It's normal. When I was a 13 year old in the Windows 95 era I was super fascinated with Amigas and sperged out on them. It's also normal to 'look up' to adults and seek their approval. I became fascinated with punk rock music but wanted to like older stuff like The Misfits and Black Flag that the cool guys who could buy beer liked.

I was born in 85 and I can tell you that A lot of the early 90s and into the late 00s was like the 80s sure stuff changed a bit but it was like the 80s just died. The thing is most of the shit I grew up with even in the 00s was watching shit from the 80s. Difference with zoomers is that they have none of that they don't really have shit re-running on nickelodeon or whatever watching. as far as i know computers still support external usb storage and protocols. now the 'hdd' doesn't even need a power cable.

As an older zoomer I always loved Windows 7 era tech. Not even just for aesthetic, even though that's a large part of it. Thinkpads where doing Framework better than Framework before it was even a thing. I had a small archive of shows and music I torrented. I was experimenting with piracy through IRC/XDCC and hacking the graphical shell with bb4win. I was even writing scripts using Cygwin as an alternative to powershell.
It was an operating system that could appeal to both power users and total retards. It was advanced enough that it could do anything, but simple enough that there was a coherent UI language and design. Unlike Windows 11 in which the start menu has a hard dependency on a botnet that's a reskin of another botnet.
But I guess the "Fruitiger Aero" trend is just an example that the aesthetics are what's truly remembered. A screenshot is timeless, people rarely have an excuse to use the actual OS to remember why it was so great.
As the world got more gay I retreated further into tinkering. To this day I use a similar configuration on Linux. I use a minimal distro with Fluxbox, Xfe and AppImages - held together by a collection of scripts. It's basically the same experience just more stripped down and I have to force Linux into submission every week. I am free but I'm alone.
I dream of an alternate timeline where we never diverged from true technological progress. A world where technology is simple, but has endless possibilities. User experience would be at the forefront, expressing a clean and healthy design. We would have specialized devices for specific usecases, instead of streamlining everything into a few devices trying to do everything (fucking smartphones/tablets). We were promised this world and told "learn to code"
