In theory nothing is supposed to break in the first place because we use explicit dependencies (slotted to specific so version) and Portage will block on them but in practice sometimes the dependencies aren't so explicit (e.g "/0" being used as a sort of "I don't care" dependency) and then you get to deal with the fallout.

I have had Gentoo on my workstation for ~5 years. It never really breaks, sometimes I have to spend a couple hours working around something (Python version upgrade). I find it easier to manage than other distros because Portage is good and the entire system is easily hackable.

Nowadays I just use NetBSD on everything that I have, otherwise I'd 100% use Gentoo, specially for out of the box gaming.
