So to trick people into thinking they were actually optimizing things they started having search skip looking in some places and at some file types. The means you can never trust search in newer versions of windows. In windows 2000 search was 100% thorough.

I met Steve Ballmer once at a government IT conference when i was just starting out in the industry. This was about 2000 or 2001. I had no fucking idea who he was. Steve Jobs was the only face of Microsoft that I knew about. He asked me where I was from and I answered him honestly. He then said he knew someone there and made another anecdote and then said bye. A while later my boss asked me about the encounter. He had been watching my activities and behavior since I was the FNG. He told me he saw that I had spoken to one the honchos at Microsoft.

I will say though that at least during his time the products MS made weren't as toxic and actively user-hostile as the shit they've been releasing since, even the stinkers MS released in his time were "honest" stinkers, like they were bad on a technical reason or were badly designed and poorly thought out, they weren't actively malicious towards their own users.
