Dumbass question: sell me on the difference between 4080 vs 5080 gpus. I've heard that 50 just sucks up more power for no real benefit, but I'm too behind the times to know.

Thanks. I don't care about overclocking, but it seems like the 50s cover a bunch of rush issues in the 40s. Is catching fire still a problem?

My decision seems to have been made for me, 40 series cards are almost impossible to find and practically the same price as 50s anyway.

>Is catching fire still a problem?
yeah it is, but it mostly affects 5090s since those draw double the power at 600w.
there are also better mitigation available now than we used to have. the most set it and forget it solution would be asus' rog equalizer while if you want an active prevention, the thermalgrizzly wireview pro ii would help you measure any overcurrents and can auto shutdown your system if it goes over the threshold for a set amount of time

I had to settle for a 9700X because 9800X3D was unobtanium and I didn't want to buy last gen. Also 32GB of RAM instead of 64GB, thought I'll just buy more later... uh oh.
Also a 4080S, but should have gotten a 5090 at launch in early 2005 instead, didn't know the prices would fuck up so bad.

That's what I get for cheaping out, now I'm probably stuck with this for several years.
>>
>>109861266
>yeah it is, but it mostly affects 5090s since those draw double the power at 600w.
Noted, I'm not aiming that high so hopefully it won't be an issue.
One last question I've never fully figured out, if anyone feels like it:
5070 Ti and 5080 both have 16g VRAM - what's the practical difference?
>>
>>109861328
5070ti is a downbinned 5080 with fewer cuda cores, only 8960 cores and 48mb L2$ compared to the 5080's 10752 cores and 64mb L2$. It also ships with downbinned gddr7 operating at 28Gbps.
In most games, the 5080 is only 13% ahead, but in heavily raytraced/pathtraced games the 5080 can be as much as 20% faster.
Actually the 5080 was initially planned to have 24GB of gddr7 at 32Gbps but nvidia downgraded it right before launch without dropping the price (still $1k msrp) which is why it costs so much more despite the relatively small difference in performance
>>
>>109861314
>cpu
Wait for zen 6 next year (or if you are super paranoid just try and get a 9800x3d right now).
>gpu
Buy now or forever regret it. Waitfags ALWAYS lose (ignore my cpu idea).
>>
>>109861314
i know that feels but i did the opposite of you
i sold my spare kit of 96gb 6400cl32 ram for $350 and my spare 5090 aorus master for $2600 last year lol
>>
>>109861338
They cucked the vram? I am so fucking mad fuck this gay earth. 24gb 5080 would have been the perfect gpu.
>>
>>109861347
they cucked it hard supposedly because 3gb gddr7 supply was terrible at the start, and was supposed to release the 24gb variant as the 5080S like late last year or during CES this year
then the AI cuckery happened
>>
>>109861346
You could have gotten 5x as much now...
>>
>>109861357
maybe 5x next year but easily 2.5x if I sold this year
whatever, i've cut my losses and will just cope with my current pc
>>
>>109861338

They dropped the RAM but just charged the same money anyway? The crash can't come fast enough.

Only the astral offers 12v-2x6 power monitoring which is crucial in preventing the connector from melting. Even so, you can now get the same feature from the thermalgrizzly wireview pro ii so that's a moot point.
The other models are same-ish with minor differences in cooling and stock OCs
