 exploding dogshit chargers from walmart and frying their whole computer straight into the ewaste bin
>>109819734Gut check is that this is good in principle, but I'm not entirely convinced if a single port design is the most superior, durable and cost effective thing for both data and power transfer, especially if you think about laptop charging power. My experience with USB-C phones has been pretty good so far, 8 years of Honor 8 had no issues whereas micro-USB was nothing but problems. However, I have a kind of appreciation for those robust, round charging cables/ports that you can just jam in and that stay there no matter how hard you tug. Maybe they could have just standardized that. Simple power cables also guarantee no USB security risk, which you can't say about USB charging ports.
>>109819734uhhhh don't laptops need a power supply? or does anything work now?
>>109820413by using two ports
>>109822758Yeah, I agree with all that.
What's next, refrigerators on USB-C?
>>109822229This.There are already tons of normalfags who charge their huge ass batteries with a shitty 1A charger.Fast charging technology is advancing rapidly. The EU should require manufacturers to give a charger with their devices instead of ripping off goyim and telling them "and that's a good thing".
