all name brand phones from the past 7 years cannot realistically be scratched by anything short of stainless steel so if you just don't put your phone and keys in the same pocket you should never need a screen protector.
I never put a screen protector on any of my phones from the first smartphone I got until this current pixel. I have no idea why I decided to add it this time but the one time I did I ended up dropping the phone and the screen protector took the brunt of the damage. Now I'm wondering, had I not put the screen protector on like I did my other phones, would I have even dropped it?

I did on my original iPhone. Came with the case I bought. Possibly protected me in an unexpected way once. I was running for the bus, lost my footing, hit the ground, and drove my thumb hard into the screen. Left a single long crack running the length. I'd like to think it would've sliced my thumb had the screen protector not been there.Haven't used one since, mostly because my cases since didn't include one.Sometimes I wonder about those glass ones, particularly for my iPad. Does the extra distance affect touch detection? Are they easy to remove?
