This shit kept happening to me for MONTHS. And it doesn't show up in Recycling Bin.
I finally figured it out. Downloading a file on a private browser of firefox and then closing the browser fucking deleted every single one of the files you downloaded. I knew I wasn't crazy. It's good for security I guess, but man I was losing my fucking mind trying to figure out where my files are going.

Most malware in Windows are super simple and most of them don't actually use fancy exploits, they resort to social engineering (like phishing), and if the user runs it like admin then it's game over.

But then again, the culprit is the user's bad practices most of the time. It's unusual to run across a virus that does actually exploit some obscure zero day, even if you see every patch tuesday that they patches hundreds of vulnerabilities.

Windows has decent security, but users have really shitty practices. Visiting shady porn websites, pirating games, cracking software, opening random links, clicking yes to anything, all the stuff that you rarely see Linux users do. I'd say one of the main areas where Windows is definitely guilty about is still not doing something about the clusterfuck EXE installers still are, they have Winget, but it's still not a mandatory feature and it doesn't really replace EXEs

It'd also be such a waste of effort to go to this extent just to infect some average joe and on the other hand targeting a high value profile would likely make it easier for authorities to track you back. Windows refugees on CachyOS have demonstrated this stupidity with the whole AUR farce. So it's not the OS that's the biggest problem, it's always the fucking USERS. One of the reasons Vista was shat on was always asking for admin permissions which in hindsight was meant to make people think twice about their bullshit.

if you mean unreadable by humans, I'm sure you can do the thing where you base64 encode the script to a string and pipe it to a decoder like you can in linux
if you mean completely unreadable, you'd have to encrypt them in such a way that only the computer meant to run the script can decrypt it

My hard drive was at 43% fragmented and Windows' weekly scheduled defrag job wasn't doing shit
ChatGPT told me to free up some space so I did and then Windows went and spent like four straight days doing seven defragging and consolidation passes and starting an eighth before I lost patience and stopped it
Scanned the drive again and after all that it was still at 36% fragmented

Yeah it's normal. If you want deeper defragging you gotta use some kind of third party one, though third part defraggers aren't the greatest; Defraggler was popular back in the day but it hasn't been updated for like 8 years and another called Auslogics Disk Defrag does the job but it's freemium nagware shit.

i used to use mydefrag (i don't use windows anymore) and it always did an excellent job. i don't think it's updated anymore either but it hardly matters. there's no risk associated with third party defraggers like you might assume because none of them actually do the filesystem work directly themselves, they call windows api's to perform the actual filesystem work, so they're perfectly safe to use even if they're out of date

oh also, it's true that freeing some space will help as it can make it easier to find contiguous space especially for larger files. keeping a good amount of free space in general also helps avoid fragmentation in the first place.

windows will also not let you defrag files that are open (system files, page file, etc), so it may not be possible to get fragmentation down to 0% if you're defragging your system volume (i.e. C:) except when doing so from another installation of windows (i.e. from a livecd such as hiren's bootcd)

I am currently running a computer with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC. It has an ASUS Crosshair X870E Glacial motherboard, an AMD 9950X3D2 Dual edition CPU, 64GB G.Skill Trident Neo DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM, a Crucial T710 Gen. 5 NVMe drive, and a Zotac RTX 5080. Up until recently, it was working fine, and it's only a few months old on this build. However, I must have touched something or broke something because now it has an issue where all Explorer related functions "lock up," after certain triggers. The triggers mainly seem to be if I wake it up from sleep, or just after turning on the PC. Well that's not what actually triggers it, but that seems to be the "setup" for triggering it. The actual trigger is basically any kind of mildly heavy computer usage during those periods. Browsing Twitter, clicking on Canvas Affinity, trying to download something. What it does is cause everything to lock up, in the sense that I cannot get to the Task Manager, I cannot open the start menu, I cannot start any new programs, and I cannot get to the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu. The only things I can do are continuing to use the programs I already have open or close those programs. Only a hard reset by forcing a shutdown will get me out of this lockup. It also blue-screened once, but that was just once. Resetting the graphics driver via shortcut does nothing, though I haven't been into safe mode to DDU and reinstall the graphics driver, I also don't think that's what's causing it. The only way I am able to use my computer at all is if I turn it on, and then don't touch it for about 10-15 minutes. Then when I log in, I make sure to close all programs and let the computer "warm up" for a bit. After that, I can use the computer normally, I believe. This makes me worried that it is a hardware issue, but since the problem is so bad I'm considering just reinstalling my whole OS, wiping the whole partition, and maybe even going to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC.

I have a problem with a Windows 11 installation on a laptop.

Diskpart list partition shows the following

>Partition 2 - Reserved
>Partition 3 - Primary
>Partition 4 - Recovery
>Partition 5 - Primary

Partition 3 is C:\ for Windows
Partition 5 is D:\ for second volume for user data

I want to enlarge the C:\ partition and shrink D:\, but this Recovery partition sits between them. I don't know what to do.

I can delete D:\, if that helps. The data is backed up, but I don't know how to enlarge C:\ since Windows put the recovery right at the end of that one.
