I still dont understand why MIDI was ditched so bad after year 1999The progress in MIDI connecter physical sequence devices stopped, they were no longer made. There was never an attempt to make them a bit cheaper and sell them in numbers of millions. There was never an attempt to turn music world itself largely towards MIDI machines. And they did not try to evolve MIDI into something that has more variety than the original 80s version. We all know the original incarnation of MIDI is not suitable for all kinds of real music humans are able to make with real instruments.>limitations in tempo changes etc.>which make it hard to reach some styles of guitar music>MIDI is still 100% piano compatibleAll its shortcoming ewould have been fixed in 2010 latest due to progress in computer procesing power. But nobody tried.

MIDI is still huge, despite it being a fairly garbage standard. It's funny we now have shit like MIDI 2.0, which is basically just overloading the channels so you can just about have 8 bit expression for multiple voices.Ideally USB would've superseded it by now, but musicians are very slow to adopt new standards, and music equipment manufacturers are very happy to sell outdated slop. Most modern synths are literally just a rPi in a box or a couple of DSPs stuck together, constrained to 8 bits in terms of input because "fuck you MIDI is slow".
>>109861884there are plenty of midi keyboards, new models are released every year probablywhat does midi keyboards have to do with the bigger issues though?there is nothing else but keyboards.and these keyboards are mostly used to input midi notes to midi software running on a computer
>>109860510MIDI did and still does what it is supposed to so, transfer digital data in real time between devices. That said, we recently got this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI_2.0>The MIDI 2.0 standard was unveiled on January 17, 2020Companies also still make all sorts of MIDI hardware. The only thing that is basically gone is general midi

>>109860510Waveform audio becoming economically viable made the need for MIDI obsolete.>vidya musicIn the 90's you already had a turnover. Games like Heroes of Might & Magic II had both MIDI and wave music, the latter needing the game CD to stream. As time went on, the music got installed with the game on the drive. MIDI was more of a half-measure when waveform audio was too expensive for the average home consumer. Even then it wasn't really the go-to way to do things for a good while, only in the 90's you started seeing cheap sound cards with cheap MIDI chips as well was wavesynth capabilities, but the latter were too limited to supersede MIDI completely. Before that most had to be satisfied with PC speaker beeps, and barely anyone ran SC-55's to play their DOOM.>music makingDAW's adapted the MIDI concept to be more flexible. You're no longer limited to soundfonts, you can use synthesizers and samples directly while maintaining the MIDI way of composing. You can still buy MIDI controllers, just because that's the go-to way for DAW's to take in input.PCM audio superseded MIDI audio. Of course, if you're a nerd you'll still care about MIDI, but the world moved on. Nowadays you can fully emulate the SC-55 if you care about MIDI so strongly still, but otherwise, there's no real use case for MIDI audio anymore. It lives on as an input format for DAW's though.
Anyone has any MIDI sound modules still?
>>109862060Note that none of these are MIDI devices in the sense the SC-55 was a MIDI device. Everything MIDI that you see today only uses MIDI as an input API and nothing more. I have a M-Audio Keystation, and that's the only type of "true MIDI device" that you can get today. A controller. It works flawlessly with Nuked SC-55 though, since MIDI is just an API. Nobody uses MIDI modules anymore really, synths aren't the same thing.
>>109862467midi music in games was mostly only a thing for games released on floppy, and even then it was never the only option.on pc's you also had adlib music (FM synthesis) and tracker (wavetable synthesis) musichttps://youtu.be/hpSQfVT438Uhttps://youtu.be/FjHon6yg-r8
>>109862510>trackersTrackers were objectively superior to MIDI. They gave you the same control over musical notes, but gave you the flexibility of using your own samples, giving more creative freedom to the composers. Look no further than the Commodore Amiga and what it was capable of.Like I said, MIDI music in PC games was an oddball, before that you had no real audio on x86 PC's, and after that you had the SoundBlaster 16 making pure PCM a commodity.
>>109860510there is new midi controllers with expressiveness stuff they are just expensive>>109860574anyone who makes music seriously has a midi controller and routes it to physical stuff like analog synths they just use a PC as the centralized midi controller it's just better for that.
>>109862531yep, midi, at least general midi and not something more specific like MT32 midi was a lowest common denominator option. you could get some kind of output regardless of what kind of hardware you had; a real SC55, your cheap shit wavetable card that didn't really conform to any recognised standard, or the built-in windows "poor man's sc55" software emulated midi synthesis which nowadays every non-professional associates with midi since that's how most people past 1995 heard midi unless they went out of their way to get something better (which nobody did).tracker music on the other ships their samples so they sound exactly as intended no matter what hardware you have, and of course have custom samples so they don't all sound the same
>>109862531>>109862562on that note; midi can sound pretty good IF you had the same midi synth as the artist who made the music, but that's a big if for 99.9% of people. and it's still not as good as tracker music since you're still limited to a fixed set of instrumentshttps://youtu.be/Pdd2CNlcqn0https://youtu.be/Eidx_QoYovg
>>109862531actually getting good sounding stuff is in large part due to how the sounds are mixed and combined not just the sound sources. the mt32 sounds much better because that is handled well.Having some kind of standard mt32-esque thing that exposes a reverb bus you can also send game sounds to and change depending on the game world would sound way better then most of what people use even nowadays Nowadays every game sounds like complete shit (even big ones) the music doesn't fit the world at all the voices don't fit in the world at all it's clearly just like a track that was mixed and mastered "to be music" with other stuff haphazardly layered on top. Sound design is super important and just having something people can have integrated w/ sound effects reverb for different spaces and everything with music/instruments that are pre mixed to sound good (mt-32 was great for that) would lead to way better sound design>>109862629you can hear in these two how much worse the sc-55 sounds. what instruments you use is really not that important in music, its' how you blend them. the mt-32 blended them intentionally and well (every sound type was pre-panned and eq to fit into a certain harmonic space so they worked well together)That's only possible with a fixed set on instruments.normies who don't make music cannot hear this or identify it at all but it's the biggest differentiator in terms of how the music actually comes off.

>>109861937Yea, it's funny how many don't realize that's the truth behind their expensive Roland synths. Even the older ones, with their trademark sound at this point, are perfectly recreated by software synths since they all use the same, basic method to produce sound. If you're working electronic, chances are it's been already re-created, more or less. Even some older compressors have been recreated for the characteristics they imprint upon the routed input.

>>109862773this is beside the point of my posts, but your posts are interesting to me nonetheless.i'm not really that interested in music, the most i know about the mt-32 and sc-55 is that the sc-55 is newer and i think it uses sampled instruments vs. the '32s synthesised intruments. i could be wrong, i haven't even looked up the technical differences between them in a long time.hey; if you can make better music with the mt-32, i am not going to say otherwise. i've already mentioned i'm not trying to compare them.got any other examples of nice mt-32 music besides monkey island? it's a bit before my time

Even Roland's attempts at recreating their own devices in software are imperfect. The SC-55 is the only one with a flawless (or so near that it can pass as such) software recreation. Everything else falls short.
>>109862813you are only talking about digital pianosyou are cluelessmidi should be about turning a digital note into a sound, not only about inputting digital notesevery device you suggest, do nothing but create notes, you can do that with a comptuer keyboard and mouse as well if you dont care about doing it as a realtime music
>>109862810the sc-55 is better if you are a musician recording and producing music using it as an instrument you then later are mixing and mastering on your own. The mt-32 is a better implementation related to midi because it basically takes the midi input and then puts it into the system which has pre-mixed sounds that are made to work well together. It's not a matter of "if i can make better music with it" it's just the mt-32 is actually meant for this, and the sc-55 is not. It's just not understanding the actual purpose of the device. The output of the mt-32 is supposed to be final music, the output of the sc-55 is sounds which you can then mix into final music, the sc-55 is more of just a traditional instrument while the mt-32 is an attempt at actually getting a good final sound out of midi. I could make better music with the sc-55 but that would involve actually having my own mixing and mastering stuff it is piped through. The MT-32 was great because that is just built in so you can throw any midi at it and it still sounds good. You can intentionally compose music "for the sc-55" and it will still sound bad because recording music is not just triggering sounds but combining them.Things like having a shared reverb bus with sound effects and music is what modern games do and is what creates the sense of "space" when you move into a cave and the music sounds different and sfx sound different. It is actually designed for good game sound, that's not possible with the sc-55 because it's designed to be an instrument, not for game sound.

One thing I really like about tracker modules that AFAIK MIDI can't do is that they can be looped to mid-track. A memorable example is HOODLUM's cracktro from their 2005's GTA:SA release. If you run the OG cracktro or you run it's module via XMPlay and loop it, once it reaches the end it jumps back to the middle of the track where it creates a seamless loop. That was really cool.

>>109863074Things got worse back in the day, and only got better thanks to the community, if that makes sense. When the Hot Coffee thing happened, R* updated the game and changed up a lot about it. Namely the executable. Then in 2014, music licenses expired so radio stations on digital re-releases like the ones on Steam got cut, so now you need to do a proper file downgrade for the right experience. Then when the Defective Edition happened, those OG's got de-listed from Steam so the only way to get them (assuming you haven't gotten them on Steam) is through RGL, and you still have to downgrade it.The reason why this v1.0 US HOODLUM executable is so important is ASI mods that fix just about everything about the game that was never addressed by R*. ASI apparently stands for "Audio Stream Interface" and the file format originated from Miles Sound System used in GTA III and Vice City. Modders quickly realized that those were renamed DLL files that would get injected into the game's process and that's how ASI modding came to be, people wrote DLL modules that would manipulate the game in process. Thing is, if this executable changes, it's memory addresses get scrambled, so any ASI mod written for the game will fail to work, which is why the de facto standard in GTA:SA modding is that HOODLUM EXE. It's DRM-free and it's based on the release version, so everyone targeted that, and any downgrader you run nowadays will binary patch it via XDelta to become a v1.0 US HOODUL EXE.

>>109863145The naming I found from some obscure GitHub repo where the guy said he sent an e-mail over to the creator of MSS and that's how he got the answer. It's a cool tidbit of trivia, but the more important part is how the whole "ASI mod" thing came to be and what it is. MSS loaded DLL's named as ASI into the game, people leveraged that to inject code into the games, once MSS was gone in SA, SilentPL AKA CookiePLMonster AKA Arian wrote a standalone ASI loader for GTA:SA that hooked itself under vorbisFile.dll, and that eventually became it's own generic modding method, so now you have ASI mods for Sims 3, Saints Row 2 and many others. And it all started with GTA III and MSS.The important part is this: ASI mods are no different from malware injecting malicious code into processes from which they could pull sensitive data. That's why they can get flagged as a virus, as the antivirus can't tell if it's actually malware or just a vidya fix. And it's why they can do such heavy lifting like how Juiced Patch un-fucked the PC port of Saints Row 2. You're basically writing your own code that hijacks the code of the game. It's fairly low level and hard to pull off but it works and it can do a lot when done by someone competent.
>>109863180> the guy said he sent an e-mail over to the creator of MSS and that's how he got the answer. that's actually really cool. RAD game tools goes way back in terms of video game middleware. never a well-known group/company but most people have played a game that has assets produced by their tools. (bink, smacker, miles etc)

no clue OP but I love games that use MIDI because I can change the soundfont and customize my experience this way
>>109860510While I think MIDI is cool, it has always seemed to me that MIDI was only ever used because simply playing & storing recorded music at high quality was beyond the capabilities of earlier home computers. MIDI was just easier to handle for earlier computers since it's much more efficient to basically store a sequence of instrument notes than to store high quality recordings of actual instruments, especially before the PC CD-ROM era.Once PCs did advance enough and CD-ROM drives became common, I guess there wasn't much reason for MIDI anymore since it was possible to simply play a recording of music rather than needing hardware to generate it on the fly.
>>109860510There was never much demand to update it. Too much effort for too little gain.Standalone hardware synths are no longer integral to making digital music, and more features aren't needed if you're just using it as a simple input device for further processing.Software solutions and DAWs haven't needed much expansion beyond what a simple hacks can do, and without the limits imposed by 80s hardware, are flexible enough to disagree on where the standard should go, making consolidation more difficult.Sequenced playback strictly for end user listening is very niche now, lacking the demand to drive a new standard either.
>>109864578MIDI was only ever a stopgap. What I always find funny is that in Japan the CD-ROM era started in 1989, it's just that the west didn't have the bubble era that created monsters like the PC Engine, so CD audio wasn't a thing for much longer, and most of the early CD-ROM stuff on PC was just general MIDI.
>>109862920That thing sounds incredible

used a kawai midi tone gen for awhile. then was given this to play with. then used the sony acid pro to do loops and midi for song. now just use suno.
>>109860510MIDI is still around, tons of stuff. And you can buy newly made keyboards, sound modules, sequencers, effects boxes, mixers, recorders that all accept MIDI control.MIDI went away for PC because sample playback based sound fonts had gotten good enough to equal the sound you'd get from the entry level GM modules people were using for game music. That's unfortunate but it allowed for more creative control than a GM/GS/XG unit can offer.>>109860574>there is no hardwareYou're completely ignorant. Heck even the latest most modern Yamaha, Korg, and Roland flagship keyboard workstations support General MIDI to this day (GS and XG too).
>>109865447volcas are based, the fm on and the modular in particular but the sample is great toonow everybody's making little mini instruments
>>109860574Software is not yet powerful enough to simulate analog and reproduce the true signal to noise ratio with depth and headroom. It's basically physics, and analog is still very much used today.
>nu-/g/ thinks OPs picture is a "synthesizer"
>>109860532excuse my ignorance.I have a Roland Rubix22 and I noticed it has a MIDI in and out ports on its back, does that mean it works the same as OPs pic? or what is the difference?
>>109862862>midi should be about turning a digital note into a sound, not only about inputting digital notesLiterally out of scope for MIDI. Do you even know what the technology is about?
>>109867850No, it's for connecting MIDI stuff to your PC like the device in OPs picture.
>>109867556VA does a great job, computer or DSP-based in a box, whatever you've got. That said I have a small home studio and it's zero computer, just keyboard, sound modules, MPC, etc.
>>109867850>>109867864But kinda, with software like Nuked SC-55 you can "emulate" a SC-55 using those ports on your PC too, if you for example connect a MIDI keyboard to those ports or a old computer (to basically make your PC into an SC-55 for the old PC).
>>109867872Back in the day I had a rompler MIDI keyboard and while it had some good instruments, I would also make my own and load them into the wavetable on my Sound Blaster Live! card so I could sample things. I still have it, Alesis QS6.1. I use it as my master control keyboard now.
>>109867914>wavetable on my Sound Blaster Live!Live! has hardware wavetable? Sure you don't mean something like AWE32/64?Live! should just have used normal soundfonts in software if needed.
>>109867951Live! was fast enough to DMA the sampes straight out of RAM, no wavetable needed. Old ISA cards were not. So it didn't need its own RAM on the card.
Live! had its own software and wavetable manager, you could load soundfonts but it had more synthesis options than soundfonts.
>>109868006Yeah true soundfonts aren't synthesis
>>109862862>which there is none>gets shit onvery cool>>109867998>So it didn't need its own RAM on the card.ram on cards = for faggots
>>109868109I have an older sound card than that. The oldest known PC sound card in fact. Very rare. Nobody has even heard of it. Sadly zero games use it lol.

I miss the comfy pure melodies produced by sine waves in old videogames
>>109868357>>109868367I should jam some resistors together.
>>109868569And then bang some bits!
>>109860574Literally all modern electronic music hardware and isn't a toy will have midi in/out. Its ubiquitous. If anything the travesty is that a better protocol hasn't been properly adopted yet.
>>109868708MIDI 2.0 is out but it only matters for certain stuff that most people don't care about. MIDI is good enough for everything people do, in practice. It's simple enough for musicians to understand, it's robust. There's literally nothing wrong with it.Only problem these days is gear that has those little headphone connector to midi port adapters, or even worse, USB MIDI only.
You can simulate MPE with MIDI 1.0 for instance. There are several ways to do it. The easiest is to simply send a note per channel down the cable with the same patch on each channel. Also Mode 8 may do it if your synth will, more or less.
Reading this thread is painful, most of you video game nerds don't know what MIDI is or what it was invented for. This is like if websites stopped using html and people were complaining that no-one uses http anymore.

>>109868731It's a file format.
>>109868749It wasn't a file format until the general midi spec was bolted onto the protocol about a decade into its existence. Its a communications protocol.

>>109868719>There's literally nothing wrong with it.It's literal garbage for actual expression. >>109868727Even with 16 channels, even using USB-MIDI, you're really limited by the 1.0 spec.
>>109869136>It's literal garbage for actual expression.Bullshit. Only real limitation is velocity and aftertouch are per-channel. But that's fine and has been for many decades.>Even with 16 channels, even using USB-MIDI, you're really limited by the 1.0 spec.Nobody wants your nu-garbage and Midi 2.0 is only useful for a very few controllers and synths. Nobody will abandon Midi 1.0, it's just not happening. I remember when all the fags were lactating over OSC. But it flopped, nothing supports it but for a few toys and Max/PD.
>>109869163I'm not saying anyone will abandon MIDI 1.0, and the reason is simple. It's cheaper to implement, you can use crappier parts if you're still using 8 bit and just smooth out all the zipping in software, and the vast majority of MIDI controllers are not designed around expression. >>109869163>Only real limitation is velocity and aftertouch are per-channel.And they're limited to 8 bit. "B-But X uses MSB and LSB for 14 bit!" I hear you smugly cry, ignoring the associated latency and how hard the protocol gets thrashed if you're trying to send pressure over 8+ channels at once, which is why nobody uses them. The only truly expressive electronic instruments do everything on-board and skip MIDI entirely, which is why CVC is still a thing.
>>109869217>all the zippingIt's not exactly a huge problem with many things. I only ever had a zipper problem with my old Alesis QS 6.1's filter, which was digital and didn't smoothly transition between points. Ironically I can use the same slider on that keyboard to adjust the filter on my EX5, for instance, and there's no zipper noise. Likely it ramps between positions a bit gradually, which is something that would have been put into MIDI instruments as a more natural way to deal with the issue than "let's throw away MIDI guys.">The only truly expressive electronic instruments do everything on-board and skip MIDI entirely, which is why CVC is still a thing.Kek you fell for the modular meme. Don't get me wrong, I have a 2600 clone, which I use with MIDI actually, but my Volca Modular has CV only and it's fine I guess. My nu-MPC has CV built in.But it doesn't somehow burst you beyond MIDI into some magical new realm of pure, unfiltered expression. It's much more of a pain in the mass and I would argue that unless you're bundling a thick thick bunch of cables the size of your leg around, it's not more expressive than MIDI.Of course you can swamp MIDI. But as for me I just have an 8x8 MIDI interface hooked to my MPC so every MIDI device has 16 channels all to itself. This also neatly cures the common issue of daisy-chaining and timing being out of whack.I love MIDI. It's great for what it is. At this point it's like the Edison socket for lights, sure there are attempts to replace it but nothing will stick.
>>109869242>Kek you fell for the modular meme.I don't own any modular gear because it's a scam. But CVC is a LOT better than 8 bit, and it's the only real choice if you want to build something good, aside from on-board processing, because of how shit MIDI is, and how poorly its set up in most software synths to hide its limitations. MIDI is fine for its intended purpose, which is poorly imitating piano. Where it falls apart is when you want to move beyond that into true electronic instruments, which barely exist because of how crippling MIDI is.
>>109869276kek it's no use, you sound brain damagedMIDI has been great for decades, and very very few people care about the attempts to supplant it even by the MIDI people themselves. I don't think I've heard of very many musicians complaining about how it's crippling their creativity. Seems mostly to be a complaint from lazy DAW-makers and such who went with their own special sauce for their internal implementation of everything and don't want to properly support MIDI. I can't think of many other people who would be so put out by poor old MIDI just faithfully doing a great job.If you get creative you can get around many of the limitations of MIDI. Mode 8, getting creative with splitting performances per-note and using a voice per channel, etc. But channel controllers seem to be just fine as they are today. Whoever is upset clearly doesn't impact sales or have their own market so they will be ignored.
