It's as good as any other data harvesting keyboards, the only thing I miss from Swiftkey is the ability to change the capitalization after having started writing or completed the writing of a word.

Heliboard, Futo, and AnySoft are extremely capable + private, and there are a bevy of other choices you can find and try from F-Droid and IzzyDroid. >>109874945I got used to manual typing, at least if I make a typo it's one character and not a completely different word. I do like how easy it is to enter diacritics with it and how it's very much a PC keyboard, with all the keyboard shortcuts you'd use. I can live without autocomplete and other fancy schmancy things, Unexpected Keyboard is the closest thing to my computer's keyboard and that's why I love it.

I love that keyboard because it has symbols and control characters useful in terminal emulators and such, and I can type accents to text my foreign family without switching languages. An underrated feature IMO is the drag-space-to-seek-caret, and the delete/backspace being swipes on the same key. Not sure if other keyboards have that, but because I manual type with no autocorrect I can just slide back to roughly where I need to edit and fix it. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V also work for clipboard. I only wish I could move the start and end boundaries of text selections using a similar mechanism.Also fun little anecdote about the keyboard. I was in Japan for a few weeks and had to sign for a Yamato package, but I didn't have a Japanese phone number. So I asked the receptionist lady if I could use the reception number which was clearly just a regular cell phone she was using, and surprisingly she was OK with it. I handed my phone to complete the form, she was a bit confused at the keyboard but then I showed how to type numbers in. She said "Ohhh, wakatta!" took my phone and emphatically swiped to type all the numbers in.

Every FOSS keyboard is shit if you rely on swipe typing and text prediction.Once you go back to doing things the old-school way, you're much less tethered to Gboard and can easily find an alternative. Mine being Unexpected Keyboard, as already mentioned. TT9 Keyboard is fun but for T9 I need the physical buttons, otherwise it doesn't make sense. Same with all the J2ME emulators, I need a physical T9 keyboard, a touchscreen feels unnatural for me, it's not what I'm used to.
