Any Brother printer is usually good and well supported on Linux. I'm on my third Brother printer in the last 20 years. The first two did A LOT of work during school and uni, the third hardly gets used at all these days but there was zero config required when I bought it.

The only slight annoyance that I recall is that it can't scan directly to Linux, so the workaround I used at the time was having it scan to an SMB network share I exposed on my Linux system instead. Quite possible this problem has long since been resolved.

It all depends of course on what you're doing with it, but unless you're printing a lot of color images very frequently, you probably don't need an inkjet. I had one that my parent's gave me when I moved out, and the ink would dry up in a few months and need a new $70 box of cartridges regardless of how much or how little you used it.I bought a Brother laser printer off Ebay several years back, and spent less for the printer, shipping and one cartridge that will probably end up lasting 7 years or more when all is said and done, than I did on a year's worth of ink for that inkjet. Plus the fact that it required no setup beside adding paper and plugging in two cords (one to the wall, and one to the computer.)

Canon mf633cdw has never failed me. Big, pretty expensive for the unit and toners cost a ton BUT that last thing was solved by simply buying toner powder for 10$ and refilling the cartridges plus swapping a chip that's merely squeezed in place between plastic pieces to tell the machine toners are now 100% full again. It just werks, never dries. Even does photos half-decently for throwaway things like birthday cards. Just promise me you'll never buy consumer grade HP stuff.
